III. MATERIALS AND PROCEDURES

MATERIALS
2 – Beakers (100mL) Iron Fillings (Fe)
2 – Watch glass anhydrous copper (II) sulfate (CuSO4) crystals
1 – Graduated cylinder Distilled water
1 – Stirring rod
1 – Hot plate
1 – Triple beam balance
PROCEDURES
PROPERTIES OF REACTANTS

1. Place 1.75g of Fe in a watch glass. Observe color, physical state, and luster.
2. Place 5.0g of anhydrous CuSO4 in a watch glass. Observe color, physical state, and luster.
3. Record your observation in table 1.1

REACTION OF IRON WITH COPPER (II) SULFATE

1. Transfer 5.0g of anhydrous CuSO 4 crystal into 100 mL beaker. Add 30 mL of water and
stir.
2. Place the beaker with mixture on a hot plate. Carefully heat the mixture and stir until
CuSO4 crystals dissolve completely. Do not allow the mixture to boil.
3. Remove the beaker from the hot plate. Add 1.75g of Fe filling, a little at a time to the hot
CuSO4 solution, and stir continuously. Allow the mixture to cool for 10 minutes.
4. Observe the changes that occur. Enumerate in Table 1.2 all the signs indicating that
chemical reaction occur.
5. Identify the products formed from the reaction of iron with copper (II) sulfate. Write a
complete balance chemical equation in Table 1.3
DETERMINATION OF ACTUAL YIELD, EXPECTED YIELD, AND PERCENT YIELD

1. Decant the liquid product by gently pouring the liquid down the stirring rod into another
beaker. Do not disturb copper left at the bottom of the beaker.
2. Add about 10 ml of water to the copper left in the beaker and stir. Filter the mixture.
3. Determine the mass of empty evaporating dish. Record the mass in Table 1.4
4. Transfer the copper left in the filter paper into evaporating dish.
5. Allow copper to dry inside preheated oven at about 50ºC.
6. Remove the evaporating dish from the oven and allow it to cool.
7. Measure the total mass of the evaporating dish and copper.
8. Determine the actual yield of copper. Record the results on Table 1.4
9. From stoichiometry calculation, determine the expected yield of copper. Calculate the
percent yield of copper. Write your calculations in Table 1.5

Observation/s

 The iron filling changed color. This signifies that chemical reaction happened. It turned
into a shiny orange colored substance.
