QUIZ # 4

NAME: ______________________________________________ SCORE: _____________

Problems:
1. An ammonia compressor is driven by a 20 KW motor. The compressor and the motor RPM are
460 and 1850, respectively. The small sheave has a pitch diameter of 154 mm. If the belt to be used
is standard B-173, determine the following:
A. Diameter of larger sheave
B. Center distance between sheaves.
C. The force on tight side
D. The force on slack side

2. An open belt drive connects a 400 mm driving pulley to another driven pulley 950 mm in diameter.
The belt is 250 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The coefficient of friction of the belt drive is 0.25 and the
density of the belt is 960 kg/m3. Other data are:
- center distance between shaft = 4.5 meters
- maximum allowable tensile stress on the belt = 1,500 Kpa
- speed of driving pulley = 900 rpm
Determine the following:
A. Centrifugal force
B. Tangential force on the pulley
C. Maximum pressure
D. Power that can be transmitted in KW.

3. A pulley have an effective belt pull of 3 KN and an angle of belt contact of 160 degrees. The
working stress of belt is 2 MPa. Determine the following:
A. The force on slack side
B. The force on tight side
C. Thickness of belt to be used if width is 350 mm and coefficient of friction is 0.32.
D. Maximum pressure

4. A pulley 600 mm in diameter transmits 40 KW at 650 rpm. The arc of contact between the belt and
pulley is 157 degrees, the coefficient of friction between the belt and pulley is 0.35, and the safe
working stress of the belt is 2.1 Mpa. Find:
A. The tangential force at the rim of the pulley.
B. The force on slack side
C. The force on tight side
D. The width of the belt used if its thickness is 8 mm.

5. An 10 in diameter pulley turning at 660 rpm is belt connected to a 20 inches diameter pulley. If
there is a 5% slip, find the speed of 20 in pulley.

6. An electric motor running at 1000 rpm drives a punch press shaft at 250 rpm by means of a 120
mm wide and 6 mm thick belt. When the clutch is engaged the belt slips. To correct this condition, an
idler pulley was installed to increase the angle of contact but the same belt and pulley were used.
The original contact angle on the 200 mm motor pulley is 162 degrees. The original contact ratio is
2.24 and the net tension is 15N/mm of the belt width. If an increase in transmission capacity of 15%
will prevent slippage, determine the following:
A. The coefficient of friction
B. The new slack side force
C. The new angle of contact.
