Reflection Point
“As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart and body of our
patients, their families and ourselves. They may forget your name but they will never
forget how you made them feel” – Maya Angelou.
Having been drawn with concepts of medical and surgical nursing, how would you
anticipate your clinical exposure from which you can connect this inspirational quote.
The Care of Clients with Problem in Oxygenation has been a part of every student nurse’s life because we
provide nursing care to at risk and sick adult clients using the nursing process. As a practicing health care
provider, the experience that the student nurses like me have gained during the rotation has improved my
understanding about medical-surgical nursing specially on the field of caring of clients with problem in
oxygenation. Not only that I have implemented interventions but the feeling of being accepted as a health
care provider and being able to help in the improvement of others’ lives is very heartwarming and gave me
a sense of accomplishment.
One of the most rewarding feeling as a nurse is about making a difference in the lives of others and the
personal connection that we are able to make with patients. No matter how long it has been, a patient
remembers their nurse. They may or may not remember the nurse’s name, but they remember if they were
kind and compassionate.
Nurses have the ability to connect with the patients on such an intimate level. Even though they meet the
patients in very difficult circumstances for example when they face serious health challenges or injuries or
witnessing the moment of birth or the end of life, nurses can still get to know their patients very quickly and
have the opportunity to play an important role in their lives. As like what they said, sometimes it's the little
things that you do for the patient that make a difference. In nursing, you just have to follow your passion
and purpose and stay true to yourself. Always remember to be compassionate, have empathy and to give
the best care possible.
