Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Introduction
A survey of the Quran suggests that the ProphetSAW was not only the Last Prophet (khatam-
un-nabiyeen)a, who like many other ProphetsAS was sent to give glad tidings (basheer) to those
who accepted the revelation sent to him by AllahST and to warn (nadheer) those who rejected
the revelation,b he was also Mercy to the Mankind (rahmat-ul-lil-‘alameen), was endowed
with the best character (kholoq-in-‘adheem),c and was sent as a teacher (mo’allim) and
sanctifier (yozakkehim.d As shown in the Appendix, scholar has counted many other
attributes of the ProphetSAW. The focus of this paper is about his wisdom.e Though the Quran
itself is a book of wisdom (hikmah), which are all revelations from AllahST , the focus of the
author in this paper is to enumerate those statements of the ProphetSAW which reflects his
personal wisdom. Though his whole military campaign and diplomacy was a result of his
wisdom, the focus here will be health sciences, safety, and social sciences.
Discussion
Wisdom ‘is the ability to think and act using knowledge, experience, understanding, common
sense and insight. It is associated with attributes such as unbiased judgment, compassion,
experiential self-knowledge, self-transcendence and non-attachment, and virtues such as
ethics and benevolence.’1 The ProphetSAW has made many statements or given advice which
fall in this category. The following are some of his statements which fall under these
categories:

a
033.040. Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but (he is) the Messenger of Allah, and the Seal
of the Prophets (khatam-un-nabiyeen): and Allah has full knowledge of all things.
b
034.028. We have not sent thee but as a universal (Messenger) to men, giving them glad tidings, and
warning them (against sin), but most men understand not.
048.008. We have truly sent thee as a witness (shahid), as a bringer of Glad Tidings (mobashir), and as a
Warner (nadheer):
c
068.001. Nun. By the Pen and the (Record) which (men) write,- 2. Thou art not, by the Grace of thy Lord,
mad or possessed. 3. Nay, verily for thee is a Reward unfailing: 4. And thou (standest) on an exalted standard
of character (kholoq-in-‘azeem).
033.021. Ye have indeed in the Messenger of Allah a beautiful pattern (of conduct) for any one whose hope
is in Allah and the Final Day, and who engages much in the Praise of Allah.
d
062.002. It is He Who has sent amongst the Unlettered an apostle from among themselves, to rehearse to
them His Signs, to sanctify them (yozukkihim) , and to instruct (yo’allim) them in Scripture and Wisdom
(hikmah),- although they had been, before, in manifest error;-
e
002.129. (Ibraheem and Ismaeel said): "Our Lord! send amongst them an Messenger of their own, who
shall rehearse Thy Signs to them and instruct them in scripture and wisdom, and sanctify them: For Thou
art the Exalted in Might, the Wise."
003.164. Allah did confer a great favour on the believers when He sent among them an apostle from among
themselves, rehearsing unto them the Signs of Allah, sanctifying them, and instructing them in Scripture
and Wisdom, while, before that, they had been in manifest error.

Health Science
Cleanliness:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice2:

• “The key to the prayer (salah) is cleanliness, its beginning is takbir (saying Allahu
Akbar) and its ending is salam (salutation).”
• “Islam is clean. Therefore, you should keep yourselves clean, too. Only the clean
people can enter Paradise.”
• “Cleanliness is the half of belief.”
• “Cleanliness is from belief (its perfection and light).”

Wisdom:
According to Psychologist Haidt, “There’s a two-way street between our bodies and our
righteous minds. Immorality makes us feel physically dirty, and cleansing ourselves can
sometimes make us more concerned about guarding our moral purity.”3 In an experiment at
Cornell University, when people were asked about their political attitude. Those standing
next to a hand sanitizer dispenser became temporality more conservative.4

Use of Perfume:
The ProphetSAW was known to be a heavy user of perfume. It was highlighted, in many hadiths,
his love for fragrance and good scent like musk, ‘ud and ambergris. He had a vessel from
which he perfumed himself, and it is said that it was a mixed perfume combined from several
materials. If he would pass by a street in Mediana, people would say, “The Prophet passed by
from here.”. He said: "The best perfume is musk."5

Wisdom:
The olfactory nerve carries signals about odor to the part of brain that processes information
to guide the animal towards the right food. But in humans it also guides our taste in people.
It gets more active when we see something more fishy, particularly something disgusting.
People make harsher judgement when they are breathing in foul air. “When we are trying to
decide what we think about something, we look inward, at how we are feeling. If I feel good,
I must like it, and if I’m feeling anything unpleasant,, that must mean I don’t like it.”6 The
ProphetSAW must have known that having a pleasant smell will have a positive effect on people
around him.

