After a year with several launches and many rumors, the list of products that should
arrive before this one ends is considerably long. From the iPhone 13 and the Apple
Watch Series 7 to the third generation AirPods or the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pros, it
seems that Apple will choose to divide so many launches into various events.

In the latest edition of his weekly newsletter, Mark Gurman explains that Apple is
preparing several events for this fall. The first will be, of course, the presentation event
of the new iPhone 13. Although according to the Bloomberg reporter this iPhone
should be a “classic model S”, surely Apple will end up calling this iPhone “iPhone 13”.
An iPhone with a smaller notch, new cameras, A15 processor, ProMotion at 120Hz for
Pro models, and much more.

In this same event, we will see the new Apple Watch Series 7. Here Gurman expects “a
bit of redesign” with a flatter screen and improvements in internal technology
including a faster and more powerful processor. Rumors suggest that we could see an
Apple Watch with a square design, similar to that of the iPhone 12.

Then we should see the launch of the new third-generation AirPods. Some AirPods

that, according to Gurman, “will have a design very similar to the AirPods Pro,
including a new in-ear shape and shorter legs.” A launch that will represent “the most
significant update to an AirPod since the first model was launched in 2016, according
to the reporter.

Also this fall we will see the launch of the new iPad mini 6 as well as the 9th generation
iPad. Of the first Gurman affirms that “it is destined to become the favorite of many
fans with its small edges after a complete redesign. The latest rumors claim that this
iPad mini would have an A15 processor, USB-C connector, and a Smart Connector. Of
the second, the ninth-generation entry-level iPad, Gurman just announces that “a
thinner and faster iPad for students is coming.”

To close the list of news, Gurman tells us about the 14 and 16-inch MacBook Pro. We
do not expect these computers to be released in September. The Bloomberg report
claims that these new Macs should appear just when the current 16-inch MacBook Pro
turns two, which puts us in November. A few Macs that will complete the transition to
Apple silicon from Apple’s portable range and that will usher in the arrival of mini-LED
screens on our computers.

Actually, the list of news that we will see before the end of the year is the most
interesting. New features that, in almost all cases, go beyond simple updates to be
complete redesigns or significant internal changes. We do not know if we will see two
or three events, we will not know if there will be an audience or they will be entirely
virtual, what we do know is that the wait will be more than compensated. In fact, as of
today, the invitation to the first of the events can arrive, so we will be attentive.

Created a Bill to ‘Hack’ The App Store

This week a bill was put on the table that would effectively ban the App Store in its
current form, as expected. Legislation that has little chance of being passed, but that
also hides a real back door that would make it useless.

Promote competition and reduce the power of platform owners in the app industry,
increase choice, improve quality and reduce costs for consumers.

This is the brief introduction with which the so-called Open App Markets Act or Open
App Markets Act is presented. It will apply to any company that has more than 50
million users in the US, called “Covered Companies” (a Platform). In practice, it is a law
that seeks to ban Apple’s App Store as we know it, although it would also partly affect
Google’s. At the moment, it is a proposal that still has to be approved by a majority in
the US Congress and later in the Senate. Something that does not seem to be
guaranteed at the moment.

In any case, this law compiles all the requests made by companies during the
investigation of big technology last year. And they translate into the following bans on
app stores:

• Use an in-app payment system owned by the Platform as a condition for

distributing the app.

• Demand a price equal to or lower than that found for the app on other distribution
sites.

• Harming a developer in any way by using another form of payment in-app or in

another App Store.

• Prevent communication with the user of better offers in other places or platforms.

• Use data from the distribution of third-party apps to create your own app or
service.

Additionally, it obliges the App Stores to the following:

• Allow the choice of apps or App Stores by default.

• Install third-party apps or App Stores.

• Delete or remove pre-installed apps or App Stores.

It cannot be said that lawmakers have not paid attention to companies like Spotify,
Epic, or Tile. Quite the contrary. Here we find a fully satisfying wish list. That is, if not
for Section 4 found in the same proposal.

Section 4 and the exception in favor of privacy and security

If we go further into this legislative proposal, we will come across the curious Section 4,
whose title is “Protection of the security and privacy of users.” In it, it is specified that
“the Platform will not violate” this law as long as an action is to:

• Protect privacy, security, or digital security.

• Avoid spam or fraud.

• Comply with or avoid violating a Federal or State law.

A series of requirements are listed below, the intention of which is to ensure that the
application of these exceptions is not arbitrary but homogeneous to all developers.
Effectively, this section gives Apple the ability to continue managing its App Store in a
current way. It is a kind of amendment that completely changes the desired result,
which does not surprise us if we look at how the investigation of big technology went:
the app store tiptoed into the eyes of legislators.

As we said a few months ago, allowing the installation of apps from outside the App
Store poses security, privacy, and fraud risk. Demonstrating this should not involve a
great effort for Apple, since it has already published a report on the role of the App
Store and its protection measures for the user, attacking the so-called sideloading and
third-party stores. The result of what the company exposes would put users in a more
vulnerable position than the current one.
