Though the method of completing the squares can be applied to almost all
forms of quadratic equations, problem arises if the values of a, b, or c are large
numbers. In this case using Quadratic Formula is recommended.
−b ± √b 2−4 ac
The quadratic formula is given by x = . It is used to solve
2a
quadratic equations in the form ax 2 + bx + c = 0 by identifying the values of a, b, and
c, and substituting these values in the formula.
To solve the quadratic equations by quadratic formula, the following steps
must be followed.
Example 1: Find the solutions of the equation 2 x2 +7 x=−6 using the quadratic
formula.
1
Step 3: Substitute the values of a, b, and c in the quadratic formula.

Example 2: Find the roots of the equation 9 x 2−6 x=−1 using the quadratic
formula.
Step 1: Write the equation in standard form.
9 x 2−6 x=−1 → 9 x 2−6 x +1=0
Step 2: Determine the values of a, b and c.
9 x 2−6 x +1=0 → a=9 ; b=−6 ; c=1
Step 3: Substitute the values of a, b, and c in the quadratic formula.
