Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight: Musicians

ational Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated from September 15th
through October 15th, this recognizes the culture, achievements,
contributions, and history of Hispanic Americans. The Spring Creek
Sun is showcasing a few influential musicians and the hallmark that they
have made in the music industry.
Jerry Garcia is one of the most famous
rock and roll musicians of all time as lead
singer and guitarist of The Grateful Dead.
He was born in San Francisco, California
on August 1, 1942. Garcia was also re-
nowned for his musical and technical
ability, particularly his ability to play a
variety of instruments and sustain long
improvisations with the Grateful Dead.
He passed away on August 9, 1995
from a heart attack.
Ricky Martin is a Latino pop singer, who
burst onto the music scene with his self-
titled English-language debut album. It
immediately shot up the charts. Martin is
no stranger in the music business, he was
a member of  Menudo, the Puerto Rican
boy band. He also had a short acting stint
on ABC’s General Hospital.
Rita Moreno was born Rosita Dolores
Alverio on December 11, 1931 in
Humacao, Puerto Rico. She is an actress,
dancer, and singer. Moreno first appeared
in film at the age of fourteen, in A Medal
for Benny  (1945). She played in several
movies (notably The King and I in 1956)
until her role as Anita in  West Side
Story  (1961) that brought her fame and
an Oscar as best supporting actress.
Placido Domingo was born on January
21, 1941 in Madrid, Spain. Placido’s
parents were Spanish opera singers in
Madrid, which contributed to his remark-
able tenor voice and musical abilities. At
eight years old, Placido began appearing
alongside his parents in performances. He
originally played the piano and enrolled in
school to become a conductor but decided
to focus on singing.
Suzanne Casale Melone  was born on
March 1, 1979 in Brooklyn, New York
and is better known as Lil Suzy. She is
an Italian-Puerto Rican American
 freestyle/pop singer. Lil Suzy is known
for her hits “Take Me in Your Arms”,
“Promise Me” and “Can’t Get You Out of
My Mind”. She is a singer and songwriter
who was very influential in freestyle
music in the early 1990s.
Judy Torres was born on June 13, 1968
in the Bronx. She is an American freestyle
music artist and dance-pop singer. Torres
scored club hits with songs such as
“Please Stay Tonight,” “Come into My
Arms,” “Love Story,” “I Love You, Will You
Love Me,” and “No Reason to Cry,” a love-
themed freestyle song.

Wilma Cosmé was born on January 16,
1966, in  San Juan, Puerto Rico. She is
known by her stage name Safire. She is
a  Puerto Rican  singer who grew up
in  East Harlem and began her singing
career as a session vocalist. Safire is one
of the few freestyle singers to cross over
into the pop world. She was the
first  Latina  to grace the cover of  Spin
Magazine. She has won numerous
awards including: six  New York Music
Awards, three Desi Awards,  ASCAP
award for writing “Thinking of You.” the
LGBT lifetime achievement Award.
Nayobe Catalina Gomez, is  known
professionally as Nayobe and was born on
December 18, 1967 in  Brooklyn,  New
York. She is an American singer of  Afro-
Cuban  heritage and freestyle dance-
pop musician. Her most successful singles
are: “Good Things Come to Those Who
Wait”, “Second Chance for Love” and “It’s
Too Late.” In 1985, Nayobe became the
first  Latin American  female to record
a freestyle song called “Please Don’t Go”.
Christina María Aguilera  was born on
December 18, 1980 in Staten Island, New
York, but was raised in Pennsylvania.
Her father was born in Ecuador, and her
mother is German, Irish, Welsh, and
Dutch. She is an American singer, song-
writer, actress, and television personality.
Often she is referred to as the “Voice of a
Generation”, and is credited for reviv-
ing teen pop in the late 1990s. Aguilera
has used her vocal ability to address
such topics as sexuality, feminism, and
domestic violence.
Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born
on February 2, 1977 and raised in
Barranquilla. She is a Colombian singer
and songwriter. She has been referred to
as the “Queen of Latin Music” and is
noted for her versatility in music.  She
made her recording debut at the age of
13. Shakira entered the English-langu-
age market with her fifth album,  which
sold over 13 million copies worldwide
with number-one singles “Whenever,
Wherever” and “Underneath Your
Clothes.”
Julio José Iglesias de la Cueva  was
born on September 23, 1943 in Madrid,
Spain. He is a Spanish singer, song-
writer and former professional footballer.
Iglesias is recognized as the most
commercially successful continental
European singer in the world and one of
the top  record sellers in music history,
having sold more than 100 million
records worldwide in 14 languages. In
April 2013, Iglesias was inducted into
the Latin Songwriters Hall of Fame.