Frequent Hand Washing:

The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
ProphetSAW emphasized on washing hands before eating, after finishing the meal, before
sleeping, after waking up. After every task, our ProphetSAW recommended to wash hands,
regularly.
Abu HurairaRA narrated, “When one of you awakens from sleep, do not let him dip his hands into
the vessel until he washes them three times. Verily, he does not know where his hand spent the
night.”7

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

SalmanRA said: “I read in the Torah that the blessing of food is in Wudu’ before it. I mentioned
that to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he said: “The blessing of food is in
the Wudu before it and after it.”8 Wudu here is referring to washing the hands.9
Wisdom:
During a day’s activity, we touch things we find in our way e.g. public doorknobs, our cell
phones, and moist kitchen towels. To a naked eye these may look clean, but they may contain
more viruses and bacteria than a clean toilet seat, which typically houses just 50 bacteria per
square inch. These bacteria can cause diarrhea and respiratory diseases. With this bacteria
infected hands we touch our face and mouth. A 2008 study found that office workers working
alone touched their faces an average of 16 times per hour. Another study discovered that
medical students touched their faces 23 times per hour. Almost half of the face touches
involved the mouth, nose, or eyes, which are the easiest pathways for viruses and bacteria to
enter our bodies. Even medical professionals were found to touch their faces an average of
19 times in 2 hours.10 Researchers estimate that better hand washing could cut diarrhea
death rates in half and the risk of developing a respiratory infection by 16%.11
Though most of the religious traditions have recommended cleanliness via ritual hand
washing for thousands of years, it was in 1846 that health care professionals found a link
between good hand hygiene and lower infection rates. Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, known as the
father of hand hygiene, noticed that when doctors and medical students handled cadavers
before touching patients in the maternity ward, more mothers developed fevers and even
died. He developed a theory that those performing autopsies got ‘cadaverous particles’ on
their hands, which they then carried from the autopsy room into the maternity ward.
Midwives did not conduct surgery or autopsies, so they were not exposed to these particles.
He instituted an unpopular chlorine-washing rule and saw the death rates tumble.12
A few years later, the famous nurse Florence Nightingale initiated hand-washing rules and
other hygiene measures in the British hospital where she worked. Death rates there dropped
by two-thirds, providing some of the first hard evidence that hand hygiene saves lives.13
In recent years, especially after the outbreak of COVID-19, handwashing with soap and other
forms of hand hygiene have been gaining recognition as a cost-effective, essential tool for
achieving good health and nutrition.14
Dua for Entering Toilette:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
The ProphetSAW has recommended an especial dua when entering the toilette:
“Allahumma 'innee 'a'oodho bika minal-khubthi walkhabaa'ith.” [Bukhari (1/45),
Muslim (1/283)].
This dua has been translated in many ways e.g.:
O Allah, I seek protection in You from the male and female unclean spirits.15
Allah, I seek refuge with you from all evil and evil doers.16
O Allah, I seek protection in You from male and female jinns.17
O Allah, I ask for your protection from satans and jinns, male and female.18
It should, however, be noted that the ProphetSAW used the word ‘khobothay’ and
‘khaba’aythay’. Had he meant satan, he would certainly have used shayateen, but he did not.
The word ‘khabotha’ means to be bad, to be wicked, evil, malicious, vicious, malignant.19 The

term ‘khubuth’ is the plural of ‘khabeeth’, which means bad, evil, wicked, malicious, vicious,
spiteful, noxious, injurious, harmful, malignant (disease), offensive, repulsive, nauseating,
disgusting (odor).20 ‘Khabeeth’ is the opposite of ‘tayyeb’. The Quran has always contrasted
‘Khabeeth’ with ‘tayyeb’ f. They are the opposite of each other. ‘Tayyeb’ means to be good,

