7. REPLACEMENT OF MISSING OR DAMAGED RIVETS ON SEAT BEAMS

A. Reason for the Job

(1) Seat assemblies described in this CMM are equipped with inner beams, i.e. smaller−diameter
tubes inside the front and rear seat beams. On seats manufactured later than Apr 25/2013, or
which were retrofitted accordingly by incorporation of SB 3510−25−643, each inner beam is
fastened to the outer seat beam with 2 blind rivets. This REPAIR task describes how to replace
any of these rivets which might be damaged or missing.

(2) The type of blind rivets to fasten inner beams to outer seat beams was changed to improve
reliability. The rivets are one−way interchangeable. The new type of rivet is installed during this
REPAIR task and must not be replaced with the old type. Replace only damaged or lost rivets.

(a) Old: Blind rivet AF24600 D2.4 KB2.0−4.0, RECARO P/N 315−50−636−51

(b) New: Blind rivet ST/ST D2.4 (POPR SD34BS or equiv.), RECARO P/N 043875

B. Job Set−Up Information

(3) Additionally required material and tools to reposition inner beams

Repositioning of a previously riveted inner beam is necessary if both rivets were lost and the inner
beam has moved or turned away from the original position.

(a) Spare fastening material for bumper panel and/or IAT armrest. Refer to IPL for required
material per each Seat P/N.

(b) Thread sealant to be applied to fasteners which are being reused. Use Loctitet 243 unless a
different product is indicated in the IPL for the respective screw joint.

(c) Additional fastening material as required if other items need to be removed to gain access.
Refer to Chapters IPL and SCHEMATIC AND WIRING DIAGRAMS.

(d) RECARO Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit, P/N 139W00−114−00. Refer to Figure 6002 below.

(e) Double−sided adhesive tape to be used with the Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit to facilitate
rotation of the inner beam if required. This consumable will not remain attached to the seat.

(4) Additional Documents

The following documents are useful as a reference during this repair, but are not strictly required.

(a) RECARO Service Bulletin 3510−25−643

Service Bulletin 3510−25−643 contains additional information, which is useful for application of
Special Tool P/N 139W00−114−00 if both rivets of an inner beam are to be replaced. It also
provides detailed removal and installation instructions for seat pans and bumper panels.

(b) RECARO Technical Note 3510−25−660

This Technical Note (TN) accompanies SB 3510−25−643 to provide dimensioned illustrations
of the inner beam and rivet positions for the affected seats described in this CMM. The TN
may be used for information, although even if both rivets on a previously riveted inner beam
are missing, the correct position can be restored by alignment of the existing drill holes.

(5) Suitable Work Environment

(a) Depending on applicable regulations regarding the permission to perform riveting in the
aircraft, it may or may not be feasible to accomplish this REPAIR inside the aircraft.

(b) If a inner beam is dislocated because both rivets are missing, the task involves repositioning
of the inner beam which is easier to accomplish in a suitable workshop outside the aircraft.

C. Job Set−Up

WARNING: RISK OF ELECTRIC SHOCK!

BEFORE STARTING WORK, DISCONNECT POWER SUPPLY AND MAKE SURE THAT
THE ELECTRICAL PARTS OR COMPONENTS ARE FREE OF ELECTRICAL CHARGE.

(1) Gain access to the area(s) on the seat beam(s) where any blind rivet AF24600 D2.4 KB2.0−4.0,
P/N 315−50−636−51 (old type) or ST/ST D2.4, P/N 043875 (new type), is missing or damaged:

(a) Remove seat bottom cushions with covers as necessary. Retain these items for reinstallation.

(b) Tilt up or uninstall seat bottoms as necessary. Refer to the IPL for seat bottom attachment
configurations and required spare parts (cable ties etc.) per each configuration.
NOTE: If cable ties or hose clamps are removed, remember the position and orientation of the
lock for subsequent reassembly. Keep the necessary spare parts available.

(c) Identify missing or damaged rivets. All affected rivets were installed at an angle of 45 degrees:

1 On the front seat beam: from FWD above or from rear below

2 On the rear seat beam: from rear above or FWD below

NOTE: If required, refer to Technical Note 3510−25−660 for rivet installation areas, and to SB
3510−25−643 for an illustration of permissible riveting angles as described above.

(d) If a rivet on the upper side of the rear seat beam must be replaced, remove the backrest
cushion with cover from the affected seat place for easy access.

