YOUR SUBJECT’S OVERVIEW....

The students in the Senior High School, particularly those in the

Grade 12 that will take this subject, are in their latter part of their
adolescence and transitioning to their early adulthood. With this
subject “Personal Development,” we try to discover and deepen your
understanding on how adolescents, like you, are undergoing and also
little by little plot your desired direction for your future plans and career
later on. First thing here is we are going to explore the main features
of being an adolescent. Afterwards, we will try to examine how an
adolescent manages oneself in the face of situations with oneself and
of other people in varying degrees of relationship. Lastly, we will now
reevaluate your career pathways starting from your desired college
program up to your professional life.

Unit I, identifies and discusses what an adolescent is all about. It starts from the discussion
on the stage of adolescence where we can see the transformations that happened from the
earlier stage, which is childhood, up to the present. Also, this unit tackles the adolescent
through his responsibilities that one needs to adhere to conquer one’s life demands with
courage and reason.
Unit II talks about the aspects of one’s development as adolescents. This unit focuses on
how we think by looking at the function of our brain where it is always about us being well.
Also, stress is immutable in life and adolescents, like you, and it is a must that we need to
understand how it works and how can we overcome such. Lastly, emotions do play a big role
in adolescent life. We need to see how emotions do affect oneself as adolescents and how
can we manage such.

Unit III, we are now going out from the shell of ourselves to the bigger realm outside which
is to be with people. This unit dissects the adolescent about one’s family, peers, or close
group, and to one’s special someone. We will see the degree of difference that each
relationship has in regards to the adolescent and how an adolescent should maintain such
relationships.
Lastly, Unit IV shows how essential a career pathway is to an adolescent like you. In this
unit, we will now see what are the necessary things to consider when choosing your desired
path towards your future and also to measure how ready an adolescent is in the new stage
of one’s life as full-grown adults.

IV. Lesson Proper

Your parents have plans for you. They want you to become an Engineer someday. They
tell their friends about their plan for you. They praise your talents and skills and not recognizing
your weaknesses. Seeing them set the career they like best for you feels like, you, too is the
right thing to do.
Is this a good start towards growth? Is it someone else who should determine what you
will do in the future? What is the right thing to do?

According to Socrates, “An unexamined life is not worth living”

Do you agree/disagree with Socrates, why or why not? Why is it

important to know oneself first?

The answer to all of this can be funneled to just one thought — “Know
Yourself”. Who should know yourself best but you?
Knowing yourself means knowing your likes and dislikes; your strengths and weaknesses; interests
and talents. It means examining the world about you.
In examining one’s self, you are leaving the distractions and influences behind and
working towards what you want. As the word Self implies, it is the source of consciousness and
an agent responsible for an individual’s thoughts and actions.
In knowing yourself, you are building your identity which means that you are known
within the society with your beliefs, qualities, personality, looks, and/or expressions. You are
made by these as a person. You may choose who you are as a person, may it be a positive or
a destructive one. Positive in the sense that being who you are brings joy, inspiration, and good
influence to the people around you. In contrast, choosing a destructive one who brings trouble,
hopelessness, or fear serves us both with consequences.
In psychology, identity relates to body image, self-esteem, and individuality (See
Vocabulary at page 6 of this module for definition). In short, Self- Identity isthe recognition of
one's potential and qualities as an individual, especially concerning social context.

Building your identity is the key for you to know your way of life, to live and adapt to our
ever-changing society.

In your textbook, there are two developmental theorists who focused on self-identity
during period of adolescence, Erik Erikson and James Marcia (pages 18-20).

Erikson explained that during adolescence, one experiences

challenging times that may pose some struggles in building one’s identity.
He mentioned that there are two major crises in adolescence explained in
two situations:
In establishing one’s identity, there is an adolescence stage termed
as Identity vs Confusion. The ones who fall into identity are those who
establish and knew themselves well, if not, they will be into confusion which
means they are uncertain about themselves or they do not know what to
do. How does it happen?
CRISIS 1: This happens when they have minimal exposure or opportunities to socialize and
establish peer relations that restricts chances of discovering themselves because of limited
experience.
CRISIS 2: Another reason is too much conformity with peers which they always go along with
friends’ decisions and failed to recognize what they want, or they stop pursuing their own interest
that limits opportunity to experience things that allow them to know themselves.
These problems were called identity crisis, a sense that you do not know who you are, or
uncertain of yourself.

MODULE 1 - GRADE 12 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PAGE 8 OF 14 PAGES

James Marcia extended Erikson’s theory and identified key elements in

achieving a mature identity:
1. Crisis presents an opportunity to explore.
2. Commit and be faithful in your beliefs and values, as well as focus on
identified goals, plans, or chosen career.

As advised in your textbook, it is important to engage in personal searching, reflection or

personal interests, values or beliefs so that you can personally own your choices and learn to be
more responsible.

Another theory supporting self-identity is the concept of Nature vs Nurture which was first
coined in the mid 1800’s by the English Victorian polymath Francis Galton in discussion about
the influence of heredity (nature) and environment (nurture) on social advancement. This
paradigm is highlighted in the quote attributed to psychologist Donald Hebb who, when asked
‘Which, nature or nurture, contributes more to personality?’ answered by asking in response,
“Which contributes more to the area of a rectangle, its length or its width?”

