II. RATIONALE DESCRIPTION:

The COVID-19 global pandemic has affected

the lives of the world’s population and has emerged as a
global health emergency with unprecedented paralyzing
situation on all fronts. It has necessitated closure of
schools, physical distancing and loss of familiar
environments. It brought restriction on movement,
disruption of routines, curtailment of social interactions
and deprivation of traditional learning methods which
led to increased pressure, stress and anxiety for all, for
the young people, their families and communities.

In view of the widespread impact that healthcare

emergencies exert on the population, it is prudent to –
before, during and even after the crisis – screen and
look out for patients who may need psychosocial
support. People at risk include those who have suffered
from COVID-19 or whose family members were
infected, and those whose income or basic needs have
been affected. Patients with a history of psychiatric
disorders such as anxiety, depression and substance
abuse are also predisposed to coping difficulties.
Furthermore, there is a greater risk of domestic abuse
(e.g. rape) during emergencies, especially with
movement restriction measures during COVID-19.
On the other hand, there has been increasing
concern about youth’s behavior with respect to a range
of health related behavior including drugs,
incorporating legal substances or commonly known as
“gateway drugs” such as tobacco and alcohol which
may include the rampant use of marijuana to youngsters
that affects the behaviors resulting to bullying and racial
discrimination towards others. The issue concerning
over, teenage pregnancy and related health issues and
the growing concern about the physical, mental and
social well-being of the young people need a pro-active
action. Hence, early intervention on Mental Health
and Psychosocial Support is indeed important.

Mental health and psychosocial support

(MHPSS) includes any support that people receive to
protect or promote their mental health and psychosocial
wellbeing.
One major component of MHPSS is treatment and
prevention of psychiatric disorders such as depression,
anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
