USES TECHNOLOGY IN THE CONDUCT OF

LESSON 1 SURVEY TO FIND OUT THE ELEMENTS TO BE

OBSERVED IN PLANTING TREES AND FRUIT-
BEARING TREES
WHAT I NEED
TO KNOW
At the end of this lesson, you are expected to identify technology in
the conduct of survey for the elements to be observed in planting trees
and fruit-bearing trees, use technology in the conduct of survey, and
value the importance of using technology in planting operation.

WHAT I KNOW
Activity No 1. Multiple Choice: Read and understand carefully the
statements below. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.
1. It is the important factor which affects the growth of the trees. It has been
observed that varieties of trees grow best in certain climatic conditions
A. Climate B. Temperature C. Soil D. Air

2. The growth of the plants depends upon the degree of how cold or hot the
atmosphere is at certain period of time.
A. Air B. Temperature C. Plant D. Soil

3. It is the main provider of energy in the process of food manufacture of

the plant.
A. Sunlight B. Temperature C. Plant D. Climate
4. It is very important in the growth of all kinds of plants and trees.
However, it must be controlled or moderate so as not to flood and drown
the growing trees with water
A. Climate B. Plant C. RainfallD. Soil

1
5. It is the medium for growing in the trees which provides nutrients in
plants as it contains mineral elements necessary for a normal plant growth
and development of the trees.
A. Soil B. Plant C. Climate D. Rainfal

6. It is composed of inorganic substances with varying amounts of decaying

and partly decayed organic matter which would help in the growth of the
plants.
A. Plant and water
B. Soil and water
C. Mineral Soil and Organic Soil
D. Water and oil

7. These are added to the soil to increase its productivity.

A. Fertilizers B. Soil C. Water D. Air

8. To plant a tree, _____ is need as a source of its energy and rain, this is
important to its growth and can help us whenever there are flash floods in
our area.
A. Sunlight B. Pot C. Soil D. Air

9. It provides the plant with its nutrients and minerals for its growth and
development.
A. Water B. The soil for planting C. Soil D. Fertile soil

10. The elements to be observed in planting a tree are its factors that can
sustain __________.
A. Water B. The soil for planting C. Soil D. Fertile soil

WHAT’s IN?
Can you still remember about your past lesson? It talks about successful orchard growers
in the communities or adjacent communities. Am I right? Can you give a short detail
about the successful orchard growers in the communities or adjacent communities?
Activity No. 2
Direction: Describe the two pictures below.

PICTURE 1.

PICTURE 2.
__________________________________________________
There are two ways of planting: direct and indirect. Direct planting
is a method of planting where the seeds of a plant are directly planted in the
soil where it will germinate and grow into full-grown trees. In indirect
planting, the plant needs to be transferred to its permanent place.

WHAT’s NEW?

3
At this point in time you are going to learn another topic; it is all about
the uses of technology in the conduct of survey to find out the elements to
be observed in planting trees and fruit-bearing trees. But before that, know
first these important words.
1. Fertile soil – a place where something begins or develops in large
amounts.
2. Seed – a flowering plant’s unit of reproduction, capable of developing
into another such plant.
3. Moisture – is the water stored in the soil and is affected by
precipitation, temperature, soil characteristics, and more.
4. Germinate – refers to the process by which an organism grows from
a seed or a spore.
5. Suit – it is the right size or shape for you or for that place.

Why is it important to follow different ways in planting trees and other

fruit-bearing trees in every area in our locality? The following are the
proper ways in caring the plant and soil:
 Choose the best place for planting
 Choose the seeds that best suit the season and the soil
 Put sufficient fertilizers in the soil
 Take care of the soil and the plants regularly

WHAT IS IT?
Now, you will learn another topic: The uses of technology in the
conduct of survey to find out the elements to be observed in planting trees
and fruit-bearing trees.

4
Why are proper ways in caring trees and fruit bearing trees important?
To ensure a higher rate of survival, follow these processes:
1. Thinning – To produce strong plants, pull out some crowded
seedlings so that the remaining plants will have more room

2. Pricking – This is done by transferring seedlings from one seed box

to another to provide more space for proper development. Water the
seedlings first before pricking.

3. Hardening – This process is done 7 to 15 days before transplanting.

What are the general steps in the proper transferring of planting trees
and fruit-bearing trees?

5
Follow the general steps in the proper transferring of plants:
1. Digging the Hole
Planting too deep is the top reason that trees and shrubs die.
2. Backfill
The thinking of backfill has changed in recent years. Although it was
once common to modify the backfill soil with amendments such as
compost, peat moss, aged manure and other ingredients.
3. Planting
When moving your plant into the planting hole, disturb the root ball
as little as possible.
4. Mulching
Apply bark mulch or pine straw to a depth of 2” to 3” over the entire
planting hole. Mulching helps conserve water and prevent weeds.
5. Staking
Staking at planting time is not always necessary. Consider the
stability of the root ball, trunk size and strength, direction of
prevailing winds, canopy size and density when determining whether
or not to stake.

6. Fertilizing
Fertilizing newly planted trees and shrubs during their first year of
growth is not recommended.
7. Watering
The roots should never be dry completely, nor should they be
waterlogged.

WHAT’s MORE?
Please read and observe the following picture on the steps on how to plant a tree or
fruit-bearing tree and do this at the back of your house while you are at home due to
COVID situation.

WHAT I HAVE
Activity No.3 LEARNED
Direction: Match Column A with the corresponding technology in the Column B.
Column A Column B
A. It is not always necessary. The stability of the root ball,
1. Mulching trunk size and strength, direction of prevailing winds, canopy
size and density must be considered.
B. Apply bark mulch or pine straw to a depth of 2” to 3”
2. Staking over the entire planting hole.

WHAT I CAN DO
Activity No. 4 Interview your parent/s or a neighbour about how to take
good care of the trees and fruit-bearing trees. Ask about what they do to
maintain the health and safety of their plants.

ASSESSMENT
Activity No. 5
Direction: TRUE or FALSE.
In fruit production, select a variety of tree that is not found in the
1.
locality.
2. Select planting materials in low quality.

3. Low variety of seedling will be best to plant.

4. Geographical area should always be considered in planting fruit trees.

Soil provides nutrients in plants and contains mineral elements
5.
necessary for normal plant growth and development of the trees.
6. Choose the seeds that best suit the season and the soil.

7. Place the tree in the center of the hole.

8. Use the stick to check the moisture of the soil.

9. Don’t allow the root system to dry out before or during planting.
Plant your seedlings in the afternoon when the sunlight is no longer hot
10.
to avoid withering.
