Vandkunsten – Wood
Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2021 ISBN 9789189270008 Acqn 31365
Pb 17x23cm 192pp col ills £30

Wood is simply a clever material in a climate crisis - but that is not it - wood is a living material
and so are we, and there is a special relationship between the human body and the material.
While technological developments make this low-tech material the most digitalized and energy
efficient to build with, wood's naturally smart properties offer healthy interiors, low-maintenance
exteriors, and spaces for happy lives?

Vandkunsten - Woodfeatures 9 recent wood-based projects by renowned Danish architecture

studio Vandkunsten Architects who have shaped the contemporary use of wood in Nordic
architecture over five decades. Projects include the flexible housing at Lisbjerg Bakke, the Arctic
House in Greenland, and Senior Cohousing at Diakonissestiftelsen.

Amos Rex Art Museum
Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2021 ISBN 9789189270022 Acqn 31504
Hb 19x25cm 120pp col ills £33.50

Since its opening, the Amos Rex Art Museum, designed by JKMM architects, has been a great
public and architectural success. It is tucked away underground in the ancient glass palace in the
heart of central Helsinki.

Through its architecture, it has set new boundaries for what a museum can and should be. With
its huge arched exhibition halls and eye-catching lanterns that make it feel as though it is above
ground, the building never fails to surprise.

Art museums seldom manage to be fully functional for all types of art, new and old, and at the
same time deliver an architecturally strong experience that changes the city. But here, everything
is in place, states Lars Nittve in one of the book's essays. In this book, a close-up of the museum
is drawn in words, sketches, and pictures.

Contemporary Copenhagen – Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects
Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2021 ISBN 9789198533538 Acqn 31725
Pb 25x28cm 272pp col ills £59

For almost a century, Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects has aimed to make the Danish capital a better
city to live in. The studio strives for a design that transcends time and manages a constantly
changeable reality, and is behind many of the most notable contemporary community buildings in
Copenhagen, such as the Danish Radio House, Copenhagen Airport, the Kroyers Plads
residential district, New North Zealand Hospital, and DR Byen, headquarters of the Danish
Broadcasting Corporation. The conviction held by the studio's founder, Vilhelm Theodor Lauritzen
(1894-1984), that "architecture is applied art for the people - never a privilege for the few", lives
on in its projects today.

Offecct + Lucy Kurrein
Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2021 ISBN 9789198667325 Acqn 31729
Hb 13x17cm 64pp col ills £17

The third book about Offecct's collaborations with various designers from around the world is a
personal and open-hearted conversation with Lucy Kurrein. She's been very involved in the
creation of the book and offers a unique insight into the world of images and ideas that has
shaped her design philosophy. In the book, we follow design writer Max Fraser to Lucy Kurrein's
studio for a personal and sincere conversation. The extensive visual material that Kurrein herself
has selected reflects her personality, sources of inspiration and design process. Just as in her
work, we meet a designer where care for every detail results in a natural simplicity that requires
time.

Lucy Kurrein began her career on an Art Foundation Diploma at the Leeds College of Art and
Design. She went on to study Furniture Design at Buckinghamshire University where she
graduated in 2007. After some years at Matthew Hiltons' and Pearson Lloyds' respectively, all
British Royal Designers for Industry, she set up her own design studio in London in 2013. The
same year she launched her first sofa in collaboration with SCP. In 2015 Lucy was awarded
"Young Furniture Designer of the Year" by Homes and Gardens magazine. She is one of the
most exciting new designers working in Europe today.

Bertil Vallien – Atlas
Arvinius + Orfeus Publishing 2021 ISBN 9789189270183 Acqn 31723
Hb 26x26cm 408pp col ills £62

Bertil Vallien is ranked today as one of the world's foremost artists with glass as material. He has
worked with glass for more than 60 years, and is represented, among other places, at the
Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg in Russia and at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York City in the United States.

In Atlas, we take part of Vallien's world through his thoughts, words and stories - accompanied by
a rich visual flow of art glass, sketches and newly taken pictures from his studio and cabin. We
get a premonition of the demanding work process that results in these unique glass sculptures,
which is an example of when skilled craftsmanship and artistry meet.

Vallien's sources of inspiration derive in everything from the story of the girl Karolina, who slept
for 32 years, to the black series Desert Snow. His famous crafts have been developing from the
first one in ceramics to the later ones in advanced sand casting in glass. This is a technique that
he has been developing for decades, which has made it possible for him to increase the sizes of
his pieces. Passage, the largest glass boat in the world, was created by Bertil Vallien.

Atlas is an unusual book at 400 pages, with Peer Eriksson behind the graphic design and idea.
The images come, aside from Peer, from photographers that Vallien use when the pieces are
photographed for catalogues and exhibitions.
