What is Genre?

Genre is a format of different categories in films, theatre,

literature. TV, music and art.

List at least six different film genres:

SHAUN OF THE DEAD

Comedy
Horror
Action
Fantasy
Romance
SCI-FI

Choose one specific genre and discuss its key elements e.g. characters,
locations, themes, props, certain films of this genre etc.

Horror Comedy
Key elements: Needs humour, needs some horror and gore, out of the ordinary
Characters: Protagonist who doesn’t doesn’t have plot armour – very ordinary character who
doesn’t normally take risks
Locations: Everyday locations, possibly real life locations, very realistic, woodland, cities,
remote places,
Themes End of the world, nightmare scenarios,
Props: Make up, fake weapons, green screen, everyday objects, fake glass, lighting props,
fake blood, fake wooden fences and shed door, different tones of music in different scenes,
Films of this genre include: Shaun of the Dead, Zombieland, Goosebumps 1 & 2, American
Werewolf in London, Happy Death 1&2, The Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse.
Codes and conventions: Camerawork and lighting effects tend to be expensive to portray
both realistic and unrealistic effects
Now chose one specific film example and discuss how it fits this genre….

SHAUN OF THE DEAD

The way it is scripted is a comedy horror theme, has jokes and scarry parts. That stands out to
the non-believer that you are expecting it to be horror and you are not expecting the comedy.
It has dark and light colours. When horror side is presented, it is dark and quiet. When jokey
scenes happen, they are more festive
Reviews have thought it to be more comedy than horror and people were not expecting so much
comedy, they were expecting more horror effects.

Mixing horror and humour is no mean feat, but Shaun Of the Dead tightens throats in fear
without making the laughs stick there in the process.

The power of the movie is in its professionalism.

This is the best mix of beer and blood I have ever tasted. "Shaun of the Dead" has some great
comical moments and yet it has been made with lots of professionalism like this was a serious
gory horror movie they were making. Because of this, through its seriousness, the movie
becomes perhaps even more hilarious and really delivers. Both the fans of the (British) comedy-
genre and the fans of mainly 'Zombie' movies and other gory horror-movies, will be entertained
by this movie.
