Activity Title
Calculations on the Most Common Surface Areas

Key Concepts

It is very important to be able to understand measurements. Nearly all countries of the world use
the official system of measurement – the SI (Systems International) system of units often referred to as
the metric system. If conversion is needed, the applicable conversion factor to an equal value must be
used. A conversion factor is a number used to change one set of units to another, by multiplying or dividing.

A unit cancellation table is developed by using known units, conversion factors, and the fact that a
unit of measure divided by the same unit. The table is set up, so all the units cancel except for the desired
unit.

In farming, the simplest and the common quantities and units are used by farmers in computing
the farm activities.

❖ Conversion factors for fundamental quantities:

a. for length:1 m= 100 cm; 1000 m= 1km

1
b. for mass:1 kg= 1000g
c. for time: 1 min=60s; 1h=60min

❖ Conversion factors for derived quantities:

a. for surface area:10000 m 2 =1ha (hectare)
b. for volume: 1m3=1000 L (Litres)

Examples:

1. 2 m = ____cm
2 m x 100 cm = 2 x 100 cm = 200 cm
1m 1

2. 5 kg = ____ g
5 kg x 1000 g = 5 x 1000 g = 5000 g
1 kg 1

3. 1 hr = ____ seconds (s)

1 hr x 60 min x 60 s = 3600 s
1 hr 1 min

4. 20 000 m2 = _____ ha
20 000 m2 x 1 ha = 20 000 ha = 2 ha
2
10 000 m 10 000

5. 2 m3 = _____ L
2 m3 x 1000 L = 2000 L
m3

It is important to be able to measure and calculate surface areas. It might be necessary to calculate,
for example, the surface area of the cross-section of a canal or the surface area of a farm.

Table 1 shows the most common surface areas and formula to be used in calculation.

Surface Area Formula

Area (A)
A (triangle) = 0.5 x base x height
1. Triangle A = 0.5 x b x h
A (square or rectangle) = length x width
A=lxw
2. Square and Rectangle
A (rhombus or parallelogram) = base x height
A=bxh
3. Rhombus and Parallelogram
A (trapezium) = 0.5 (base + top) x height
A = 0.5 (b + a) x h
4. Trapezium

A = 1/4 ( π x d²) = 1/4 (3.14 x d x d)

5. Circle

2
Example:

1. Calculate the surface area of the triangle.

Given Answer
base = 3 cm Formula: A = 0.5 x b x h
height = 2 cm = 0.5 x 3 cm x 2 cm
A = 3 cm2

2. Calculate the surface areas of the square and the rectangle.

Given Answer
a. Square: length = 2 cm Formula: A = l x w
width = 2 cm = 2 cm x 2 cm
A = 4 cm2
b. Rectangle: length = 5 cm Formula: A = l x w
width = 3 cm = 5 cm x 3 cm
A = 15 cm2

3. Calculate the surface areas of the rhombus and the parallelogram.

Given Answer
a. Rhombus: base = 3 cm Formula: A = b x h
height = 2 cm = 3 cm x 2 cm
A = 6 cm2

b. Parallelogram: base = 3.5 cm Formula: A = b x h

height = 3 cm = 3.5 cm x 3 cm
A = 10.5 cm2

4. Calculate the surface area of trapezium.

Given Answer
base = 4 cm Formula: A = 0.5 x (b + a) x h
top (a) = 2 cm = 0.5 x (4 cm + 2 cm) x 2 cm
height = 2 cm = 0.5 x 6 cm x 2 cm
A = 6 cm2

5. Calculate the surface area of a circle with a diameter of 3 m.

Given Answer
d=3m Formula: A = ¼ (π x d²)
A = ¼ (3.14 x d x d)
= ¼ (3.14 x 3 m x 3 m)
A = 7.07 m2

Activity Title
Determination of the Surface Area of a Farm

It may be necessary to determine the surface area of a farmer’s field. For example, when calculating
how much irrigation water should be given to a certain field, the size of the field must be known.

When the shape of the field is regular and has, for example a rectangular shape, it should not be
too difficult to calculate the surface area once the length of the field (that is the base of its regular shape)
and the width of the field have been measured.

Field of regular shape

50 m

EXAMPLE

Given Answer
Length of the field = 50 m Formula: A = length x width
Width of the field = 30 m = 50 m x 30 m
A = 1500 m2
Question:

What is the area of the same field, expressed in hectares (ha)?

1500 m2 = ______ha

Answer
1 ℎ𝑎
1500 𝑚 2 = 10 000 𝑚2

1 ℎ𝑎
1500 𝑚 2 = = 0. 15 ha
10 000 𝑚 2

More often, however, the shape is not regular, as shown in the Figure below:

Field of Irregular Shape

5
✓ Division of irregular field into regular areas

Surface area of the square: As = length x width = 30 m x 30 m = 900 m 2

Surface area of the rectangle: A r = length x width = 50 m x 15 m = 750 m 2
Surface area of the triangle: A t = 0.5 x base x height = 0.5 x 20 m x 30 m = 300 m 2
Total surface area of field: A = As + Ar + At = 900 m2 + 750 m2 + 300 m2 = `1950 m2