f
007.058. From the land that is clean and good (at-tayyebo), by the will of its Cherisher, springs up produce,
(rich) after its kind: but from the land that is bad (khabotha), springs up nothing but that which is niggardly:
thus do we explain the signs by various (symbols) to those who are grateful.
002.267. O ye who believe! Give of the good things (tayyebat) which ye have (honourably) earned, and of
the fruits of the earth which We have produced for you, and do not even aim at getting anything which is
bad (al-khabeeth), in order that out of it ye may give away something, when ye yourselves would not receive
it except with closed eyes. And know that Allah is Free of all wants, and worthy of all praise.
003.179. Allah will not leave the believers in the state in which ye are now, until He separates what is evil
(al-khabeeth) from what is good (at-tayyeb) nor will He disclose to you the secrets of the Unseen. But He
chooses of His Messenger. (For the purpose) whom He pleases. So believe in Allah. And His apostles: And if
ye believe and do right, ye have a reward without measure.
004.002. To orphans restore their property (When they reach their age), nor substitute (your) worthless
things (al-khabeeth) for (their) good ones (at-tayyeb); and devour not their substance (by mixing it up) with
your own. For this is indeed a great sin.
005.100. Say: "Not equal are things that are bad (al-khabeeth) and things that are good (at-tayyeb), even
though the abundance of the bad (al-khabeeth) may dazzle thee; so fear Allah, O ye that understand; that
(so) ye may prosper."
008.036. The Unbelievers spend their wealth to hinder (man) from the path of Allah, and so will they
continue to spend; but in the end they will have (only) regrets and sighs; at length they will be overcome:
and the Unbelievers will be gathered together to Hell;- 037. In order that Allah may separate the impure
(al-khabeeth) from the pure (at-tayyeb), put the impure, one on another, heap them together, and cast
them into Hell. They will be the ones to have lost.
024.026. Women impure (al-khabeethato) are for men impure (lil-khabeetheena), and men impure (al-
khabeethoona) for women impure (lil-khabeethatay) and women of purity (at-tayyebato) are for men of
purity (lit-tayyebeena) , and men of purity (at-tayyeboona) are for women of purity (lit-tayyeba-tay): these
are not affected by what people say: for them there is forgiveness, and a provision honourable.
014.024. Seest thou not how Allah sets forth a parable? - A goodly word (tayyebatan) like a goodly tree
(tayyebatin), whose root is firmly fixed, and its branches (reach) to the heavens,- of its Lord. So Allah sets
forth parables for men, in order that they may receive admonition. 25. It brings forth its fruit at all times,
by the leave of its Lord. So Allah sets forth parables for men, in order that they may receive admonition. 26.
And the parable of an evil Word (khabeethatin) is that of an evil tree (khabeethatay): It is torn up by the
root from the surface of the earth: it has no stability. 27. Allah will establish in strength those who believe,
with the word that stands firm, in this world and in the Hereafter; but Allah will leave, to stray, those who
do wrong: Allah doeth what He willeth.
007.157. "Those who follow the apostle, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find mentioned in their own
(scriptures),- in the law and the Gospel;- for he commands them what is just and forbids them what is evil;
he allows them as lawful what is good (and pure) (at-tayyebat) and prohibits them from what is bad (and
impure) (al-khaba-eth); He releases them from their heavy burdens and from the yokes that are upon them.
So it is those who believe in him, honour him, help him, and follow the light which is sent down with him,-
it is they who will prosper."
021.074. And to Lut, too, We gave Judgment and Knowledge, and We saved him from the town which
practised abominations (al-khaba-eth): truly they were a people given to Evil, a rebellious people.

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

pleasant, agreeable, to be or become delightful, delicious, to please.21 The Quran categorically

states that we can eat whatever is wholesome and nourishing (tayyeb).g It also implies that
we cannot consume what is harmful to our body (khabeeth). The Quran has used the term
‘khabeeth’ for many things: land (007.058), wealth (002.267), people (003.179, 008.036,
024.026), property (004.002, 005.100), word (014.024), food (007.157), and actions
(021.074) and contrasted with good in the same category. Irrespective of the category, the
Quran advises us to avoid what is ‘khabeeth’.
Wisdom:
There must be a reason why ProphetSAW taught us to seek protection from ‘khoboth’ and
‘khabaaith’. By design toilette is a place where we discharge urine and feces. Every time we
press the lever after relieving ourselves, the swirling water not only whisks away our
excrement down into the sewer, it also shoots up a part of it up into the air – almost 15 feet
high with the force created by the sudden gush of water. It settles all over the counters, on
the towels, and on toothbrushes. These germs and fecal matter that get shot upwards are
called the "toilet plume."22 A single flush can sent E. coli airborne and can remain viable for
at least four to six hours later.23 When the next person goes to the toilette within six hours of
the previous flush, he will be exposed to the harmful bacteria still floating around in the
toilette.
Even in low-flow toilets in use today, this toilet plume could play an important role in the
transmission of infectious diseases. A 2013 research suggests "possible role of toilet plume
in airborne transmission of norovirus, SARS, and pandemic influenza."24 In order to avoid
such exposure, experts suggest to close the lid before flushing.25 One 2012 study found that
leaving the lid up versus down led to 12 times as much diarrhea-inducing bacterium
Clostridium difficile in the air.26
During the days of the ProphetSAW, though there was no flush system, the risk from exposure
to human feces, which can cause infectious diseases, was ever present. There are numerous
infections of all different types that can be communicated through feces. It can cause bacterial
infections e.g. cholera and other infectious diarrhea (also called dysentery) such as E coli
diarrhea, salmonella or shigella. It can also cause viral infections e.g. rotavirus, norovirus
(which causes food poisoning on cruise ships), and hepatitis A and E. It can also have parasites
such as giardia and cryptosporidium, and various different kinds of worms including
pinworms, ascariasis and tapeworms.27
Our information thus suggests that when the ProphetSAW used the terms ‘khoboth’ and
‘khabaaith’, he was teaching us to seek protection from the ever present germs in toilette.
Since the purpose of the dua is to seek protection from germs that could harm us, this dua
should be applicable in any place or situation where we have the potential of being exposed
to harmful germs. Nowadays we experience flu epidemic on yearly basis. Since viruses are
harmful ‘germs’, we should be able to harness the benefit of this dua not just in the toilette,
but also in flu seasons.

g
005.004. They ask thee what is lawful (halal) to them (as food). Say: lawful unto you are (all) things good
and pure (tayyeb): and what ye have taught your trained hunting animals (to catch) in the manner directed
to you by Allah. eat what they catch for you, but pronounce the name of Allah over it: and fear Allah. for
Allah is swift in taking account.