(e) Remove any other items which interfere with required access to rivet positions. Refer to
Chapters DISASSEMBLY and IPL. Retain all items for reassembly except for single−use
fastening parts.

(2) If fragments of damaged rivets must be removed from inside the beam, or if an inner beam is
dislocated, gain access to an open end face of the affected seat beam(s), if not already accessible.
This can be done prior to further examination, or during the following procedure as required:

(a) On LH and RH seat assemblies which are uninstalled from the aircraft, seat beams are
usually open and accessible on the outboard side.

(b) If required to gain access from the aisle side, remove the bumper panel and/or IAT armrest
assembly. Refer to Chapter DISASSEMBLY for instructions, and to the IPL for attachment
configurations and required spare parts.

D. Procedure

CAUTION: DO NOT DRILL ANY NEW HOLES! INSTALL RIVETS ONLY IN EXISTING HOLES.

(1) Remove remains of damaged rivets from the rivet hole, without extending the diameter of the hole.
NOTE: A rivet of the same diameter will be installed in the existing rivet hole.

(2) Remove pieces which may be left over from lost or damaged rivets inside the seat beam(s), using
a vacuum cleaner with straight nozzle.

(3) If two adjacent rivets are missing or damaged, examine if the inner beam stayed correctly aligned
with the outer beam:

(a) Visually examine the empty drill holes on the seat beam to see if the inner beam has moved
or turned from its înitial position.

NOTE: In dark environments, use a flashlight to illuminate the inspection area.

(b) If the drill holes in the inner beam are not aligned with those in the outer beam, the inner
beam is out of position. Use the Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit, P/N 139W00−114−00
(illustrated in Figure 6002), to move the inner beam to its correct position:

1 Prepare the repositioning head for straight inner beams (the head element equipped with
a flat oval end plate) of the Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit. Refer to Figure 6003:

a Clean and degrease the end plate of the repositioning head.

b Attach double−sided adhesive tape to the flat surfaces of the repositioning plate.
Use a single piece of adhesive tape on each side. Do not use smaller segments, to
prevent accidental transfer of adhesive tape to the inner surface of the seat beam.
Cut the adhesive tape along the border of the plate. The perimeter of the plate must
be kept free from adhesive tape!

2 Insert the repositioning head of the Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit into the seat beam.

3 Add extension segments as necessary, securing each with a connecting clip (ES−bolt).
Refer to Figure 6002. If extension segments are added one by one, the Inner Beam
Positioning Toolkit can be used in confined spaces, e.g. when working in the aircraft.

4 Shift and, if necessary, turn the dislocated inner beam to its correct position until both drill
holes of the inner beam match those in the outer beam.

Supplementary information:

a A flashlight may be useful to track the movement of the inner beam.

b A second person should observe the alignment of the drill holes on the outer beam.

c The inner beam is correctly positioned when both drill holes of the inner beam
match the corresponding holes on the outer beam.

d It is recommended to keep the Inner Beam Positioning Toolkit in place until the first
rivet is installed, to prevent the inner beam from moving.

(4) Fasten the inner beam to the outer beam by installing a Blind rivet ST/ST D2.4 (POPR SD34BS or
equiv.), RECARO P/N 043875 in each unoccoupied, existing rivet hole on the seat beams.

E. Close−Up

(1) Reinstall each previously removed bumper panel and/or IAT armrest. Refer to Chapter IPL.

(a) Replace any damaged parts, e.g. screws, with new items. Refer to IPL for identification.

CAUTION: LOCTITE 243 THREAD SEALANT MUST NOT GET IN CONTACT WITH THE
PLASTIC MATERIAL OF THE BUMPER PANEL!
(b) Secure each screw by applying a small quantity of thread sealant. Use Loctitet 243 unless a
different product is indicated in the IPL for the respective screw joint.

(2) Reattach and secure each seat pan. Refer to the IPL for seat pan configurations and spare parts:

(a) Carefully engage any attachment clips on the seat beams.

(b) When cable ties or hose clamps are replaced or reinstalled:

1 Restore the previous position and orientation of the lock of each cable tie or hose clamp.

2 Tighten cable ties only slightly by hand, to prevent deformation of the seat bottom pan.

3 Cut off each cable tie at the lock evenly to prevent sharp edges.

4 Restore loop tape segments which were attached to hose clamps to prevent injuries.

(3) Reattach each previously removed backrest cushion with dress cover.
