CHAPTER 7 ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING

Fig. 7.1 AC Electric Locomotive

7.0 Introduction

This chapter deals with the Electric Traction system and other electrical installations pertaining to
General Electrical Services that include power supply arrangement for stations, signaling system,
residential quarters and other service buildings in the railway network. Required modification to
existing power supply installations, HT/LT power line networks crossing the proposed Railway
alignment is also included in the scope.

The traction power supply system is the railway electrical distribution network used to provide
electrical power to electric trains, which comprises of Traction Substation (TSS), Sectioning Post
(SP) and Sub-sectioning and Paralleling Posts (SSP) in addition to connections to the overhead
contact line or OHE and to the traction return and grounding system. Entire system for traction
power supply shall be controlled by “Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition System” (SCADA)
from a centralized Remote-Control Center (RCC) at Nagpur. The traction electrification system is
therefore combination of the Traction Power Supply, OHE and SCADA system.

7.1 Design System Adopted

The Indian Railways have more than 630,000 KMs of Tracks and most are electrified with 25 kV
50Hz AC single phase system except for Katni-Bina and Bilaspur-Katni section which is electrified
with 2x25 kV traction system. All other electrified routes adopt uniform designs of 25 kV AC
single phase Electrification, for which standard Design, Drawings and Specifications developed by

RDSO exist. Railway route on the either end of the section that is at Nagbhir and Itwari end is
already electrified with conventional 25 KV AC single phase traction system.

It is appropriate to mention here that track for NAB-ITR section is being designed for speed
potential of 160 kmph for passenger traffic and 100 kmph for goods traffic. Therefore conventional
25 kV AC traction system is quite suitable for operation at the proposed operational speeds.

In 2 x 25 kV traction system, Traction transformers of higher capacity (Scott connected 50kV

Secondary) are employed and a feeder is run through-and-through with Auto Transformer at an
interval of 10 – 15 kms, which increases the overall capital cost of Electric Traction system by
about 50to 60% as compared to the 25 KV conventional AC Traction system in vogue. Therefore,
from proposed traffic density point of view, it is un-economical to adopt 2 x 25 kV systems for
Nagbhir – Itwari Broad gauge section as the rate of return will be remarkably less.

Hence the Traction System designs with 25 kV 50 Hz AC without Booster Transformers along with
Simple Polygonal Overhead Equipment (OHE) is proposed to be adopted for Naghbir–Itwari broad
gauge section. Complete Traction System shall be compliant to latest RDSO standards and
guidelines for 25 KV AC Single Phase traction system.

7.2 Design of Power Supply System

7.2.1 General

Even though either end stations i.e. Nagbhir and Itwari are electrified with 25 KV AC traction
system with Traction sub-stations located at Nagbhir and Kanhan, the same supply is insufficient to
cater the traction and other general power supply requirements of proposed section between
Nagbhir and Itwari. Therefore it is necessary to provide new 2 nos. Traction Sub-stations between
Nagbhir and Itwari for which it is imperative to obtain Extra High Tension (EHT) supply of 220 KV
or 132 KV for Railway’s Traction Sub-station through outsource.

Accordingly, it is proposed to avail 220/132 kV AC two phase double circuit supply from
Maharashtra State Electricity Transmission Company (MSETCL) from nearest possible EHT power
supply point which shall be stepped down to 25 KV AC single phase by installing 132-220/25 kV
Traction Transformers and will be fed to overhead equipment (OHE) installed over the BG track. As
per the design parameters, Neutral section shall be provided at Sectioning Post (SP) in between the
two adjacent substations to separate the feeds to avoid phase to phase short circuit while negotiating
the train pantograph. All the traction substations shall be provided with PTFE neutral section in
front of TSS to facilitate independent use of both the traction transformer at TSS. Sub-sectioning
and Paralleling posts (SSPs) shall be provided in between TSS and SP to further sectionalize the
overhead equipment.

7.2.2 Traction Transformer Capacity Calculations

Capacity of the Traction Transformer has been calculated based on the traffic projection and
optimum utilization of the line capacity. Traffic projections as indicated in the “Traffic Study and

Financial Analysis for Nagpur-Nagbhir gauge Conversion” submitted by M/s KITCO Limited
suggests that there will be movement of 10 rakes each of loaded and empty per day (Total 20) and 4
passenger trains per day in each direction (Total 8). Extracts of the report for Goods rakes per day
from various loading points through this line are depicted below.

Table 7.1 - Goods Traffic Forecast

Based on the traffic projection above, peak power requirement works out to 30 MVA if the entire
load of 28 trains as mentioned above is distributed uniformly over a period of one day (24 Hours) at
the headway of 50 minutes as indicated below.

Power Requirement for 106 km section 30000.00 KVA 30 MVA

However, for calculation of TSS transformer capacity, maximum possible load at any given point of
time has been considered in the feeding zone of one TSS. As such total 5 trains (3 Goods and 2
Passenger), one in each block section is considered in the feeding zone of one substation.

