PURPOSE OF STAGE: THE STAGE SERVES AS A SPACE FOR ACTORS OR PERFORMERS AND A FOCAL POINT (THE SCREEN IN CINEMA
THEATERS) FOR THE AUDIENCE. AS AN ARCHITECTURAL FEATURE, THE STAGE MAY CONSIST OF A PLATFORM (OFTEN RAISED) OR
SERIES OF PLATFORMS.
PART OF STAGE: A STAGE IS DIVIDED UP INTO NINE PARTS: UPSTAGE LEFT, UPSTAGE RIGHT, UPSTAGE CENTER, CENTER, CENTER
LEFT, CENTER RIGHT, DOWN STAGE LEFT, DOWN STAGE RIGHT, AND DOWN STAGE CENTER. DOWN STAGE BEING CLOSEST TO THE
AUDIENCE.

PROSCENIUM IS THE MOST COMMON STAGE USED IN THE WEST WHICH MAY ALSO BE REFERRED TO AS A PICTURE FRAME STAGE.
THE PRIMARY FEATURE IS A LARGE OPENING KNOWN AS THE PROSCENIUM ARCH THROUGH WHICH THE AUDIENCE VIEWS THE
PERFORMANCE. THE AUDIENCE DIRECTLY FACES THE STAGE—WHICH IS TYPICALLY RAISED SEVERAL FEET ABOVE FRONT ROW
AUDIENCE LEVEL—AND VIEWS ONLY ONE SIDE OF THE SCENE. THIS ONE SIDE IS COMMONLY KNOWN AS THE INVISIBLE FOURTH
WALL OF THE SCENE. THE PROSCENIUM ARCH EVOLVED FROM THE PROSKENIUM IN ANCIENT GREEK THEATERS.
THE THRUST STAGE IS THE EARLIEST STAGE TYPE IN WESTERN THEATRE, FIRST APPEARING IN GREEK THEATRES.
A THEATRE IN THE ROUND, ARENA THEATRE OR CENTRAL STAGING IS A SPACE FOR THEATRE IN WHICH THE AUDIENCE
SURROUNDS THE STAGE.
THEATRE-IN-THE-ROUND WAS COMMON IN ANCIENT THEATRE, PARTICULARLY THAT OF GREECE AND ROME, BUT WAS NOT
WIDELY EXPLORED AGAIN UNTIL THE LATTER HALF OF THE 20TH CENTURY.
ARENA THEATRES ARE LARGE SCALE AUDITORIA AND HAVE A CENTRAL STAGE AREA WITH AUDIENCES ON ALL SIDES, SIMILAR TO
THEATRES IN-THE-ROUND. THE STAGE AREA IS USUALLY RECTANGULAR, MORE LIKE A SPORTS ARENA, WITH TIERED SEATING.
BLACK BOX THEATERS HAVE THEIR ROOTS IN THE EUROPEAN AVANT-GARDE OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY. THE BLACK BOX
THEATERS BECAME POPULAR AND INCREASINGLY WIDESPREAD IN THE 1960’S AS REHEARSAL SPACES.
PLATFORM STAGES ARE USUALLY CONSIST OF A RAISED RECTANGULAR PLATFORM AT ONE END OF A ROOM. THEY CAN EITHER
HAVE A LEVEL OR RAKED SLOPING FLOOR. THE AUDIENCE SIT IN ROWS FACING THE STAGE. PLATFORM STAGES ARE OFTEN USED IN
MULTI-PURPOSE HALLS WHERE THEATRE IS ONLY ONE OF THE SPACE'S USES.
THE KABUKI STAGE FEATURES A PROJECTION CALLED A HANAMICHI "FLOWER PATH", A WALKWAY WHICH EXTENDS INTO THE
AUDIENCE AND VIA WHICH DRAMATIC ENTRANCES AND EXITS ARE MADE. OKUNI ALSO PERFORMED ON A HANAMICHI STAGE
WITH HER ENTOURAGE. THE STAGE IS USED NOT ONLY AS A WALKWAY OR PATH TO GET TO AND FROM THE MAIN STAGE, BUT
IMPORTANT SCENES ARE ALSO PLAYED ON THE STAGE.
SOFT LAMPS – DIFFUSE LIGHTS AND WRAPS AROUND THE SUBJECT MAINLY TO REDUCE SHADOWS ON
STAGE. THEY ARE BOXLIKE AND TYPICALLY PORTABLE.
BROAD LIGHTS – SMALL LIGHTS HOUSED IN A BOXLIKE CONTAINER AND TYPICALLY INCLUDE ONLY 1
LAMP. THEY ARE USED IN SMALL AREAS ON SET TO SUPPLEMENT LIGHTING TO LIGHTEN SHADOWS
AND NOT CHANGE THE CHARACTER OF THE MAIN LIGHT.
FIXED-FOCUS LIGHTING – COVERS A WIDE AREA OF THE STAGE WITH AN EVEN AND CONTROLLABLE
FIELD OF LIGHT.
SPOTLIGHTS – PROJECT BEAMS OF LIGHT COMING ONTO THE STAGE. LED LIGHT SOURCES MAKE
EXCELLENT SPOTLIGHTS. LED LIGHTS SUCH AS SSRC’S LED WORK LIGHT PROVIDE VERY STRONG LIGHT
SOURCES FOR STAGES.