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Stay put during Epidemic:

The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
“If you hear of an outbreak of plague in a land, do not enter it; but if the plague breaks
out in a place while you are in it, do not leave that place.” (Bukhari and Muslim.)28
Wisdom:
Nowadays most of the epidemics are a result of spread of viruses, which infect all life forms.
Of the millions of types of viruses in the environment, about 5,000 virus species have been
identified.29 Though we are already familiar with many of the viruses that cause the common
cold, influenza, chickenpox, cold sores, rabies, Ebola virus disease, AIDS (HIV), and avian
influenza30, the most recent arrival belong to the family of Coronaviruses (CoV). These are a
large family of viruses that cause illness ranging from the common cold to more severe
diseases such as Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) and Severe Acute
Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV) and now Coronavirus disease (COVID-19), which has
reached pandemic level and is causing havoc in stock market. It is a new strain that was
discovered in 2019 in humans. These are transmitted between animals and people. Detailed
investigations found that SARS-CoV was transmitted from civet cats to humans and MERS-
CoV from dromedary camels to humans. Several known coronaviruses are circulating in
animals that have not yet infected humans. Common signs of infection include respiratory
symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases,
infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute respiratory syndrome, kidney failure and even
death.31
The rate or speed of transmission of viral infections depends on factors that include
population density, the number of susceptible individuals, (i.e., those not immune), the
quality of healthcare and the weather. The key to stop the spread of virus is to break the chain
of infection in populations during outbreaks of viral diseases. The first step is to find the
source of the outbreak and to identify the virus. Once the virus has been identified, the chain
of transmission can sometimes be broken by vaccines. When vaccines are not available,
sanitation and disinfection can be effective. Often, infected people are isolated from the rest
of the community, and those that have been exposed to the virus are placed in quarantine.
The recent outbreak of COVID-19 attest to the wise statement of the ProphetSAW: isolate the
area which is plagued from the rest of the population.
Intermittent Fasting:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Intermittent fasting is something the ProphetSAW practiced on a regular basis. He would fast
every Monday and Thursday and also on 13th to 15th of every month. Even when he wasn’t
fasting, his eating routine is pretty much similar to the protocol of intermittent fasting as he
would mostly only consume food once a day. And while his diet was simple, it was full of
nutritious food items like dates, watermelon, milk and olive oil.32
Our ProphetSAW greatly encouraged us to keep our diet healthy and organic. He said, “No man
fills a container worse than his stomach”.
In another statement, he said, “A few morsels that keep his back upright are sufficient for him.
If he has to, then he should keep one-third for food, one-third for drink and one-third for his
breathing”.33
Another hadith says: “Don’t indulge in over-eating because it would quench the light of faith
within your hearts”34

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Wisdom:
Intermittent fasting (IF) is currently one of the world's most popular health and fitness
trends. Many studies show that it can have powerful effects on your body and brain and may
even help you live longer.35 Here are the main health benefits of intermittent fasting36:
• Weight loss: Intermittent fasting can help you lose weight and belly fat, without
having to consciously restrict calories.
• Insulin resistance: Intermittent fasting can reduce insulin resistance, lowering
blood sugar by 3–6% and fasting insulin levels by 20–31%, which should protect
against type 2 diabetes.
• Inflammation: Some studies show reductions in markers of inflammation, a key
driver of many chronic diseases.
• Heart health: Intermittent fasting may reduce “bad” LDL cholesterol, blood
triglycerides, inflammatory markers, blood sugar and insulin resistance — all risk
factors for heart disease.
• Cancer: Animal studies suggest that intermittent fasting may prevent cancer.
• Brain health: Intermittent fasting increases the brain hormone BDNF and may aid
the growth of new nerve cells. It may also protect against Alzheimer’s disease.
• Anti-aging: Intermittent fasting can extend lifespan in rats. Studies showed that
fasted rats lived 36–83% longer.
There are several different ways of doing intermittent fasting — all of which involve splitting
the day or week into eating and fasting periods. During the fasting periods, you eat either very
little or nothing at all. These are the most popular methods:
• The 16/8 method: It involves skipping breakfast and restricting your daily eating
period to 8 hours, such as 1–9 p.m. Then you fast for 16 hours in between.
• Eat-Stop-Eat: This involves fasting for 24 hours, once or twice a week, for example
by not eating from dinner one day until dinner the next day.
• The 5:2 diet: This diet, also known as fast diet, is more of a lifestyle because there are
no requirements about which foods to eat but rather when you should eat them. For
five days per week, you eat normally and don’t have to think about restricting calories.
Then, on the other two days, you reduce your calorie intake to a quarter of your daily
needs. This is about 500 calories per day for women, and 600 for men. You can choose
whichever two days of the week you prefer, as long as there is at least one non-fasting
day in between them. One common way of planning the week is to fast on Mondays
and Thursdays, with two or three small meals, then eat normally for the rest of the
week. Eating "normally", however, does not mean you can eat anything. You should
eat the same amount of food as if you hadn't been fasting at all.37
Dental Hygeine:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Brushing teeth is highly recommended by the ProphetSAW. Ai’shaRA reported that the
ProphetSAW said, “the miswak (a twig from the tree) cleanses and purifies the mouth and pleases
the God”.