For the purpose of calculating optimum capacity of the traction transformer, loads as indicated in
Fig.7.2 below are considered in the feeding zone of Bhiwapur Traction substation. It is assumed
that all goods trains will be hauled by latest 3 phase technology locomotive type WAG-9.

Fig. 7.2 - Proposed Train Loads in Feeding Zone of Bhiwapur TSS

Power requirement for both, Tangent track and ruling gradient of 1:150 has been calculated to
arrive at the required capacity of Traction Transformer as indicated below.

It can be seen form the above calculations that 21.6/30 MVA (ONAN/ONAF) traction Transformers
will suffice the power requirement for projected traffic. Therefore, it is proposed to provide Two
Transformers of 21.6/30 MVA capacity at proposed both Traction Substations.

7.2.3 Power Supply Arrangement

Route length of Nagbhir - Itwari section is about 106 RKM. 25 KV AC conventional Traction
system permits substation spacing ranging from 45 to 50 kmph so that the voltage drop at farthest
end is within the permissible limits of 19 kV under peak load conditions. Taking into consideration
of Nagbhir-Itwari section of 104.887 kms and additional 1.179 kms of chord line at Nagbhir and
6.614 kms of WCL siding to Umred & 1.080 km WCL siding chord, in all 2 nos. Traction
Substations are proposed for Traction Power supply arrangement.

 Selection of TSS Location

Adjoining area of the proposed route on both end (NAB and ITR) is already electrified with 25
KV AC Traction and the existing nearest Traction substations are located at Nagbhir (132/25
kV TSS at NAB end) and at Kanhan (220/25 kV TSS at ITR End).

MRIDC 334 QTCPL

Final Location Survey for Proposed Gauge Conversion (BG) for Nagbhir ‐ Itwari NG Line (Including Proposed Rail Connectivity from
Umrer BG Yard to Existing WCL Yard at Umrer) with Electrification
Detailed Project Report

Kanhan TSS feeds very busy route including major yards and sidings located at Kalamna and
Itwari. A third line is also proposed on this route in future. It is therefore proposed to provide
SP near Bhandewadi.

Nagbhir TSS is provided with two traction transformers and presently feeds the entire section
from Gondia to Chanda Fort. Other two TSS are also planned and are under construction at
Hirdamali, and Mulmarora which will have one traction transformer each. As such Nagbhir
TSS which has two traction transformers is planned to cater for more load than the other two. It
is therefore proposed to provide SP at Nagbhir (on ITR end).

These two SPs will leave about 93 kms of main line and 7 km chord for Umred to be fed by two
traction substations proposed for the section. Two traction substations are therefore proposed at
Kuhi and Bhiwapur with approximately equal feeding zone.

Fig. 220 kV/25 kV AC Traction Sub-Station

 Availability of incoming Power Supply

It is proposed to avail incoming power supply from existing 220/132 KV AC network of
MSETCL. HV Power supply network Map of MSETCL is attached as Annexure- I. Local
MSETCL authorities at Kuhi revealed that a new 220 KV Grid Sub-station is coming up at
Dongargaon near Kuhi. Thus HT supply at 220 kV level can be availed from this new GSS for
Kuhi TSS which will need to lay about 11-12 kms of Transmission line on Towers to extend
220 kV feeder up to proposed Traction Substation at Kuhi.

Power supply for Bhiwapur TSS can be obtained by providing LILO arrangement on existing
Mokhaburdi 132 kV feeder line near Ambhora. Possibility of tapping this line for Traction
Power supply has also been discussed with MSETCL (EHV Const. Division, Nagpur). This
line crosses the proposed railway track near km.1162. Traction substation at Bhiwapur is also
proposed at km. 1162 and it may need 2-3 kms of transmission line to be laid up to the proposed
Traction Substation site depending on the feasibility of providing LILO arrangement on existing
transmission line.

The Traction substations may have to be provided with separate bay at MSETCL (at GSS or in
the TSS premises itself) to create switching and metering facilities. Provision for this work has
been kept in the estimate. Also, the location of the Traction substations is selected in such a
way that additional space, if required for MSETCL switch yard, can be made available next to
proposed traction substations.

 Sectioning Diagram
It is proposed to provide 3 SPs and 4 SSPs for main line section along with two traction
substations at Kuhi and Bhiwapur. One additional SP is proposed at Umred on the proposed
chord line between Umred and Bamhani as Umred Coal siding is fed by Butibori TSS of
Central Railway. As such following switching posts are proposed.