at NYFW

New York Fashion Week (NYFW)
kicked-off earlier this month with
several in-person and virtual
runway shows—the bells of the
ball were all out to party in style.
Influencers, actors, artists, and other stars flocked to the shows donning
their very best attire while admiring returning and up-and-coming
designers for the fall shows.
On Sept 10th, Forever 21 took
NYFW by storm with its effortless style,
class, and pizzazz at the Ideal Glass
Studios on 9 West 8th Street. Prior to
the showcase, artist Maya Soufi
performed a musical number much to
the enjoyment of attendees. With the
click of dozens of flashes and upbeat
house music, models sashayed around
the crowd with the golden emblem of
Forever 21 emblazon in the back-
ground.
The show exhibited skintight faux
leather trousers paired with a
beautifully contrasting light blue
blouse with puffed sleeves and ruffles.

“Cry Macho” (PG-13) Even at 91 years old, Clint Eastwood is still
acting and directing, and his latest project’s plot feels slightly
familiar. If you enjoyed “Gran Torino,” you’ll probably like “Cry
Macho.” Eastwood plays a grizzled former rodeo star who finds
himself in the extended company of a teenage boy who’s struggling
to deal with life and growing up. During their time together,
Eastwood teaches the boy how to be a decent man. It’s a role
Eastwood plays well. The film will be dual released in theaters and
on streaming, but only available for 31 days from its release on
Sept. 17, so get crackin’. (HBOMax)
“The Harper House” (NR) A new animated series geared toward
adults, “The Harper House” attempts to find the funny in housing

Waist high skirts and pants were complemented by thin strappy tops,
giving both a clubbing appeal that could be dressed down for early
morning work meetings. Satin dresses and tank tops were flashbacks from
the early 2000s, but with a fresh new appeal when paired with wide legged
business pants and strappy heels.
What stood out most about the show is that each outfit exemplified the
inner urban fashionista of many New Yorkers, and while other runways
exhibit over-the-top gowns, Forever 21 provided examples of clothing that
could worn every day or for special occasions. Outfits that can be altered
in a New York minute.
The only downside about the show was the lack of diversity when it
comes to plus-sized options and men’s clothing. Forever 21 is such a
versatile brand that provides fashionable options for all; however, this
amazing feature was not capitalized at the show.
Modeling on the Forever 21 runway was former WWE superstar,
Danielle Moinet, Miss El Salvador, Vanessa Velasquez, former Miss
Poland, Caroline Derpienski, Maxim Model, Rachel Vallori and several
influencers.

a small Arkansas town into a dilapidated Victorian house on the
poor side when mom Debbie loses her job. Sounds fun so far, right?
Trust me, it is. Debbie is not your typical mother hen; she’s a can-
do, make-it-happen feminist type, while her husband, Todd, is the
mellow stay-at-home dad to their twin kids, who are also opposites
of each other. The mismatched personalities are exaggerated, but
that’s what makes it enjoyable. (Paramount+)
“My Heroes Were Cowboys” (PG) Few people get the chance to
turn their childhood dreams into their life’s work. Horse trainer
Robin Wiltshire spent his troubled youth escaping through the
fantasy of Western movies. After competing in rodeos, the Wyoming
resident got to train the iconic Budweiser Clydesdales for their TV
commercials. His ability to connect and communicate with these
giants led to a longstanding career in film production animal
training. But as this short documentary shows, for Wiltshire it’s
more than a job, it’s the saving grace of his life. (Netflix)
“Everybody’s Talking About Jamie” (PG-13) Really, they are! This
Amazon original musical movie is a little bit “Glee,” a little bit “La
Cage aux Folles,” and a whole lot of flash. An adaptation of the stage
show of the same name, it tells the story of 16-year-old Jamie New,
a British teenager who dreams of becoming a drag queen.
Supported by his mum and his best friend (but not by his father),
Jamie enlists the help of a local drag queen to mentor his dream.
It’s a fun, energetic flick inspired by true events. (Prime Video)
“Backyard Blowout” (NR) Every good reality competition show
deserves a kid version (see the success of “Top Chef Junior”). What
kids might lack in experience or training, they make up for with
their enthusiasm and creativity. This original series starts with
parents ready and willing to renovate their own backyards; the twist
is that they must use plans drawn up by their own children. As
expected, the kids think big because they have yet to learn the
meaning of the word budget ... or city codes ... or even safety. But
it’s all in fun, and the end results are a great bonding experience for
the families. (Peacock)

It’s Time to Head Back to School

fter 18 months, New York City Public Schools resumed full time,
in-person classes on Sept. 13th. Hundreds of children flocked to
their schools in Spring Creek Towers, donning crisp uniforms
and book bags, ready to start the year off with a semblance of
normalcy.

