1 Decimal Numbers

This module focuses on decimals which include addition and subtraction of decimals
and mixed numbers and solving routine /non-routine problems that we usually
encounter in our daily lives. The exact value or amount of number should determine.
The used of points that separates the whole and decimal numbers were aligned before
doing the operations. The steps in solving routine and non-routine problems enable
them to analyze and understand how to get the correct answer and apply it in their
daily lives.

fish for ₱. 180.00. If she has ₱ 1575.00 how much left to spend for other needs of the
family?

What is It

The best way to apply the operations on decimals is through spending money.
Counting and value every single centavo that we spend. Addition and subtraction of
decimals are like adding and subtracting whole numbers, but you have to make it
sure that all the digits with the same place value are aligned .

Regroup the sum

124.60

+ 160.50 addends

180.00

P 465.10 sum

Decimals points are aligned

Mother spent ₱ 124.60, ₱160.50, and ₱ 180.00. You can get the sum of these given
numbers by aligning first the decimal point. Then add the digits in each column
starting from the right like of the whole numbers. Regroup on the next place value if
the answer is ten and above. Thus, you will get the sum of ₱ 465.10 after adding
the given numbers with decimal point.

Decimal points are aligned

Thus, the total expenses is ₱ 464.60 subtracted from her total money
₱ 1,575.00, the difference ₱1110.40 is the amount money, left, to buy other needs
of the family

In other, whole number added or subtracted to decimal numbers, insert zeros in


empty decimal place values (if needed) so that all of the numbers have the same
number of decimals. Align the decimals then proceed to addition as of whole

numbers, regroup if the answer is 10 above to the next value. Write the decimal point
where it is aligned.

Example 1.

45.0 +37.98 = 45.000 addends

+ 37.983

82.983 total sum

In Example number 1

• Write numbers with aligned decimal point. Add zero if needed to fill the
missing value.
• Start adding from your right to left.
➢ Zero thousandths added to 3 thousandths equals 3,
➢ 0 hundredths plus 8 hundredths equal 8
➢ 0 tenths added to 9 tenths equals 9,
➢ 5 plus 7 is equal to 12,
➢ regroup 1 ten to tens,
➢ 1 plus 4 plus 3 is equal to 8.
• Thus, you have a total sum of 82.983.(eighty-two and nine hundred eighty-
three thousandths)

34.90 - 12.246 = 34.920 subtrahend

-12.246 minuend

22.674 difference

In example number 2

• Aligned the decimal numbers, add zero to fill the missing value
• Proceed to subtraction as in whole numbers starting from the right to the left.
• Regroup the numbers from next number if the value of minuend is greater
than the subtrahend.
• Check the answer by adding the difference and minuend. Your answer should
be the same as of original subtrahend.

Step 1: Understand, give what is asked, the total number of minutes did she help
her mother doing household chores. Look for the given facts, there are different
household chores that Arlene did,30.45 minutes sweeps the floor, 10.35 minutes
washing the dishes and 5.75 minutes for watering the plants.

Step 2: Plan, which operation are you going to used, it asked for the total minutes of
helping household chores, therefore addition is the right operation.

Step 3: Solve, write the solution for the problem, how did you get the answer to the
question.
