Academic Text

These are texts used in a school or classroom. It


includes school books, newspapers, articles,
textbooks and anything that has been written by
someone who has experience in the field.
READING GOALS
Before you read an academic text, ask yourself the following
questions.

1. Why am I reading this text?


2. What information or pieces of information do I need?
3. What do I want to learn?

BEFORE READING:
o Determine which type of academic text you are reading.
o Determine and establish your purpose for reading.
o Identify the author’s purpose for writing.
o Predict or infer the main idea or argument of the text based on its
title.
o Identify your attitude towards the author and the text.
o State what you already know and what you want to learn about the
topic.
o Determine the target audience.
o Check the publication date for relevance.
o Check the reference list.
o Use graphic organizer to note your existing ideas and knowledge on
the topic.

BEFORE READING: Process the text to be read.

o Write keywords or phrases on the margins in bullet forms.
o Write something on the page margin where important information is
found.
o Write brief notes on the margin.
o Write questions on information that you found confusing.
o Write what you already know about the ideas.
o Write the limitations of the authors argument.
o Write notes on the reliability of the text.
o Comment on the author’s biases.
o Use graphic organizers in noting down ideas being explained.
o Underline important, phrases, clauses, or sentences.
o Underline or circle meanings or definitions.
o Mark/ highlight relevant/ essential parts of the text.
o Use context clues to define unfamiliar/ technical words.