Copyright © 2020 Mahmood N. A. Jawaid 8

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Abu HurairaRA reported from the ProphetSAW, “Were it not that I might overburden my
followers, I would have commanded them to use the miswak before every prayer.” 38
Wisdom:
Brushing anytime is good, but five times is especially preferred: (1) ablution, (2) prayer, (3)
reading the Quran, (4) rising from sleep, (5) when the taste in one’s mouth is changed.39
From health science perspective, maintaining good oral hygiene is important for one’s teeth
and gums. Healthy teeth not only enable one to look and feel good, they make it possible to
eat and speak properly. It is also good for overall well-being. Daily preventive care, including
proper brushing and flossing, allows one to avoid painful, expensive, and worrisome
treatment. In between regular visits to the dentist, the following simple steps could decrease
the risk of developing tooth decay, gum disease and other dental problems40:
• Brushing thoroughly twice a day and flossing daily
• Eating a balanced diet and limiting snacks between meals
• Using dental products that contain fluoride, including toothpaste
• Rinsing with a fluoride mouthrinse if your dentist tells you to
• Making sure that your children under 12 drink fluoridated water or take a fluoride
supplement if they live in a non-fluoridated area.
Sniffing and Blowing Nose:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Abu HurairahRA reported the ProphetSAW said, “When one of you performs ablution, He should
sniff water up to his nostrils and then blow it out”41
AliRA, once called for water for ablution, rinsed his mouth, sniffed up water into his nostrils
and blew it out with his left hand. He did this three times and then said, “That is how the
ProphetSAW would purify himself”42
Wisdom:
Nasal irrigation (nasal rinsing) is the passing of water or saline solution through the nasal
passages. This can soothe inflamed tissue and remove irritants like allergens. It may also help
clear mucus. It is a personal hygiene practice in which the nasal cavity is washed to flush out
mucus and debris from the nose and sinuses. It can help relieve symptoms of common cold
and the symptoms associated with allergic rhinitis.43
Washing after Defecation:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
AnasRA said: “The ProphetSAW used to relieve himself, then another boy and I would bring a
vessel of water and a short spear [to use as a sutrah for the prayer he was going to do after
doing wudoo’] and he would cleanse himself with the water.”44
Wisdom:
This is now supported and recommended by modern researchers. They say not washing or
just using toilet paper can lead to spreading of germs like E.coli. 45

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Drinking in Steps:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
The ProphetSAW always advised to drink water slowly.46
Wisdom:
Now science too says that drinking too much water at one time can cause electrolyte
imbalance in the body which may lead to fatigue or dizziness.47 It can also cause choking.
Wearing Shoes:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
The Prophet advised: “Nobody should walk wearing only one shoe; he should wear both or
put off both.”48
He also advised: “When the straps of one of your shoes is broken, do not walk about with the
other shoe in your foot till you had the first repaired.”49
He also forbade wearing shoe while standing.50
Wisdom:
Walking wearing only one shoe with one of the straps broken may cause foot imbalance. It
“can affect the way you walk and move or your gait cycle; the three-part process of taking a
step. From stepping out with your heel, to your entire foot, to your toes leaving the ground,
each part of the gait cycle causes small spinal movements. Two key signs of foot imbalance
are noticed during the gait cycle:
1. Pronation: When your foot rolls in when you walk.
2. Supination: When your foot rolls out.
Neither of these should happen in a properly-aligned body that has symmetrical feet and
level knees, pelvis, and shoulders.
Both of these conditions can put stress on your spine, reduce its ability to absorb shock, throw
off your balance, and have adverse effects on your body’s response, position and speed
changes. Foot imbalance not only affects your posture and stability but also the central
nervous system, which stems from the spine. Improper spinal alignment can wreak havoc on
your nervous system, causing tingling sensations in your extremities, pain, and joint issues.
A gait analysis or exam performed by your chiropractor is the first step to diagnosing a foot
imbalance. Not only will chiropractors evaluate your hip and shoulder heights, knee rotations
and spinal curves, but they will also most likely take an X-ray. They’ll tell you about the degree
or your pronation or supination, and will help to put together a care program that includes
the following:
• Chiropractic Adjustments: Used to bring your spinal column back into alignment, re-
training your bones to stay in their proper locations and providing you relief from pain,
and better balance, coordination, and mobility. Regularly scheduled adjustments may be
required.
• Orthotics Inserts: These will help to level out your feet, improving your balance,
stability, and gait. These inserts will be customized to the impact you’ll be putting on

