 AUGUSTINE’S SEARCH FOR GOD – FOR MEANING AND HAPPINESS

 What is spirituality and why is it important?
 There is an increased interest in spirituality because it deals with the
important questions: What is the meaning of life – if there is one?
 How should I live my life? What is true, what should I love and why?
 These are pressing questions today: are we happier? Life is externalized,
cultural relativism, no absolutes; define your own meaning, loneliness,
aggression, indifference. Lot of mental health problems.
 Christian spirituality: truth and love of God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
 Many different windows on Christianity – many ways of living Christ’s
teaching because the bible is too rich for us to live in its fullness: we have
limited capacity, have to make a choice of what we focus on. We are all
different – so will be attracted by different aspects of the Christian life:
action, contemplation, intellectual, social etc.
 Augustinian spirituality: the way he followed Christ, the focus he chose is an
attractive model for many people. What is that way?

Augustinian Spirituality

1. Augustine’s Spirituality developed as a religious life – He proceeded from

EXTERIOR to INTERIOR – from INTERIOR to SUPERIOR.
2. Augustine’s Spirituality is a spiritual conversion. It can never be understood apart
from his CONFESSIONS (Adam, David, Prodigal Son, St. Paul).
3. Augustinian Spirituality is the LIVING EXPERIENCE of a relationship with GOD and
with His PEOPLE. God is a personal-relating GOD. Our response of FAITH to a
relationship is spirituality.
4. Augustine’s Spirituality is rooted in the LIFE of the MIND and grows by the LOVE
of the HEART.
5. Augustinian Spirituality is that kind of personal life with GOD which Augustine had
so abundantly shared through his writings.
6. Augustinian Spirituality is the IDEAL of Christian life. The dominant
characteristics of Augustinian Spirituality are:
a. thirst for GOD
b. delight in searching for HIM
c. JOY in the TRUTH
d. willing submission to GOD’s sovereignty
e. commitment to contemplation
f. responsiveness to neighbor’s needs
g. UNITY with all in CHARITY

Like the Trinity, man’s life with God - is interior while being wholly relational.
8. Augustine developed his spirituality in an age of rapid change and his spirituality
is all the more viable today.
9. Hallmark of Augustinian Spirituality is centered on the Trinitarian God and
experienced in human existence.

a) it is centered on Christ who is encountered in Scripture
b) it is not an emphasis upon one aspect of Christianity
c) it is a participation in the Trinitarian life.
