1. Introduction
Over the years, reading culture is growing in popularity in tandem with the advancement of
human civilization, owing to its numerous benefits to our lives. However, reading habits have not
been paid much attention in Vietnam. Only 30% of the population reads frequently, and over a
quarter of the population does not read at all. Simultaneously, Vietnamese individuals spend
around one hour reading books, which is among the lowest in the world (Nguyen, 2019).
Therefore, to enhance the reading culture in Vietnam, we focus on inspiring people, especially the
young generation.

This report describes how the Girl Gang team collaborated with NuNu bookstore to run the “From
books to hearts'' campaign and the way people interact, engage with books through several
activities of the NuNu organization. Moreover, the purpose of this report is to gauge everyone's
interest in books, to show how our team raises their reading habits awareness through social
media as well as how we support children who do not have access to books. The necessity of our
project, its structure will be mentioned in the report in more detail. The final results of our project
showed that collaborating with NuNu bookshop has yielded great outcomes as people's
connection with the organization has increased steadily and we have more opportunities for
charity.

2. Background of the situation

a. Situation Analysis
Many individuals have grown up in a world where the Internet is always at their fingertips and
they can connect with others at the push of a button. They think that having a phone is having
everything, nothing is more convenient than a phone. Therefore, more and more people are
becoming glued to their smartphones and lose the habit of reading books which help us improve
knowledge as well as learn more new things. After surveying 50 students at the University of
Western Sydney, it is easy to see that a lot of students do not spend time on reading books and
the number of students who spend 1-2 hours a week said they just read books because of the
subject’s requirement in school.

b. Our Decision
Our team decided through this charity activity "From books to hearts" to introduce and bring a
very interesting and new world of books to motivate young people to get interested in reading by
interacting with people via a social networking platform - Facebook. Furthermore, we utilize the
proceeds from book sales to donate to the vaccine fund of the government.

3. Project Description
a. Organization Background
NuNu bookstore is a non-profit organization where old books are collected from benefactors and
resold to other book lovers at a loving and affordable price based on their residual value, such as
newness and book integrity. The whole profit of the campaign will be donated for social support
and charity activities. NuNu bookstore was founded on May 1st, 2020. Since then, the business
has operated offline and online through Facebook, Instagram, Tiktok, and its official sales
website.
 Core value:
- Create opportunities for readers to access a variety of books in the most economical form and
use profits to support social and charity works.
 Achievement:
- Attracted nearly 1,900 followers and more than 1,600 likes on the official Facebook page, more
than 2,300 followers on the official account on Instagram, and reached nearby 40 followers for
the official Tiktok account.
- After a year of operation, NuNu bookstore organized a trip to give gifts to students and raised
more than 19 million Vietnam dongs to support the Central region, Quy Tam Long Viet. Recently,
the business has deducted the proceeds from the sale of books and one-third of the price sold on
each Mloew - a designed tote bag with the logo on it to send to the Vaccines Fund for a total of 6
million Vietnam dongs.
 Problems of business:
- Low follower engagement for posts on social media platforms.
- The content of posts is not diverse and attracts many followers.
b. Our Solutions
After assessing the context and current situation of the business, our team decided to expand the
number of donated books by appealing to people in our areas and posting on social platforms.
"From books to hearts" - a new campaign with the same tagline was created by Girl Gang to
progress business promotion as our team members agreed on what it meant. By following this
slogan, our team is looking forward to seeing more kind-hearted people who have old books, are
willing to donate, and become our customers. The profits from our activities will contribute to the
national vaccine fund and poor households during the pandemic.

4. Project Deliverables
Key message of the project:
“From books to hearts”
NuNu is not only essentially a bookstore, but we want to spread our love and support to people
in difficult circumstances. In this time, we continue calling for donations for COVID-19 vaccine
fund which appears most importantly in today’s situation. In addition, “Hearts” also stands for the
spreading of inspiration about reading habits. We believe that books are a worthy treasure of
humanity, where we can acquire knowledge and nurture our souls.

5. Implementation and achievements

a. Searching for collaborator
At the beginning, each member suggested 1 organization which has a meaningful campaign to
deliver our message and spread positive energy to people during COVID-19 era. After discussing
carefully and contacting several organizations, we were successfully approved to collaborate with
NuNu bookstore. NuNu is an organization that inspired the reading culture and we thought that
this collaborator would tailor the project.

9
[GIRLGANG TEAM_WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY]

b. Collaboration Process
 Beginning week (20-25/7):
- Arrange project timeline (21/7): According to our discussion with NuNu, as they had fully planned
for their projects during July, it would be more efficient for us to start our project the following
month, when we were comfortable with the schedule.
- 20/7: Send the first 32 donated books in the early of the pandemic.
 Week 1 (2/8-8/8):
- Calling for donations for National COVID-19 vaccine fund (2/8): The funding form is sending a
message by syntax, then money is directly sent to the Vietnamese vaccine bank. Two hours after
running the charity, we summarized 155,000 Vietnam dongs donated from six first participants.
Unluckily, the fund was closed the following day since there was a lot of support from our fellow
countries. Although the amount of money is not quite significant, we fully appreciate all their
hearts as most of our followers are students. We have given six 15% vouchers to them when
purchasing books at NuNu.
- 1st post of reading awareness: History of book (⅝): We primarily presented the evolution of books
to give a comprehensive insight to take up reading habits.

Our team has fulfilled all the goals to help the organization tackle its problem of low interactions.
As listed in the proposal that the purpose of our collaboration was to have a 200 to 500 increase
in audience’s reactions on fanpage, our campaign has specifically approached 2,045 viewers and
included 467 interactions in total posts that nearly reach our target. Significantly, our mini game
engaged the huge attention of the organization’s audiences that was remarkably more than 95%
others of NuNu so far. As a result, there were 142 newcomers to the page, which meant more
people were interested in reading habits and chose NuNu bookstore as a charismatic place to
keep up with their hobbies.

[GIRLGANG TEAM_WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY]

6. Conclusion
The project "From Books to Hearts" is carried out with the aim of helping people become more
interested in reading, especially Generation Z. Moreover, this project also appeals to all people in
Vietnam to support the Vietnam Vaccine Fund during the country's difficult epidemic period. It
suggests an approach to people's reading consciousness through improving reading awareness,
reviewing and recommending books, creating mini games to improve reading ability and analyzing
information. At the end of this collaboration, we have completed the original plan and successfully
conveyed the message of reading to everyone, except for some unforeseen situations: social
distancing policy prevented us from accepting donations of books, the vaccine fund closed as soon
as we posted the appeal. When the COVID-19 pandemic ends, our expectation is to complete
what we have not done.
Key lessons learned
We know that raising people's reading awareness has been a difficult problem to solve. The loss
of interest in reading is due to the habit of using electronic devices, and it's become a habit that
is hard to quit. Therefore, to regain interest in books, we need to be more patient, spend time,
and create unique content. We have learned that when setting up a project there can be difficult
situations that we must encounter, for instance, contact support from organizations is denied,

20
[GIRLGANG TEAM_WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY]

the project does not receive attention, plans cannot be carried out because of unpredictable
factors. To scale up the project, it requires the support of larger organizations and adequate
funding.

11.(tiếng Wales) Cái ôm chặt, hành động yêu thương hoặc một nơi an toàn.
