I. Learning Task (Module 2)

Name: Mamaril, Banessa Kaye E. Date: September 26, 2020
PHY201 – Lecture
Exercise: Introduction to Physics
I. Elaborate your answers for the following:
1. What is Physics?

Physics is the study of nature, energy, matter, and its properties. Physics has three
main branches, classical physics, relativity physics, and quantum physics. Classical physics
studies, movements of fluids and particles. It also composes thermodynamics,

electromagnetism, classical mechanics, and statistical mechanics. Relativity physics includes

two interrelated theories of Einstein, which are special relativity and general relativity.
General relativity explains the law of gravitation. Special relativity teaches the phenomenon
in the absence of gravity. Quantum physics, however, studies how atoms work. It also has
four branches, quantum mechanics, quantum statistics, quantum electrodynamics, and
quantum field theory. In conclusion, Physics is the study of matter, energy and their
interactions.

2. Give at least five applications of Physics in the development of our society. Explain its
importance.

Physics has plenty of contributions to the development of society. One example is the
application of physics in architecture. Because of physics, architects can design various
buildings that can keep its structure upright and support its weight. Second, the relationship
of physics to geology helps produce earthquake hazard maps. Third, Physics is involved in
the making of technology used within medical diagnostics. Namely, magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI), x-rays, and ultrasonic blood flow measurements, computerized tomography
(CT) scan. Fourth, the utilization of physics to computer science. Physics produces
knowledge needed for future technological advances, so it is the basis for most modern
technology. Lastly, quantum physics helps create the internet, which is one of the most used
inventions of our society.

3. Give the definition of each branch of Physics:

a. Astrophysics

Astrophysics is a branch of astronomy that is concerned with the study of the

Universe using the laws of physics. The etymology of Astrophysics is from two Latin
words; Astro, which means "star," and Phisis, which  means "nature." Some remarkable
discoveries in astrophysics are the Big Bang and the early Universe, the measurements of the
structure in the Universe, the discovery of Black Holes, and the discovery of planets around
other stars.

b. Biophysics

Biophysics is a branch of biology that uses techniques derived from physics.

Biophysics is concerned with the study of biological phenomena such as biological problems
and the structure of molecules in living organisms. Some of the remarkable discoveries in
Biophysics are the discovery of the structure of DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid) by James
Watson and Francis Crick, the fundamental hereditary material, Protein Structure and
Dynamics, and the Allosteric Model of Hemoglobin.

c. Medical Physics
Medical Physics is a branch of Applied Physics that uses the application of physics
theories, concepts, and methods to medicine and healthcare. Medical Physics is concerned
with improving human health and well-being. Specifically, diagnosis, prevention, and
treatment of human diseases. Some of the remarkable discoveries in Medical Physics that
had changed health care are the usage of particle accelerators to defeat cancer and the
technique for better detection of breast cancer.
d. Chemical Physics

Chemical physics is a branch of both chemistry and physics. However, it focuses

more on the characteristics and elements of physics. Chemical physics deals with the study of
an electron, nuclei, atoms, electron transportation, molecules, the quantum structure of
molecules, their interaction between them, and many more. All these studies are based on the
experiment of physics theory. Fun fact, in chemical physics, they use quantum mechanics to
see how atoms are working.

e. Mathematical Physics

Mathematical physics is a part of a mathematical study that highlights tools, methods,

and techniques of particular use to physicists and engineers. Mathematical physics also
portrays itself as the epitome of science. It concentrates on vector spaces, matrix algebra,
differential equations (especially for boundary value problems), integral equations, integral
transforms, infinite series, and complex variables. Fun fact, perhaps the first Mathematical
Physicist was Newton. Another fun fact, mathematical physicists claim to have proven
experimentally how the Universe works.

f. Mechanics

Mechanical physics is a part of physics that deals with the motion of material objects
under the influence of forces. Mechanical physics has two main branches; classical
mechanics and quantum mechanics. Classical mechanics deals with the laws of motion of
physical objects and the forces that cause the motion. While quantum mechanics is the branch
of physics that deals with the behavior of the smallest particles, namely electrons, neutrons,
and protons.

g. Meteorology

The etymology of meteorology is metéōros, Greek for "things in the air."

Meteorology is a branch of the atmospheric sciences which includes atmospheric chemistry
and atmospheric physics. It is the study of the atmosphere's phenomena and behavior. The
phenomena that are bound by the atmosphere are temperature, air pressure, water vapor, as
well as how they all interact and change over time. Moreover, it focuses on weather
processes and forecasting.

h. Cryophysics (cryogenics)

Cryophysics is the physics of phenomena associated with the matter at low temperatures.

i. Electromagnetism

Electromagnetism is a branch of physics that deals with the electromagnetic force that
occurs between the electrically charged particles. The electromagnetic force is one of the four
fundamental forces and exhibits electromagnetic fields such as magnetic fields, electric
fields, and light. It is used in many electrical appliances to generate desired magnetic fields. It
is even used in an electric generator to produce magnetic fields for electromagnetic induction
to occur.

j. Molecular Physics
Molecular physics is a branch of physics that studies the physical properties of
molecules, the chemical bonds between atoms, as well as the molecular dynamics. This
branch is also related to atomic physics and overlaps greatly with theoretical chemistry,
physical chemistry, and chemical physics. Molecular physics provides in-depth knowledge
about molecular scattering and spectroscopy. . One of the necessary aspects of molecular

physics is that the essential atomic orbital theory in the field of atomic physics expands to the
molecular orbital theory.

k. Optics
Optics began with the creation of lenses by the ancient Egyptians and
Mesopotamians. Earlier studies on optics are known as classical optics. Optics is a branch of
physics that studies electromagnetic radiation. For example, its interactions with matter, and
instruments used to gather information due to these interactions. Optics includes the study of
sight and light and infrared radiation. Moreover, optics has enormous applications to
technology and helpful in many ways.

4. Research for the contribution of each famous person in Physics.

a. Galileo Galilei

Galileo Galilei is considered as the father of observational physics and modern

science. He discovered the law of the pendulum by observing the swaying lamps hanging
from the ceiling. He also founded the law of falling bodies that contradicted Aristotle's
hypothesis. It states that objects fall at the same speed, regardless of weight or shape. His
theoretical and experimental work based on the motion of bodies contributed to devising
important concepts of Physics.

b. Isaac Newton

Isaac Newton is considered the father of physics. He created the laws of motion,
which describe how everything that has matter moves. Additionally, he also has a law of
gravitation, which he discovered by observing an apple. Other than the law of motion and
gravitation, he also invented calculus. Calculus is a part of physics, though it is originally part
of mathematics. Newton also made strides in optics, which is the physics of light.

Albert Einstein is known as the Father of Modern Physics. He developed the theories
of special and general relativity. Which, helped to expand Isaac Newton's theories that had
been put over 200 years. General relativity explains the law of gravitation. Special relativity
teaches the phenomenon in the absence of gravity. He also has a formula on the mass-energy
equivalence formula (e=mc^2). Einstein also has a discovery of the photoelectric effect, for
which he won the Nobel Prize for physics in 1921.
