Factors Affecting Folk Dances


(Expanded Explanation of Lecture and Additional Examples)

1. Geographical location – Geographical location is one factor affecting folk dance as it


identify diversity of people in place and particular area. Especially
here in the Philippines wherein geographical location are bounded
by islands with diverse lifestyle of people based of their location.
For example, folk dances from the highlands or far from urban are
usually intricate, dainty, unique steps and movements are from
mimicking their lifestyle. Unlike from the low lands or urban
areas, dances here are mostly influenced by other culture and can
be dance by everyone because dances can be seen on the
mainstream.

2. Economic conditions – Economic conditions identify the economic status and growth of a
country in which it affects folk dances. As the country’s economic
status is high, tourism is prevalent in which people from other
countries tend to visit one country that brings cultural influences
and perceived by locals to their dances. On the other hand, if the
economic status is down, it interferes the development of folk
dances especially today which is pandemic, performance of folk
dances are impossible to perform.

3. Climatic conditions – Climatic conditions also interferes the performance of folk dances. If
performers perform on a bad weather, it affects their performance
as they struggle on their comfort ability and ease. Likewise
audience will not watch due to hindrances of their comfort.
4. Customs and traditions – Customs and traditions are believed folk dances are rooted. As it
is the basic reasons of why folk dances are existing. Folk dances
are different depends on different lifestyle of people varies also on
their geographical area.