TSS - 02

SP - 04

SSP - 04

Fig. 7.5 Design of Overhead Equipment in a Electrified Track

7.3.1 Scope

The Overhead Equipment (OHE) is a system which feeds electric power supply to the pantograph
of electric locomotives. Simple Polygonal type conventional OHE system as per prevailing
RDSO standards is proposed to be adopted on this section. Catenary wire and Contact wire of
OHE are supported on bracket arrangement aerially above the Railway Tracks by providing
Fabricated and Galvanized cantilever masts for single line or multi-track fabricated steel Portal
structures for station yard. The Track for the section has been designed to suit maximum speed of
160 kmph. Accordingly, OHE shall be designed to suit the operation at proposed speed of 160
kmph. Existing OHE System of RDSO is designed for design speed of 160 kmph and operating
speed of 140 kmph. The same design shall be followed for the proposed project. Auto tensioning
devices (3 pulley types) shall be used for auto-tensioning of OHE conductors to fixed value of
1000 kgf under varying temperature conditions. Anti-creep wires are provided in the half-section
of each tension length in order to keep the OHE in steady condition.

Major features of the proposed OHE are given in the Table-7.4 below.

7.3.2 OHE Structures

 Normal OHE structures

OHE Structures and gantries shall consist of any one or more of the following types and as per
the standard RDSO specification for OHE steel structures.

Broad flange beams (BFB)

Rolled steel joists (RSJ).

Fabricated steel Structures (B series masts, TTCs and Portal Structures)).

Structure/ uprights shall generally be embedded in concrete foundation blocks.

 Structures on Bridges/Viaducts
Major bridges in the section may have to be provided with the OHE structures on the bridge
piers. These structures shall be designed in accordance with the “Guidelines for Provision of
OHE Mast for Electrification at New and Existing Bridge Pier/Abutment” issued by Bridges
and Structures Directorate of RDSO. Necessary provision for fixing bolted base type fabricated
steel OHE structures shall be made on each pier (on either side) during construction of the
bridges.

7.3.3 Bonding and Earthing

Bonding and earthing shall be provided to comply with following RDSO Codes

1. Code of Practice for Bonding and earthing of 25kV, AC 50Hz Single phase Traction system
No. ETI/OHE/71(11/90) (Latest version)

2. Code of Practice for Earthing of Power Supply installations for 25 kV, AC 50 Hz. Single
Phase Traction System No. ET1/PSI/120 (2/91) (Latest Version)

This aspect has been taken into consideration while preparing the BOQ of Traction works.

For 25 kV Electric Traction, the negative path of the electric traction is maintained through
track rails and therefore maintenance of continuity of Track Return Path without interference is
vital. For this purpose, Rail Joints are metallically connected outside of each fish plates at each
rail joint with standard MS Strap Bond riveted to rail with Copper Rivets on either end.
Similarly, jumpering of Point Rails, Cross and Wing Rails, Derailing Points, Welded Rail
Expansion Joints etc. with M.S straps is also paramount. Continuity of negative return via
running Track rails to Traction Sub-Station is through Negative Pothead and Underground
Cables provided near track side in the vicinity of each Traction Sub- Station up to negative
point at TSS. Similarly, all Traction Masts, Portals, Signal Poles, Steel Girder Bridges Fencing
near Tracks etc. must be kept at earth potential for which Earthing of such structure to Rails or
directly to earth shall be provided in accordance with prevailing RDSO guidelines.

7.3.4 Booster Transformers and Return conductors

Optical Fiber Cable is proposed to be provided along the track for communication/power
transmission along the track alignment and as such the provision of Booster Transformer or
Return conductor may not be necessary. Therefore, Booster Transformers are not considered for
this project.

7.4 Design of SCADA System

7.4.1 General
SCADA provides the highest level of observation control and command of the Power Supply
system. It is an operational nerve Centre which allows the personnel in charge of the Operations
and Energy management to get a real-time status of the installations, to make relevant

104 and IEC 60870-5 series of open protocol standard as per revised RDSO specification no.
TI/SPC/RCC/SCADA/0130 Rev.02 or latest.

7.4.3 Proposed SCADA System Scheme

The Traction power supply installations in the section shall be controlled by Supervisory
Control and Data Acquisition System (SCADA). Existing SCADA System is located at Nagpur
for control of all electrified sections. Master Station equipment for Itwari-Nagbhir section is
proposed to be accommodated in existing SCADA control room at Nagpur. Proposed SCADA
system shall be integrated with the existing SCADA system at boundary posts to provide
necessary operational interlocks to ensure safety. For this purpose, additional RTUs (of the
same make as the existing SCADA system in the section) shall be provided at NAB SP, ITR SP
and URR SP within necessary interlocking for operation of the common devices at boundary
posts.

7.5 Power Supply for Signaling System

25kV/110V, 10KVA Auxiliary Transformers with changeover panel shall be provided at all
crossing stations for power supply to the signaling system. There shall be local supply from
MSEDCL, standby DG sets for signaling system in addition to ATs. The changeover system
shall be automatic to facilitate uninterrupted power supply to the signals.