How local school welcomed their new students:

The Starrett Early Learning Center (SELC) began their day making
sure all students had their temperatures taken and wearing their
masks. After creating name tags for each of the children, they engaged
in fun activities, earned stickers for cleaning up, showed off their dance
moves, and enjoyed a snack with milk.
Abe Stark Primary School (PS) 346 kicked off their first day with a
Homecoming party featuring a live DJ, 360 photobooth, and balloons.
Children posed with parents for first day photos of the 2021 school
term, said good bye to their families, and secured their face masks as
they set off to start a full day of in-person lessons.
Just outside of Frederick Douglass Academy (FDA) VIII a pannist
performed Jamaican rhythmic sounds from steel pans while teachers
waved cheerleader pom poms chanting, “Welcome back!” The middle
schoolers smiled, gave their instructors high-fives, and excitedly
greeted friends, many of whom they have not seen for several months.
Wearing bright blue t-shirts with the words “Together toward
excellence 2021-2022 364 Falcons Homecoming,” the staff at Gateway
Intermediate School (IS) 364 gave students a roaring welcome as they

base, found on Drought. gov,
reports that as of August 31,
2021, 39 percent of the U.S. is in
drought, with 30 states experi-
encing Moderate Drought or
worse. The USDM uses a five-
category system to classify
drought severity, from Abnor-
mally Dry to Exceptional
Drought. The percent area of the
western U.S. in extreme to
exceptional drought peaked at
59.5 percent on July 20, 2021,
while the percent in moderate to
exceptional drought peaked at
90.3 percent on July 27, 2021.
This value exceeded the
previous peak in the 21-year
USDM record that occurred in
August and September of 2003.
These significant drought
conditions have dropped several
bodies of water in the Western
United States to record-breaking
lows. On July 23, 2021, the
Great Salt Lake in Utah, one of
the largest bodies of water in the
U.S., reached its lowest water
level since the U.S. Geological

Technology Gap
for Older Adults
Matters

pandemic brought with it a rapid
acceleration of telehealth as
people looked for ways to access
care safely. While technology kept
many in the United States con-
nected to care and loved ones,
many low-income older adults
were left behind by the sudden
need to understand and access
technology and internet services.
However, among those who
could stand to benefit the most
from these services are 22 million
older adults (ages 65 and above)
in the United States who don’t
have broadband access at home.
What’s more, older adults (ages
62 and above) with an income
below $25,000 are 10 times more
likely to be offline at home. Many
older adults lack the technological
literacy needed to leverage digital
resources for health and social
support.
New efforts are helping to
address these inequities. CITRIS
Health, an organization dedicated
to advancing the well-being of
older adults and family caregivers
with enabling technology, recently
launched “Lighthouse for Older
Adults.” This project is offering
one-on-one training, in-language
support and peer-based technical
support to equip older adult
residents of affordable housing
communities with high-speed
broadband access, user-friendly
devices and digital literacy train-
ing.
Following an initial pilot, par-
ticipants reported both an in-
crease in device usage as well as
confidence in using their devices.
Technology helped to connect
them to loved ones they were
reducing social isolation and
loneliness.
When asked about their favorite
part of using a Google device, one
participant stated, “Being able to
connect visually with family and
friends. And visually means a lot.”
Those at the helm of the project
say they hope its success will
serve as a model for other such
programs.
“Older adults have so much to
gain from the connections and
health care opportunities avail-
able with internet access and a
basic understanding of tech-
nology,” says CITRIS Health
director and Lighthouse project
lead David Lindeman. “We’re
eager to see this program repli-
cated to improve equity in
telehealth.”
The COVID-19 pandemic has
made it clear that technology
literacy and access are more
crucial for older adults than ever
before. When it comes to improv-
ing the health and well-being of
communities, addressing this gap
is essential.