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

your feet and the shape of your arches, and will help your spine to maintain and hold the
adjustment for longer.
• Conditioning Program: A tailor-made program specifically for your needs to give you
strength and teach you stretching exercises to help build up the muscles involved in your
individual diagnosis.
Proper spine health stems from your feet; in fact, about one-fourth of your body’s bones are
in your feet. Unfortunately, almost everyone will be affected by foot imbalance within their
lives in one way or another. Chiropractic treatment of your foot imbalance can immediately
relieve pain experienced when walking or moving, and help prevent long-term health issues
that can come because of an improperly aligned spine. Keeping your feet healthy provides
your body and spine with a strong foundation.”51
Wearing shoe while standing can cause the person to fall that can result in head injury. Most
of the deaths in old age is because of head injury from fall. Since the brain is located inside
the skull, a head injury from fall can cause damage to the brain, which is a sensitive area of
the body and controls everything from motor functions, cognitive skills and much more. One
of the most common symptoms of a head injury after a fall is a headache. If the headache gets
gradually worse, or if it starts out as very painful, it could be a sign of a serious injury. It can
also cause nausea, which is often the sign of a serious injury. It may also be associated with a
concussion. If the fall has caused skull fracture, it can be traumatic. Many head injuries can
also cause memory loss. It could also cause dizziness from concussion and unconsciousness.
It can also cause seizure if something has gone into brain from the fall.52
Sleeping on the Right Side:
ProphetSAW’s Practice:
According to al-Baraa’ ibn ‘Aazib RA, the ProphetSAW said: “When you go to bed, do wudoo’ as
if for prayer, then lie down on your right side…”53 He also reported the ProphetSAW used to
sleep on his right side, putting his right hand on his right cheek.54
The father of Mu’ish Tafkhat al-GhifariRA relates: “I was lying on my belly in the mosque.
Someone startled me with a touch of his foot and observed, ‘God disapproves of this posture
of lying down.’ When I looked up, I saw the person of the ProphetSAW. 55
Wisdom:
Most of us adopt one of the following postures while sleeping:
Sleeping on Back or Stomach56:
Sleeping on back for overweight people is definitely bad for heart. This is because when you
sleep on your back, the extra weight collapses your airway causing sleep apnea. Studies show
that sleep apnea dramatically increases your risk of heart failure and atrial fibrillation.57 On
the other hand, stomach sleeping is a perfect recipe for neck and back issues.
Sleeping on Right58:
Gravity plays a role in where the heart goes during sleep. Sleeping on the left side will pull
the heart toward chest wall. In contrast, sleeping on the right side will pull the heart toward
the center of the chest. This subtle change in the position of heart may affect symptoms,
cardiac output, or even heart rate.
Based on the science, the following are the four benefits of sleeping on the right.

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

1. Less Shortness of Breath

“As far back as 1937 doctors have noted59 that heart patients breath better sleeping on their
right side. Indeed, the worse the cardiac function, the more likely people are to sleep right
side down. While the reason for this isn’t entirely clear, it may have to do with a better venous
return and lower pressures within the heart and lungs.”60
2. Better Cardiac Output
For the same reasons as above, cardiac output may be better with right side sleeping. Since
because of gravity, the heart is pulled toward the center of the chest, this may optimize
cardiac performance.
3. Fewer Palpitations
For people with heart palpitation, “as the heart is in the center of your chest with right-sided
sleeping, studies show that palpitations become much less noticeable.61 In contrast, due to
gravity, sleeping on the left side will pull the heat towards the chest wall, causing the person
to feel every irregular beat of his heart.
4. Lower Heart Rate and Less Sympathetic Nervous Activity
The sympathetic nervous system is the fight or flight response. This fight or flight response
makes the heart rate and blood pressure go up. It has been observed among the heart patients
that sympathetic nervous system stimulation makes their heart failure, chest pain, or
arrhythmias worse.62 And when it comes to sleeping and sympathetic stimulation, studies
show that right-sided sleeping may be better.63
Sleeping on Left64:
Not everyone does best with right side sleeping. In fact, there are three distinct groups of
people that may do worse.
1. Acid Reflux Sufferers
People suffering from acid reflux may sleep better on their left side. Studies show that acid
reflux may be worse with right side sleeping.65 Thus, if your acid reflux is causing you more
symptoms than your heart, you may want to consider sleeping on your left side.
2. Vagus Nerve Arrhythmias
The vagus nerve connects the heart, brain, and gut. Because of this connection, vagus nerve
activation may be an important cause of arrhythmias. With vagus nerve stimulation, you get
increased parasympathetic activity which is the exact opposite of the fight or flight response
with sympathetic stimulation. Thus, to quiet your vagus nerve at night, studies suggest that
you may want to try sleeping on your left side.66
3. Too Slow of a Heart Rate at Night (Bradycardia)
If you have ever worn a heart monitor, your doctor may have told you that your heart beats
too slow at night. If this is the case, sleeping on your left side could stimulate a sympathetic
response and increase your heart rate.
Dr. John Day, a cardiologist/electrophysiologist at the Intermountain Medical Center Heart
Institute in Salt Lake City, Utah, observed that most of his cardiac patients sleep better on
their right side. 67

