The Cathedral

Finally, during the presidency of César Gaviria, the 1991 Constitution was
approved, prohibiting the extradition of Colombian citizens. The inclusion of
this rule was a guarantee of the highest legal level.
Named La Catedral (The Cathedral), this "prison", equipped with every
imaginable luxury, held only Escobar himself and his lieutenants and
collaborators. Claiming that the lack of security and the influence of U.S.
interests endangered his life, and that the guarantees offered by the
government were insufficient, Pablo Escobar decided, after thirteen months
of confinement, to leave the prison, which he did without too much difficulty
on July 22 1992
