Some Rules

Remember we always use ‘a’ or ‘an’ for jobs:


She’s a teacher.
He wants to be a firefighter.
Mr. Brown was an engineer before he retired.

Singular countable nouns: e.g. book/puppy/teacher


 Non-specific or mentioned for the first time (‘indefinite’): use 'a' or ‘an’

My daughter wants to buy a dog this weekend. (Indefinite - Could be any dog)

 Specific or already known (‘definite’): use ‘the’

My daughter wants to buy the dog we saw in the pet shop. (Definite - The


one in the pet shop)

He asked for a new jacket for his birthday.


She bought him the same jacket that his friend has.

She ordered a hamburger without onions.


Did you eat the hamburger she ordered?
Plural countable nouns: e.g. books/puppies/teachers
Use ‘the’ or nothing, never 'a' for plurals!

Children are always curious. (indefinite) = general comment


Come and play with the children. (definite) = specific

She loves flowers. (indefinite) = general comment


The flowers in her garden are beautiful. (definite) = specific

Uncountable nouns: e.g. traffic/money/bread


Use "the" or nothing, never ‘a’ for plurals

I’ll be late as there is traffic in Barnes. (general)


The traffic was really bad this morning. (specific)

Medicine always makes me feel better.


The medicine I took for my hayfever had unpleasant side effects.

Have you studied the history of South Africa?


History reminds us that events repeat themselves.

Using ‘the’ in other situations:

Names of Countries
Some countries are preceded by "the", usually if the name is plural, contains an
adjective, or includes "of".

the United States (the USA) the United Kingdom (the UK)
BUT: America / England / Turkey etc

But for cities and streets – no article


I live in Chiswick, on Elmwood Road.
Shall we meet on Oxford Street tonight?
Also for institutions – no article needed
 She’s at work today. But she prefers spending time at home.
 When I was at school we wore uniform.
 He hopes to go to university next year.
 I believe his father is in prison.

For rivers, oceans, seas, groups of mountains & islands


use "the"
the Amazon the Black Sea the Mediterranean
the Bahamas
the Himalayas the Pacific Ocean

But individual mountains have no article: Have you climbed Mount Everest?

Numbers
Cardinal numbers (1,2,3) – no article