Safety
Put out Fire before Sleeping:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Once fire broke out in the house of a person in Median at night. Observing the situation, the
ProphetSAW enjoined: “When you go to bed, do not leave a fire burning in your house
(extinguish it.)”68 It also imply that we should never left fire unattended.
Wisdom:
According to statistics from the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 69, there are more
than 350,000 home fires each year in the U.S., leading to around 2,000 deaths. --- Cooking fires
are among the most common types of house fires, causing around 48 percent of all residential
fires. They are very often caused by greases that become overheated on a stove or in an oven.
Experts recommend never to ‘leave the kitchen unattended when cooking in oil or when
cooking a food that produces grease. Most kitchen fires start because homeowners leave food
cooking unsupervised on a stove or in an oven. By the time the fire is discovered, it’s usually
too late. They recommend clean the cookware thoroughly to prevent grease from building up
over time.70
Portable cooking appliances, such as toasters and electric griddles can also be a source of fires.
These should never be left unsupervised. We should also make sure they are cool to the touch
before storing them away. We should also regularly clean the toasters of crumbs that might
ignite if they build up inside the appliance.71
“During the outdoor cooking season, barbecue grills left unattended on a wooden deck or near
the exterior walls of a home can also be a source of fire. A heated grill next to a wooden fence
can easily cause fire, and grills have been known to ignite the exterior walls of a home or garage
if positioned too close.”72
Shaking Clothes Before Wearing:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
The ProphetSAW was once wearing socks in a jungle. He put on one sock and was intending to
put on the second one when a crow dived and carried off the sock. The crow soared to a great
height and dropped the sock on the ground. The shock of landing threw out of the sock a
snake which fell at some distance. On seeing this the ProphetSAW offered thanks to AllahST and
observed: “It is the duty of a Muslim that when he is intending to wear socks he should shake
them first.” 73 This ruling should be applicable to all the clothes.
On another occasion the ProphetSAW advised: “When a person leaves the bed and returns to it
again, he should dust it three times with the edge of his wrapping cloth, for he does not know
what creature may have crept on to the bed in his absence.”74
Wisdom:
Even today when we may think that our house is bug free, we are still exposed to them. Since
most of the housing developments are built by cutting trees, this destabilizes all the unwanted
inhabitants that were living in this area. It takes time for them to adjust to their eviction. Till
then, to the surprise of new dwellers, they end up finding their way into the house.

Wisdom of Prophet MuhammadSAW

Conservation
Conservation of Resources:
The ProphetSAW happened to pass by a Companion, Sa’dRA, as he was performing ablution
(wudhu) next to a river. At this, the ProphetSAW said, “Sa’d what is this squandering?”
Sa’d replied: “Can there be an idea of squandering (israf) in ablution?”
The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said: “Yes, even if you are by the side of a flowing river.”75
He implied: take only what you need, even if there is plenty.

