Spray nozzle information
The ASABE S572 standard uses six droplet classification categories, six of which are common for
agriculture and horticulture:
Very Fine , Fine , Medium , Coarse , Very Coarse and Extremely Coarse .
Fine sprays provide enhanced retention for directed spraying on the target including:
• Foliar-acting weed control
• Contact-acting fungicides and insecticides
Coarse sprays are used with systemic, residual, and soil-applied herbicides.

Very fine 41.5 99.9 170.8
Fine 65.7 163.6 350.1
Medium 88.0 249.4 495.2
Coarse 95.6 365.1 683.5
Very coarse 109.2 408.3 842.6
Extremely coarse 109.2 >408.3 >842.6
Droplet size classification is based on BCPC specification and in accordance with ASAE S-572 at date of printing 10/04. Classifications are subject to change.
Measures made by MALVERN particle size 2600 and Oxford Visisizer.
Droplet sizes are expressed in microns. One micron equals .001 millimeters. Other than the effects of
the specific material being sprayed, the four major factors affecting droplet size are:
• Spray nozzle style — flat fan, floods, cones, discs, cores
• Capacity — low flow produces smaller droplets; high flow produces
larger droplets
• Pressure — low pressure produces larger droplets; high pressure produces smaller droplets
• Spray pattern type — eliptical (flat fan nozzle), band (banded/flood nozzle), conical (cone
nozzle)

Wear and Chemical Compatibility
CERAMIC (C) — Highly resistant to abrasive and corrosive chemistry, and provides superior wear resistance
in abrasive applications and high pressures. Nozzle orifices are made of pink sintered ceramic and reinforced
by special oxides.
POLYACETAL (P) — Provides good resistance to most chemicals and superior resistance to wear with
most agricultural chemistry. Susceptible to strong mineral acids and a few organic solvents. Resistance to
most alkalis is excellent. Organic solvents usually cause slight swelling without any other harmful effect.
STAINLESS STEEL (SS) — Good resistance to chemicals and average wear resistance.
BRASS (B) — Average resistance to most chemistry and poor wear resistance. Susceptible to
corrosion, especially with fertilizers.

Ultra Low-drift Air (ULA)
ULTRA low drift — The ULA nozzle with dual air-eduction technology produces large air-filled droplets,
optimizing drift control and target coverage. The wide 120-degree spray angle enables the boom height
to be lowered to further reduce drift. The UL is ideal for use with pre-emergence and broad-spectrum
systemic products. Unlike other air-aspirated nozzles, the UL is precision molded completely out of
polyacetal. Independent tests show that polyacetal wears up to two times longer than stainless steel,
providing superior wear resistance. The UL’s small, compact size reduces the chance for breakage.

Ultra Plus Low-drift Air (ULAC)
ULTRA-Plus low drift ceramic — The ULAC air-aspirated spray nozzle produces large air-filled drop-
lets that burst on impact, providing optimum drift-control capability and good target coverage.
Its special two-part construction includes a removable pre-orifice, which makes cleaning easy. The
ceramic nozzle and pre-orifice provide a long wear life, up to three times longer than stainless steel.

Twin Air (TAQ)
Twin Air — Twin Air spray nozzles are the best choice for high coverage applications where on target
spray delivery is important. They are ideal for low crops with complex canopies, such as vegetables,
where through coverage of the target and protection of the surroundings are of high importance.

Low-drift Air (LDA)
Low-drift air — LDA spray nozzles are patented air-educted nozzles specially designed toward
achieving superior results.
• Produces air-induced sprays for reduced drift and environmental impact while increasing
droplet deposition and retention on the foliage
• Provides better coverage with more drops per US gallon
• Optimized for the productivity of the most common application rates
• Delivers faster work rates with better drift reduction, allowing for more productive spray days
• Each nozzle is clearly marked with an arrow indicating the direction of travel

Guardian TM (LDX)
Guardian LDX — Designed to create a more-consistent droplet size, the new Guardian LDX quick-
change nozzle reduces the amount of “driftable fines” across a wide variety of pressure settings.
The one-piece design includes nozzle, cap, gasket, and strainer for easier handling. Its 120-degree
angled pattern lets you spray closer to the target, reducing drift, while improving uniformity. A unique
20-degree incline increases application versatility to control diseases, insects, and weeds. And a bold
arrow on the spray nozzle indicates incline direction for easy installation, and allows you to adjust
your application to match the target. To aim the spray, simply aim the arrow.
23
JOHN DEERE SPRAY PARTS
Low-drift (LD)
Low-drift poly — The drift-reducing LD nozzle produces fewer fine droplets than a standard flat fan
and, with its dual air-education technology, produces large air-filled droplets, optimizing drift control
and target coverage. Because of its drift-reducing flat spray, it allows operations in a wider weather
window. Unlike other drift-reducing nozzles, the flow from the LD is a straight route through the
nozzle, which decreases the chance for clogging. Made from polyacetal, the LD nozzle provides supe-
rior wear resistance, up to twice as long as stainless steel.

Low-drift Ceramic (LDC)
Low-drift Ceramic — The drift-reducing LDC nozzle produces fewer fine droplets than a standard
flat fan and, with its dual air-eduction technology, produces large air-filled droplets, optimizing drift
control and target coverage. Unlike other drift-reducing nozzles, the flow from the LDC is a straight
route through the nozzle, which decreases the chance for clogging. The ceramic nozzle and pre-orifice
provide a long wear life, up to three times longer than stainless steel.

ating pressures — down to 15 psi — making it ideal for use with automatic rate controllers. It delivers
a versatile spray pattern for applications of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, and growth regula-
tions. Molded completely out of polyacetal, the ER tip provides up to two times longer wear resistance
to most agricultural chemicals compared to a stainless-steel insert.

High Flow — The HF spray nozzle features a unique flat-fan spray design for excellent spray distribu-
tion and free flow for improved spray consistency. Low CV (Coefficient of Variation) performance rat-
ings provide excellent distribution. The 140-degree angled spray pattern provides excellent distribu-
tion in wide-spaced setups (30, 40, 45, or 60 inch). Made from polyacetal, the high-flow spray nozzle
provides superior wear resistance.

Flood (FL)
Flood— The FL nozzle produces large droplets in a wide, flat, 105- to 145-degree spray angle pattern
suited for pre- and post-emergent herbicides. This flexible nozzle can be used in 20- to 60-inch nozzle
spacing applications. Its large orifice produces coarser droplets, which are less prone to drift. The FL’s
large, circular orifice reduces the chances of blocking. Made from polyacetal, the FL nozzle provides
superior wear

Even Spray (ES)
Even-spray poly — The ES nozzle produces a flat, even spray which provides uniform distribution
across the spray band. It is an excellent choice for band applications of pre and post-emergent herbi-
cides and fungicides, and directed post applications. The band width can be changed by adjusting the
spray nozzle height. Made from polyacetal, the ES nozzle provides superior wear resistance to agricul-
tural chemicals.

droplet spectrum makes this product suited for applications of herbicides, fungicides, insecticides,
and PGRs. It also allows effective delivery and retention of agrochemicals. The CR nozzle is produced
from polyvinylydene fluoride for use in demanding chemical situations, such as acid-based defoliation
products.
