LABORATORY MANAGEMENT SEATWORK ASSIGNMENT 1B:


The different types and levels of Clinical/ Diagnostic Laboratories in the Philippines, provide their
service capabilities.

 PRIMARY LEVEL
As the name implies it refers to the primary care focuses on the basic healthcare services
that address the health issues faced by an individual. The goal is to make the general health
solutions accessible to every individual as per the guidance of WHO.

Minimum facilities required:


- Clinical centrifuge
- Hemacytometer
- Microhematocrit centrifuge
- Microscope with OIO
- Hemoglobinometer
- Differential blood cell counter

Service capabilities
- Routine hematology
- Routine urinalysis
- Routine fecalysis
- Blood typing (hospital-based)
- Quanlitative platelet determination (hospital-based)

 SECONDARY LEVEL
Individuals reach out to the secondary medical care providers through the referral of the
primary healthcare professionals. Unlike the primary level clinical laboratories, the
secondary level now includes specialists such as cardiologists, dermatologists, urologists and
other specialists.

Minimum facilities required:


- Primary laboratory equipment or instruments
- Refrigerator
- Photometer
- Water bath
- Timer

Service capabilities
- Contains all the capabilities of the primary level
- Additional service capabilities:
o Routine chemistry
o Quantitative platelet determination
o Crossmatching (hospital-based)
o Gram straining

 TERTIARY LEVEL
Advanced diagnostic centers, specialized intensive care units and modern medical
facilities are the key features in this level. When individuals require advanced medical
procedures such as major surgeries, transplants, replacements and long-term medical care
management for diseases such as cancer, neurological disorders, this is the right level of
laboratory they should be into.

Minimum facilities required:


- Secondary laboratory equipment or instruments
- Incubator
- Trip or analytical balance
- Bunsen burner
- Rotator
- Serofuge
- Autoclave
- Drying oven
- Biosafety cabinet

Service capabilities
- Contains all the capabilities of the secondary level
- Additional service capabilities:
o Special chemistry
o Special hematology
o Immunology and serology
o Microbiology
o Autopsy