Planting Trees:
The ProphetSAW advised: “If the Hour (the day of Resurrection) is about to be established and
one of you was holding a palm shoot, let him take advantage of even one second before the
Hour is established to plant it.”76
Social Science
Perception is Reality
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Once the ProphetSAW was escorting one of his wives to her room while it was dark. He passed
by a group of companionsRA. He pointed out to them that the lady was his wife. The
companions responded that they could not think otherwise. The ProphetSAW replied, they may
not, but Satan can dissuade them,
Wisdom:
There is a trite leadership maxim “Perception is Reality.” It means that for others, how they
perceive you is reality to them, irrespective of how you perceive yourself. It means that your
behaviors and their results matter infinitely more than your intentions. It means that if you
have got a negative reputation that you would like to shake, then there is some underlying
behavior which has led to it. Leadership books will tell you that it is your responsibility to
manage your reputation.77
The ProphetSAW knew very well that, even if the companions did not say anything, they may
take a negative perception of the situation. Even if they did not, Satan was ever ready to put
those ideas in their minds. So he took an immediate action. He immediately corrected the
perception and hence warded off a potential negative propaganda. It also teaches us a lesson.
We should not be content with our good intentions. We have to make sure that we are not
making a negative perception. If we are doing so, it is not the fault of others, it is our fault.
Defrauding the Treasury:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Ibn AbbasRA reported: “When a nation starts defrauding the government’s treasury, fear of
enemy sets in their heart.”78
Wisdom:
The purpose of the funds in the treasury is to use it for the benefit of the whole society. These
funds are appropriated according to the need in various sectors. If people start defrauding
the treasury, individual will get rich at the expense of the society. This is what is happening
in the third world countries. As the funds in the treasury shrinks, the people and sectors

needing money will not get sufficient funds. This will weaken the society, poverty will
increase, the infrastructure will deteriorate, and defense spending will decrease. This will
strengthen the hands of the enemy and the society will feel vulnerable to their manipulations.
Proliferation of Fornication:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Ibn AbbasRA reported: “When fornication proliferates in a society premature death
increases.”79
Wisdom:
Sex with multiple partners promotes sexually transmitted diseases, which is caused by
bacteria or germs. These bacteria enter the body through nose, throat, vagina, and rectum.
Once a person is infected, he or she can infect others with whom he or she come in contact
with. There are also instances where a woman could transmit the disease to her unborn baby.
Hence, upon birth, the baby would have congenital syphilis. This could even be transmitted
through coming into contact with infected articles like clothing, or through kissing.80 The
following is the statistics from the World Health Organization81:
o About 93,000 deaths from STDs excluding HIV in Africa 2002 (The World Health Report,
WHO, 2004)
o About 2,000 deaths from STDs excluding HIV in The Americas 2002 (The World Health
Report, WHO, 2004)
o About 58,000 deaths from STDs excluding HIV in South East Asia 2002 (The World Health
Report, WHO, 2004)
o About 23,000 deaths from STDs excluding HIV in Eastern Mediterranean 2002 (The World
Health Report, WHO, 2004)
o About 2,000 deaths from STDs excluding HIV in Western Pacific 2002 (The World Health
Report, WHO, 2004)
Shortchanging:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Ibn AbbasRA reported: “When people start shortchanging others, the provision vanishes.”82
Wisdom:
In a capitalistic society, the price of an article is determined by demand and supply. When
people shortchange each other, the buyer is paying more than the worth of the article. When
this activity proliferates in the society, everyone is paying more than what he should be
paying for the article. This reduces the buying power of the individuals and increases the
inflation thus reducing the provisions of individuals.
Miscarriage of Justice:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Ibn AbbasRA reported: “When injustice proliferates in a society, the murder rate increases.”83
Wisdom:
The success of the West in its adherence to rule of law. The rule of la means that every one is
playing according to a predefined rule. When courts do not deliver justice as it happens in

most of the third world countries and tow the line of the rulers. When people will not get
justice from court, they will take the law in their own hand which will lead to mayhem.
Revoking the Pledge:
The ProphetSAW’s Advice:
Ibn AbbasRA reported: “When stop keeping up their covenant, enemy is imposed on them.”84
Wisdom:
When people will not adhere to their commitment, trust will vanish. People will be suspicious
of each other and will start back stabbing each other. This will be an opportune time for the
enemy to take over.
Decision Making:
One year after their defeat at Badr in 623, the Meccans, anxious to avenge their defeat, raised
another force and headed to Median. Rather than attacking Medina itself, which was
populated by numerous strongholds that would have required long sieges to overcome, they
camped on the pastures north of the city, hoping that the Muslims would come out to meet
them. Hearing this, the ProphetSAW convened a war council. There were two views over how
to best repel the Meccans. The ProphetSAW and many of the senior figures suggested that it
would be safer to fight within Medina and take advantage of its heavily fortified strongholds.
Younger Muslims argued that the Meccans were destroying their crops, and that huddling in
the strongholds would destroy Muslim prestige. The ProphetSAW eventually conceded to the
wishes of the latter. When he went in his cottage to put the war gear on, the senior folks
reminded the younger ones the real desire of the ProphetSAW. Upon realizing this, when the
ProphetSAW came out in his war gear, the younger ones felt regret and wanted to go back to
the position the ProphetSAW had taken earlier. The Prophet replied, “It is not for a Prophet,
when he has put on hus armor, to take it off until God has judged between him and his
enemies.”85
Wisdom:
There is time to consult and there is a time to act. Once the consultation is over and decision
has been made, there is no going back. The decision must be executed.
