2. INTRODUCTION

2.1. Purpose
The purpose of this document is to provide procedure in performing anode current output measurement. In
cathodic protection, the current flows from anode to structure via electrolyte and electron
flows from anode to structure via connection cable.

2.2. Field Application

The measurement of anode current output is applicable for both cathodic protection systems:
sacrificial anodes and impressed current.
Three methods for current output measurement are identified in this procedure:

 Use of an Ampere-meter (Ammeter)

 Use of Clamp-on Ammeter

 Use of existing shut

2.3. Responsibilities

2.3.1. Engineer
 Set up the program of current output measurement

 Review result of current output measurement

 Issue memo and necessary recommendation to concerned entities

2.3.2. Field Supervisor

 Execute the program defined by engineer

 Ensure the equipment is valid for operation

 Verify the current output measurement data for further evaluation

 Compile data current output measurement and reported

2.3.3. Field Technician

 Prepare the equipment

 Perform current output measurement

 Compile test reading and report the data

2.4. Definition
Term Definition

Current Flow of charges along a conducting path and is measured in amperes.

A device clamps around the metallic path (cable) through which the current
Clamp-on Ammeter is flowing and measures the magnetic field created by the current.

Shunt Resistor with known resistance (known ampere/millivolt rating).

3. PROCEDURE

3.1. Equipment

3.1.1. Digital Voltmeter (DVG)

Digital voltmeter with a resolution of 1 mV or better and an input impedance of 10 Mega ohms or
greater at a range of 2 Volts.

3.1.2. Current Interrupter (CI)

At least able to interrupt 1000 Watt TR power.

3.1.3. Data Probe(s)

Consist of field saturated copper/copper sulphate electrodes (CSE), attached on measuring poles of
walking sticks.

3.1.4. Test Cable

 Single core flexible 1.5 mm² minimum copper conductor insulated

 Terminated in banana plug to suit the DVM sockets at one end

 Battery/crocodile clip at the other end

3.2. Transformer Rectifier Interruption

Current interrupter is only installed at the nearest involved impressed current cathodic protection
transformer rectifier or temporary current source. Refer to Figure 1 for the complete arrangement of
current interrupter installation.
a. Set up current interrupter with typically interruption 300 milliseconds “ON” and 700
millisecond “OFF”.
b. Record operating condition of DC voltage and current output of transformer rectifier to be
interrupted.
c. Switch off DC and AC power source of the transformer rectifier.
d. Disconnect cable at negative terminal DC output of the transformer rectifier unit.
e. Connect cables with proper cable size (minimum 1/c x 16-mm² insulation cable) from current
interrupter with the following configuration:
 Negative terminal to the negative terminal of transformer rectifier,

 Positive terminal to the protected structure.

f. Switch ON AC and DC power of the transformer rectifier.
g. Check that the interrupter works properly by measuring the TR output potential (the potential
should be in the interruption cycle).
For SACP pipeline:
a. Disconnect the connections of sacrificial anodes-to-pipe which are located between the
concerned test points (for example Y and Z) and located beyond these two test points (at
least 2 sacrificial anodes-to-pipe connections).
b. Temporary transformer rectifier is to be installed at test point Y (with condition that test point
has 2 cables connection to pipe).
c. Connect cables with proper cable size (minimum 1/c x 16-mm² insulation cable) from current
interrupter with the following configuration:

 Negative terminal to the negative terminal of transformer rectifier,

 Positive terminal to the protected structure.

d. Switch ON AC and DC power of the transformer rectifier.
e. Set TR output gradually to achieve potential shift between ON and instant OFF potential at least
300 mV at test point Y and Z.
3.3. Transformer Rectifier Rading
Minimum information to be provided in the report are listed, but not limited to:

3.4. Reporting
1) Disconnect the pipe lead wires from negative terminal of the rectifier unit.
2) With the rectifier setting at the minimum (0%) turn ON the upstream main circuit breaker
and the breaker on the rectifier unit.
3) If the DC output voltage is 0 or excerssive turn the unit OFF and investigate.
4) Connect the pipe lead wires to one cable of current interrupter and connect other cable
of current interrupter to negative terminal of the rectifier units.
5) Turn On and gradually increase the output of the rectifier until the desired output level is
attained (pipe-to-soil potential measured is more negative than -850 mV w.r.t Cu/CuSO 4
reference electrode).
6) Connect portable DC ammeter and voltmeter to verify the accuracy of the rectifier panel
meters.
7) Measure the current at each cable in negative distribution box and positive distribution
box
8) At each current increment, turn-on the current interrupter for instant-off pipe to soil
potential measurement.
9) Adjustment the rectifier output as necessary after the potential survey is completed and
recheck key locations. Final output values and settings shall be recorded.
