Quiz # 1

CHAPTER 1 : PARTICLE NATURE OF MATTER

1. Define expansion and contraction with suitable examples .

Expansion happens when a solid is heated and the particles vibrate and push each
other away from themselves this increases in volume and the solid expands same
with the liquid
Contraction is if the temperature of a solid or liquid increases the volume also
increases and if it decreases the volume also decreases

2. Explain what happens to the metal particles when solid metal expands?
The metal particles will vibrate more and take up more space
3. Define boiling point with examples of water and ethanol
Boiling point is the point where temperature at which the bubbles of gas are
equal to the pressure of the gas above it or the atmospheric pressure the boiling
point of water is 100c and the boiling point of ethanol is 79c

4. What do you mean by physical change and chemical change? Give

examples. Physical change is where no new substance is formed without
changing the molecule or compound such as mixing sand and water, melting
ice. chemical change is the arrangement of atoms of one or more
substances to create a new one digesting food, backing a cake etc

5. What do you understand by the term atmospheric pressure?

Atmospheric pressure is when the force is exerted on the surface of the
earth by the air above it as gravity pulls it to earth

6. What are liquid crystals? Write some of their uses.

liquid crystals flow like liquid but due to their arrangement of particles they
act like crystals this can be found in (t.v, watches, calculators, digital clocks)
7. Draw a cooling curve for water
.
8. Ice on a car windscreen will disappear as you drive along, even without the
heater on. Explain why this happens.
This happens because 1)sublimation takes place and for some of the water
molecules might be moving faster and some slower due to the different
temperature in an individual molecule ,hence some molecules leave the
surface of the ice on the wind shield and some are blown away by the wind

9. Differentiate between diffusion and effusion with suitable figures.

Diffusion is when a particle moves from a high concentration to low concentration

Effusion is when a particle moves from a high concentration to low concentration but with a
small hole or opening

10. What is evaporation?

Evaporation happens when the particles of liquid are constantly escaping from the liquid in the
form of vapors or the prosses of turning liquid into vapors

11.Describe what happens to the particles of the solid during change E.

The particles of solid absorb enough energy to completely overcome the
force of attraction between them which is also called sublimation
12.Which of the changes A to E will involve ?
(i) an input of heat energy?

an output of heat energy