I am an 83-year-old female
with bladder problems. I get up
two or three times a night and
usually make it to the bathroom.
I thought it would be good to see
a doctor in case the problem got
worse. An operation was men-
tioned, which I am not interested
in, so they gave me a pessary,
which has been good and bad.
It is comfortable and I don’t
have to use the bathroom as
often, but now I don’t get
bathroom warnings and don’t
always make it to the bathroom.
I also leak urine with coughs and
sneezes, which didn’t happen
before. Now the doctor wants me
to use Imvexxy inserts. After
reading the side effects, I’m not
sure that’s a good thing to do.
What are your thoughts: Is the
Imvexxy necessary? The side
effects really scare me.
Dr. Roach says: You have symp-
toms of both urge incontinence (the
sensation of needing to get to the
bathroom right away to avoid an
accident) and stress incontinence
(losing urine with abdominal pres-
sure, such as cough or sneeze). It is
possible that you have two separate
problems. However, loss of estrogen
can cause the lining of the vagina
and vulva to thin. This includes the
urethra, which provides conscious
control over urinary flow. It needs
estrogen to close optimally, and
older women often have stress or
urge incontinence (or both, which is
called mixed) due to lack of
estrogen.
Imvexxy (estradiol) is a low-dose
estrogen preparation inserted in the
vagina, usually daily for two weeks
then twice weekly thereafter. It is a
very reasonable choice for women
with symptoms of urge or stress
incontinence and who have findings

using estradiol at greater frequency
than in the placebo group).

noid hemorrhages (SAHs) — he
died immediately, and her mot-

which she suffered delusions.
Should my wife receive special
monitoring? She has always had
migraines, which have for the
most part been controlled by
medicine, but as we get into our
older years (70s), I wonder if we
should pay more attention to the
possibility of an SAH, and what
might that entail.
Dr. Roach says: Most subara-
chnoid hemorrhages, a life-threa-
tening bleed into the head from a
ruptured aneurysm, are spon-
taneous events unrelated to gene-
tics. However, they sometimes
come related to a genetic condition,
such as Ehlers-Danlos syndrome
and polycystic kidney disease. Even
when they are not associated with a
known condition, people with a
strong family history for SAH are at
increased risk for one themselves.
Someone with one first-degree
relative (like your wife’s mother, in
her case) has about a 1% chance of
having a SAH in the next 10 years.
Someone with two first degree
relatives has a 7% chance. Your
wife would be in between, with one
first-degree and one second-degree
relative (her grandfather).
There is no consensus on whe-
her she should be screened (with a
CT- or MRI-based angiogram scan),
but she should discuss it with her
doctor, or see an expert, such as a
neurosurgeon.
Dr. Roach regrets that he is
unable to answer individual ques-
tions but will incorporate them in
the column whenever possible.

and women switch from open to
closed shoe styles, the transition
can be painful.
According to Dr. Thanh Dinh,
DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle
surgeon and president of the
American College of Foot and Ankle
Surgeons (ACFAS) two of the most
common types of pain women feel
in their feet in autumn come from
bunions and hammertoes.
The ACFAS offers the following
insights into treating these condi-
tions and easing associated pain:
Understanding Bunions
A common myth is that tight-
fitting or narrow shoes cause
bunions. The truth is, bunions are
genetic. However, symptoms occur
most often when wearing high heels
or other styles that crowd the toes.
“A bunion is a change in the bony
framework of the front part of the
foot and is most often caused by an
inherited faulty mechanical struct-
ure of the foot,” Dr. Dinh explains.
“When the big toe leans towards the
second toe, rather than pointing
straight ahead, it throws the bones
out of alignment and produces the
all-too-familiar, bunion bump.”
Pain from bunions most often
occurs along the side of the foot
near the big toe. Women sometimes
describe it as a throbbing that
continues even after taking off their
shoes and putting up their feet. The
site of the bunion can also be
inflamed or red and can feel numb
or have a burning sensation.
Demystifying Hammertoes
“A hammertoe is a ‘bending’ or
contracture deformity of one or
both joints of a toe,” Dr. Dinh says.
“The abnormal bending puts
pressure on the toe when wearing

Back-to-School Shoe Shopping
Tips for Healthy Feet
(StatePoint) The start of a new school year brings many “to dos,”
including back-to-school shoe shopping. It’s important to find the right
shoes for your child at different stages in their lives. Foot and ankle
surgeons, often referred to as foot physicians or podiatrists, recommend
shopping wisely for the proper shoes to help minimize foot problems
caused by poorly-fitting shoes and help you address any foot issues your
child may have.
Use these tips from the foot and ankle surgeons of the American
College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) in your quest for school
shoes for your children.