Examine yourself and exit the rat race you are stuck in. Your life will eventually become
worthy enough with no regrets even at the death bed.

Now let us learn about the changes and transitions that an adolescent like you is
experiencing.

1. Physiological Changes
Physiological changes are considered as the internal
changes in your body. These are basically the changes that are
caused by sexual maturation where an adolescent like you are
able to reproduce. Alongside with your capability for
reproduction, there are also hormones that are produced to
entice the changes to your body ready for reproduction thus
having the next kind of change which is the physical changes.

2. Physical Changes
The physical transformations observed during
adolescence are, in most cases, the result of hormonal
changes as the teenager’s body is transformed from child
to adult. This phase, called puberty, starts between the
ages of 9 and 16 and usually ends between the ages of 18
and 22.

Physical changes observed in both girls and boys

include growth spurts, increased perspiration, acne
problems, and appearance of pubic and underarm hair.
Physical changes are considered as the external changes
in your body.

uploading of any part of this document in any form and in any means without the prior official written permission of SLC-SFLU is

MODULE 1 - GRADE 12 PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT PAGE 9 OF 14 PAGES

3. Psychological Changes
Adolescence is not only characterized by the
aforementioned common physical changes. Indeed, this stage
of life is full of emotional and psychological transformations that
are just as significant as physical ones. Teenagers start to
become aware and conscious about oneself because you are
already concerned with your body image. Alongside with that,
one is striving towards forming their identities and
independence. Also, we cannot get out of the fact that in this
period, you are experiencing dilemnas or paradoxes that
would boggle you which leads to confusion if left unseen.

This period is also one of the confusing periods of life

because there is a struggle between the desire for autonomy and the need to remain
dependent on his or her parents. Also, it is a dilemma of following what you want or the
want of others. It is also a time where you balance your roles as a son/daughter, sibling,
friend, classmate, lover, etc. This is really a challenging period in one’s life but succeeding
these challenges would make you be ready and determined for the next stages of life
that you will face later on.

(Please refer to pages 20-21, Personal Development book)

V. Generalization

Knowing yourself means understanding your strengths

and weaknesses, your passions and fears, your desires, and your
dreams. It means being aware of your eccentricities and
idiosyncrasies, your likes and dislikes, and your tolerances and
limitations.

Knowing yourself also means knowing your purpose in life.

VI. Assessments

Mini Task: “Symbol of Myself”

The instructions are indicated in your answer sheet, and the

rubrics will be incorporated into a separate sheet of this
module. This will be counted as your first Mini Task in the First
Quarter.

ANSWER SHEET #1

MODULE 1: I’ve Got To Be Me: Self-Discovery and Identity

AUGUST 25-SEPTEMBER 13, 2021

I. Preliminary Activity
(Good for 15 minutes)

“KOKOLOGY: GAME OF SELF-DISCOVERY”

Just to get you started in discovering yourself, let us have a random self-discovery game
from the book Kokology. Please review the 7 tips before playing / answering at page 6 of this
module.
There will be 3 games below. In every game, there is a situation where you should imagine
yourself into. These situations may be usual or unusual scenarios. Afterwhich, respond to the
questions below it. Write your answer on the line provided, or encircle the letter of your choice.
The interpretation of your answers will be saved in your respective flashdrive with the file name:
“PERDEV Module 1 Kokology Interpretation of Answers”, but make sure to answer the questions
first before reading the interpretations.

GAME 1: JUDGING BY ITS COVER

Think of what it would be like to be the best-selling pop star in the world, the darling of
the media and idol to millions. It’s not such an uncommon fantasy to entertain as you sing along
to the car radio or belt out hit after hit in the shower. You get a thrilling sense of satisfaction from
being able to move people through the power of song.
You are a new recording artist, and you’ve just finished cutting your debut CD. Now all
that remains is for you to decide on a cover design for the CD case. What type of jacket design
would you pick below. Encircle the letter of your choice below.

A. A soothing scene using imagery or photos taken from some exotic location.
B. A fun, cartoonish design or other playful image.
C. An abstract pattern without any obvious meaning, but one that makes people think.
D. A picture of yourself.

GAME 2: SOMETHING’S FISHY

When it comes to relaxing in the great outdoors, few activities have the perennial appeal
of fishing. Every weekend, no matter the weather, dedicated anglers set off for their favorite
spots, joined by curious first-timers in their pursuit of the day’s catch. Not many pastimes can
boast the number of confirmed addicts that fishing has.
You are out for a day of fishing when you get a strike. As you reel the fish up out of the
water, it thrashes on the line and smacks into you. What area of your body does the fish hit?

Answer: ______________________________________________

GAME 3: RETURNS POLICY

It can be hard to tell others how you really feel about them. Searching for just the right
word or gesture to express your true feelings is never easy, and maybe it’s never more difficult
that when the person you’re trying to address is someone you secretly love. For some, speaking
those three little words “I love you” takes more courage than facing the gravest physical threat.
You have decided to admit your true feelings to a person you’ve loved from a distance
for what seems like ages. You have brought a small gift to help show your sincerity and the depth
of your love, but when you finally take that leap and offer yourself, that person says, “I’m sorry,
but I can’t take this from you. I’m in love with someone else.”
Oops! Only time will heal your broken heart. The more immediate question is, What will
you do with that unwanted gift? Encircle your chosen letter below.
