grafting
Introduction
What is grafting?

- Using two or more plants from the same family to

create one plant.

Why do we use grafting?

- The plant will be more resistant to diseases and

pests, will give better fruit (or any other product),
survive in hard condition and more.
- fast breeding of trees and plants.
Introduction
There are two different parts to a grafted plant:
1. Stock / rootstock.
2. Scion / cion.

How is grafting happens?
- The idea behind grafting is to take plants from the
same family identical vascular system.

- In all types of grafting we want the vascular system of

each plant to touch one another. Without this
happening, the plans will not healed together, and
water cannot flow from part to part.
How do we do it? And why?
Whip grafting – usually to get more than one kind
of fruit from the same tree.
How do we do it? And why?
Approach grafting – when we want to get specific
rootstock and specific scion.
How do we do it? And why?
Budding grafting – usually to get more then one kind
of fruit on each plant
How do we do it? And why?
Cleft grafting – usually on vegetables.
Tools
- There are special tools that using us in grafting:
special shears Adhesive tape pruning saw
weaknesses
- Diseases: by pruning we cause an injury to the plant.
This “weak spot” can be an entry spot for many
diseases, like viruses, bacteria and fungi.
- If we don’t perform the grafting perfectly, the two
plants will not connect well and the new plant will
dye. Therefore, grafting is being done only
professionals.
- this technic, statistically, doesn't always work.
Solutions
- Using chemical and paint against pathogens and
using polyethylene to wrap the plants, helps us avoid
diseases.
- Using specific tools for grafting - it’s important to
make sure that we cut the plants in the shape that
we need.
- Because grafting doesn't always succeed, we always
make more plants than we need, so we’ll be sure we
get enough plants.
How we chose rootstock?
- This decision is very critical, the rootstock the we
chose need to be suitable to the soil, if we have
disease in the soil or water problem.
- Another reason is genetic adjust between the scion
to the rootstock.
Example of grafting in agriculture
- Citrus: bitter orange is a very common rootstock that
is being used in citrus. These days there are many
other rootstocks available, and we can choose them
according to the scion that we want to grow, and
according to the soil.
Example of grafting in agriculture
- avocado: Lula is one example of a common rootstock
that used in Avocado, the rootstock changes from
variety to variety, and it depends also on the whether
and the type of the soil.
Example of grafting in agriculture
- tomato: Arnold is a type of rootstock that was
developed in Israel. the reason that we use grafting
for seasonal plant is usually to get good root system.
Take-home message
• Today, most of the trees that are used in extensive
agriculture are grafted. it’s important because it takes
time to breed trees, and this is a fast way to do it.
Additionally, using rootstocks can help us deal with soil
diseases and water problems.

• It takes time to learn how to do grafting properly. so it’s

better to make more plants than you need.
