INFLUENCE OF NEEDS SATISFIERS, OCCUPATIONAL HAZARDS, AND WORK

ENVIRONMENT ON THE TEACHING COMPETENCIES OF PUBLIC

SECONDARY SCIENCE TEACHERS IN PINAMALAYAN EAST:
BASIS FOR ENHANCED HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
AND DEVELOPMENT PLAN

Statement of the Problem

1. What is the extent of needs satisfiers of public secondary science teachers in terms of:
1.1 physiological needs;
1.2 security needs;
1.3 social needs;
1.4 self-esteem needs; and
1.5 self-actualization needs?
2. What is the extent of occupational hazards experienced by public secondary science teachers
in terms of:
2.1 physical hazards;
2.2 emotional hazards;
2.3 social hazards; and
2.4 health hazards?
3. What is the status of working environment of public secondary science teachers in terms of:
3.1 working hours;
3.2 school culture;
3.3 career development;
3.4 social interactions with colleagues; and
3.5 relationship with superiors?
4. What is the level of teaching competencies of public secondary science teachers in terms of:
4.1 addressing learners’ diversity;
4.2 ensuring effective learning environment;
4.3 mastery of subject matter; and
4.4 use of assessment and evaluation?
5. Is there a significant relationship between the extent of need satisfiers and the level of teaching
competencies of public secondary science teachers in Pinamalayan East?
6. Is there a significant relationship between the extent of occupational hazards and the level of
teaching competencies of public secondary science teachers in Pinamalayan East?
7. Is there a significant relationship between the status of working environment and the level of
teaching competencies of public secondary science teachers in Pinamalayan East?
8. Based on the result of the study, what Hazard Identification and Development plan can be
proposed?

Enhanced Hazard Identification and Development Plan

Figure I. Hypothesized Relationship between Variables

Figure I present the independent and dependent variables of the study. As shown, there

are three independent variables in the study. The first independent variable is the extent of needs

satisfiers in terms of physiological needs, security needs, social needs, self-esteem needs and

self-actualization needs. The other independent variable is the extent of occupational hazards

which include the physical, emotional, social and health hazards. The last one is the status of

working environment which is evaluated in terms of working hours, school culture, career

development, social interactions with colleagues and relationship with superiors.

On the other hand, the dependent variable of the study is the level of teaching

competencies in terms of addressing learners’ diversity, ensuring effective learning environment,

mastery of subject matter and using assessment and evaluation.

The one headed arrow between the need satisfiers and teaching competencies, between

occupational hazards and teaching competencies and working environment and teaching

competencies show the hypothesized relationship between these paired variables. Finally, an

enhanced hazard identification and development plan will be developed based on the result of the

study.

work place, some of the assessment were adequate