1. Shoes should fit. Your child’s feet can grow up to two sizes in six
months, so account for growth when shopping. This doesn’t mean you
should buy shoes that are too big — oversized shoes can cause the foot
to slide forward, putting excessive pressure on the toes.
“A good fit is about a finger’s width from the end of the shoe to the tip
of the big toe,” says Dr. Brett Sachs, DPM, FACFAS, a foot and ankle
surgeon and Fellow Member of ACFAS.
Dr. Sachs warns that tight shoes can cause blisters, corns and
calluses on your child’s toes, blisters on the back of their heels, or worse,
ingrown nails, which can become infected. Signs of infection from
ingrown nails include pain, redness or fluid draining from the area. If
you notice any of these symptoms, schedule an appointment with a foot
and ankle surgeon, who can perform a simple, safe in-office procedure
to remove the nail.

2. Shoes wear out. Shoes lose shock absorption over time, so inspect
new and old shoes for proper cushioning and arch support. Foot and
ankle surgeons caution that worn-out shoes elevate the risk for heel
pain, Achilles tendonitis and even ankle sprains and stress fractures.
Replace any shoes with wear and tear around the edges of the sole.
When buying shoes, check to see that the toe box flexes easily and the
shoe doesn’t bend in the middle of the sole.

3. Children with flat feet. Children with flat feet need shoes with a wide
toe box, maximum arch support and shock absorption. The best options
are oxford, lace-up shoes that have enough depth for an orthotic insert,
if necessary.

4. Children who play sports. Athletic shoes can wear down and become
uneven on the bottom, causing the ankle to tilt because the foot can’t lie You good?
flat. If your child plays sports, use the start of the season to acquire new
shoes designed for the sport. For example, don’t mix baseball cleats with
football shoes.
5. Pay attention. While many pediatric foot problems resolve
themselves with growth, there are clear signs that tell parents when
children need medical help. Common pediatric foot problems can range
from pediatric flat foot, toe walking, in-toeing and flat or high arches to
tarsal coalitions (abnormal connection between the tarsal bones in the
back of the foot) and extra bone growth. Many of these conditions share
common signs:

• Pain, swelling and redness that doesn’t subside

• Development of thick calluses in one area of the foot
• Problems with the way your child walks
• Shins or thighbones that appear to turn inward
• Ankles that are weak or easily give out

“Bring up any concerns or symptoms at your child’s routine physical.

Foot and ankle surgeons and your child’s pediatricians can work
together to help ensure these conditions don’t affect your child’s overall
growth and development,” says Dr. Sachs.

Summer may be coming to an
end, but in much of the country
the weather is still warm enough
to appreciate the refreshing zing
of citrus and the ease of a no-
bake dessert. So, before we move
on to pumpkin spice everything,
let’s enjoy the sweet, tart flavor of
lemon cheesecake once more.
This technique has been
around forever so I can’t take
credit for creating this recipe. I
first recall seeing it made by
Martha Stewart, so I’ll credit her
for the inspiration, made more
frugal by yours truly.
Lemon cheesecake is the
perfect finale to so many meals.
Even though it’s assertively
sweetened, it’s not cloyingly sweet
because of the tart lemon. But
make no mistake, this cheesecake
is sweet, rich and indulgent. I
recommend small slices and
letting people come back for
more.
To make this economical, store-
brand graham crackers, cream
cheese and sweetened condensed
milk are perfectly fine for this

are faded. I think the jar is bisque. Did McCoy ever make a bisque

A: McCoy made “Mammy” or “Aunt Jemima” cookie jars like yours from
1944 to 1957. Some were plain white, and some had trim in other
colors. Thousands of cookie jars like yours were made, and they also
have been reproduced. The original jars were painted after firing and
colors are usually faded or have flaked off. Colors on reproduction jars
were glazed and then fired, so they remain bright. Value is about $150
if original.

The DCA has established a new process on its website (nyc.gov/talkmoney) to enable
new and return clients to schedule phone sessions. We are eager to provide services to
all clients in this way, and we know given the financial hardships that have already been
felt, our services will be increasingly important.
We will also be offering webinars on topics like Student Loans, How to Respond to
Market Changes, How to Borrow from Your Retirement Savings.
