Indian place value system

The largest 4-digit number is 9,999

The smallest five-digit number is 10,000
The smallest five-digit number = The largest four-digit number + 1
Hence, 10,000 is the successor of 9,999 and 9,999 is the predecessor of 10,000.

How to read a number?

eg. 17,32,256: Seventeen lakh, thirty-two thousand two hundred fifty six.

In Indian system of Numeration, we read the number using the periods such as
ones, thousands, lakhs etc.

How to mark periods while writing a number.

While writing numbers, periods like ones, thousands and lakhs are separated by
commas (,) starting from the right to differentiate the periods. The first period i.e.
ones period consists of 3 places, ones, tens, hundreds (the first 3 digits from the
right of the numeral). The thousands period consists of next two digits i.e. one
thousands and ten thousands place and the third period (lakhs period) includes
one lakhs place and ten lakhs place.
Face value: The value of the digit in the number irrespective of its place.
Place value: The product of the value of the digit and its place
In 42,56,780 The face value of 5 is 5 itself, but the place value of 5
is 5 x 10,000 =50,000(Fifty thousand)
(The place value of zero is always zero)
