What is the Ryanodine Receptor (RyR)?

• RyRs play a critical role in muscle

contraction Cell

• The RyR is a membrane-bound

protein localized in the sarco- RyR RyR

endoplasmic reticulum of muscle and

nerve cells
calcium
ions
• The RyR channel regulates release of Calcium
Store

stored calcium into the intracellular

space

12/11/2014
How Does It Work?
RynaxypyrTM Activates Insect RyRs
• Binding of Rynaxypyr™ to Heart of larval M. sexta
the RyR causes the receptor
channel to open for
prolonged periods of time.

• Uncontrolled release of
calcium ions depletes the
internal calcium stores.
Subsequently the insect is
unable to produce muscle
contractions  Paralysis

Mode of Action Summary
• Novel mode of action
- Potent activator of insect ryanodine receptors (RyRs)
- Depletion of internal calcium stores leads to insect paralysis/death

• Selective for Insect Ryanodine Receptors

• Mode of action shared with flubendiamide

- Flubendiamide shares binding site
- Distinct structural classes

• Excellent offering for resistance management

- Novel target and chemical class 8

BIOLOGICAL ATTRIBUTES
• Rapid feeding cessation (7 minutes) TREATED
 General lethargy
 Regurgitation
 Muscle paralysis
 Severe growth stunting

• Relatively slow death (within 72

hours)
• Activity by ingestion. (Thorough
foliar coverage is important) UTC

• Rainfastness: 1.0 hour Helicoverpa zea larvae

• Ovi-larvicidal activity (potent

as they ingest the corion to eclode
from the egg
Mammalian Toxicology

• No adverse effects have been observed:

• No acute oral, dermal and inhalation toxicity
• No skin and eye irritation; no skin sensitization
• No mutagenicity
• No carcinogenicity
• No subacute and subchronic toxicity in rats, mice and dogs
• No reproductive and developmental toxicity
• No neurotoxicity
• No immunotoxicity
• No chronic toxicity

• Conclusion: No adverse effects were observed in any

DuPont Altacor 34.9WG for
Oil Palm Pest control

Bunch moths - Tirathaba

Leaf eater – Spodoptera
Bagworn – Psychidae
Nettle caterpillar - Limacodidae
DuPont Altacor 34.9WG for Tirathaba control

Benefits:
1. Effective control on
Tirathaba
2. Long Duration of Control
(upto 3-6 months)
3. Does not affect newly hatch
pollination weevil. Only
effective on Lepidoptera.

Possible impacts of Tirathaba

• Losses of crop up more than 50% due to:

• Small fruit bunces/malformed bunces
• Thin mesocarp, lower OER
• Non formation of kernel
• Abortion of bunches
• High Free Fatty Acid (FFA)

Other Pests
Bagworm (Psychidae)
• Bagworm is one of the most destructive pests in Malaysia’s
oil palm plantations. About 33-40% of crop loses can be
caused by bagworm infestations (Basri, 1993)
• 3 major species: Metisa plana, Mahasena
corbetti and Pteroma pendula
