With technology being more accessible and the prevalence of social media and digital

forums, comments, photos, posts, and content shared by individuals can often be viewed by

strangers as well as acquaintances (What is Cyberbullying). People can easily become a victim

of cyber bullying, or on the contrary, they can become a cyber bully themselves. It is very

common to see this occur because many online bullies find it easy to hide behind the computer

screen and say mean and negative things to other online users. Technology has made it easier to

connect with others and view content posted by complete strangers. Cyber bullying can be very

damaging to adolescents, teens, and even adults. It can lead to anxiety, depression, and even

The target population of cyber bullying is mainly adolescents and teenagers. There are

many instances when adults are involved in cyber bullying, whether they are the victim or the

victimizer. Sometimes, it is more prevalent to see adults bullying others online, but it has become

so commonplace that bullying has become a part of our everyday lives and it seems that more

people are accepting it. Although many adults are impacted by cyber bullying, it is important to

focus on how young adults are affected because they may not fully understand the effects that

bullying can have on them or others. The problem first needs to be addressed with young adults

because the results of cyber bullying may lead to greater consequences further down the line.

Many cyber bullies think that bullying others online is funny and entertaining, so they use

technology instead of approaching others face to face. They also believe that if they use fake

names, create fake profiles, or just because they are posting something online, they will not get

caught. In cyberbullying, the perpetrator is less likely to see any direct response from

the victim, which might reduce any inhibition of inflicting pain due to empathy at

seeing the victim’s distress. Despite the potential damage of cyber bullying, and although it

is less frequent than traditional bullying, it is still alarmingly common among adolescents and

teens. Research on cyber bullying is in an early stage. According to Cyber bullying statistics

from the i-SAFE foundation, over half of adolescents and teens have been bullied online, and

about the same number have engaged in cyber bullying. More than 1 in 3 young people

have experienced cyber threats online. Over 25 percent of adolescents and teens have been

bullied repeatedly through their cell phones or the Internet, and well over half of young people

do not tell their parents when cyber bullying occurs (Cyber Bullying Statistics, 2015).

Cyber bullying has been discussed in this course through the presentation of the four

lenses. Social science is the study of society and the relationships between people. As bullying in

general is becoming more common, the relationships between people seems to become more

distant. Humans behave in very different ways, and for some people, bullying others may be

their way to feel powerful and even funny. There can be psychological factors associated with

bullies. For the victims, it may cause many negative emotions, stress, and depression. For the

bullies, it may make the person feel better about themselves. Technology has made it easier to

bully others, and it seems as though it has driven people further apart. The second lens is related

to the natural sciences. It is the study of the physical world and includes technology. This can be

related to bullying because we study the relationship between people and technology. Cyber

bullying can harm the online reputations of everyone involved – not just the person being

bullied, but those doing the bullying or participating in it. History is the study of events that

occurred in the past, and technology makes it easier to analyze events that previously occurred.

Statistics can be collected regarding the data, and this can include information on cyber bullying.

It is very difficult to collect information on cyber bullying because there are so many instances of

it occurring, but researchers can get a better idea of how prevalent cyber bullying has become in

modern day society. Finally, humanities is the study of cultures around the world, and there are

many differences between each country and how the people who live there interact with

technology. There are some countries where technology is more popular and easily accessible,

and on the other hand, there are other countries where many of the residents have never even

used a computer of cellular device. Some people cannot live without technology, and others

would rather not use it.

Because cyberbullying can happen in different ways, examples based on real-life

experiences can provide a deeper understanding of the tactics typically used. Along with other

risk factors, bullying can increase the risk for suicide-related behaviors. Furthermore,

cyberbullying can be relentless, increasing the likelihood of anxiety and depression (What is

Cyberbullying). The rise in cyber bullying can cause serious threats to adolescents and teenagers,

and it is important to understand how children are cyber bullied so it can be easily recognized

and action can be taken. There needs to be an increase in awareness so that the risk of cyber

bullying can be minimized and further harm can be prevented.
