Assignment 3 – Video Game Analysis

The game I chose to play for this game analysis is the video game Nazi
Zombies (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sniper_Elite_V2#Nazi_Zombie_Army) .
While playing this game I noticed at least four out of the eight MDA framework
aesthetics, which were Fantasy, Narrative, Challenge, and Discovery.
The first emotional aesthetic that I noticed when I began playing the
game was that the game has an imaginary world where in this world, a disease
has overcome the land and has turned most of the population in zombie like
people. Another aspect of the Fantasy aesthetic I found was that there is also
“wizard” like characters in the
game that have special powers to
overtake the world. The next
emotional aesthetic I found while

m
er as
playing this video game was that
there was a narrative that kept me, as

co
eH w
the player wanting to come back
and continue playing it.

o.
Throughout the game you go
rs e
ou urc
through different levels and try to
save the presidents daughter from a
tower (this is the level I got to play.)
o

This story was where the next

aC s

aesthetic comes in which was

vi y re

challenge. The challenge of the

game is to retrieve the girl from the
danger of the zombies and get her
ed d

home safe. Some of the obstacles in

ar stu

the game were to try and complete

these different challenges within
each level and try to figure out how to pass each level to reach the goal. Some
examples were trying to cross the river, or to kill the giant without getting killed
is

first. The kept the game exciting because you weren’t exactly sure what was
Th

going to come next that you would have to get past in order to get to the next
level. The last aesthetic that I found while playing this video game was
discovery. Along with the different challenges and because there is a fantasy
sh

world, the game contained the urge to explore around this game’s world and
explore each level to see what you could find. Some different things you had to
explore for was different ammo for different guns you could use to kill the
zombies, or specific special items like eggs or coins etc. that would help you in
different levels when you were in trouble.

With all of these

aesthetics that I found
throughout the game I
found emotionally I felt
excited, yet timid while
playing the game. It was
almost a sense of being a
little scared of what was
going to pop out next and
attack me while playing
the game. The details of
the game also gave me a
sense of mystery and
made me want to explore the game further to see what I could find. Also while playing
this game I would definitely compare

m
it to the computer game MYST in the

er as
fact of how I felt while playing it. I

co
always found the game MYST to

eH w
freak me out while playing it, yet

o.
have enough challenges and mystery
rs e
where I wanted to play even though I
ou urc
was timid while playing. They are
also comparable because they both
have a narrative story line
o

throughout the game that also make

aC s

you want to keep coming back and

vi y re

playing the game and complete each

of the levels. Both games involve
missions with specific objectives
however in Nazi Zombies I found
ed d

that it required players to fight their

ar stu

way through levels whereas in MYST

its trying to solve puzzle like
challenges. They are different in
is

comparisons because in Nazi

Zombies there is also more “checkpoints break up each campaign with safe houses,
Th

allowing players to stock up on weapons and ammunition” and there is basically one
ending of the story of the game. In MYST, it has clues that can be found in each of these
levels to help to reveal the back-story of the game's characters sand the game has
sh

several endings, depending on the course of action the player takes”
