1 Packaging Material - Roll Fed

1.1 Introduction
To ensure that the properties of the material are not changed it is vital to follow the
storage and handling recommendation of materials. A too low temperature means
that a higher sealing temperature is required. This will increase the risk for heat
damage to plastic film. A too low humidity level of the board (2-3 %) makes the paper
brittle and may cause pinholes or breakage in the plastic film in the base crease when
sealing. A too high humidity level increases the risk for soggy bottoms during filling
and distribution.

1.2 Delivery
The packaging material will be delivered in "small" or "jumbo" reels on one way
pallets. Normally the packaging material reel is wrapped in protective shrink film. The
individually wrapped reels are stacked on pallets. A hood of shrink film or a stretch
film is protecting the reel stack on a pallet against moisture and dirt. In this way the
reels are also secured to the pallet. With customer agreements the reels can be
delivered without the protective films.

Pallets can be stacked on top of each other, maximum 4 pallets with a maximum total
height of 5.3 m. A protection sheet is strongly advised to be used between the pallets.
Be careful when lifting the pallets and reels - do not scratch the other reels.

1.3 Storage of Material

Recommendations:
- Use the material on a first in - first out basis.
- The storage premises must be kept clean.
- The material must be stored completely separate from other goods, such as milk
powder, essences, animal food, chemicals, detergents, etc. There is a great risk that
the packaging material is absorbing vapours which could result in taste problems.
- Store the material on pallets only! The space to the nearest wall should be kept min.
30 cm.
- The material must not be exposed to direct moisture, such as condensation dripping
from pipe etc. neither exposed in direct sunlight.
- If the material is stored longer then recommended, see specification, reliable
production check should be initiated, but partly used material shall be relabeled with
its identification label and wrapped with a protected film. The reels shall be stored in
accordance with this recommendation.

1.3.1 Storage Conditions

Recommended storage conditions for packaging material is:

TB, TBA, TC, TCA, TFA, TGA, TPA, TWA, TT, TEA
 Temperature: 10–40°C

 Relative humidity (RH): 40-65%

To ensure that the properties of the material are not changed it is vital to follow the
storage and handling routine of materials. A too low or a too high RH or temperature
can modify functional properties that can lead to unsterility of package.

Variations from recommended temperature during a short period (4 to 5 days) have

no noteworthy effect on the materials, if the material is re-temporised for at least the
same time period as it have been out of above spec.

Variations from recommended humidity during a short period (4 to 5 days) have no

noteworthy effect on the humidity of the materials.

1.3.2 Storage Time

The storage time is counted from the manufacturing date of the material up to the
time when it will be applied in the filling machine. See customer specification for each
specific product regarding valid storage time.

1.3.3 Storage Conditions in Prior to Filling

The packaging material must reach the same temperature as the temperature
prevailing in the filling premises. The packaging material is protected with protective
plastic film; this should be kept on until the reel/blanks will be used.

1.4 Handling
Every packaging material pallet is stored in an
allocated section for Pack Mat products. Use a special
lifting/turning truck to handle the reels. The maximum
allowed number of pallets to be stacked on top of each
other is 4, without surpassing 5.3 metres high (from
floor to top). This will depend on the packing
alternatives (layers/pallet) used. It is important to
have the maximum possible number of reels per
pallet (i.e. 5 layers for TB/TBA 1000 ml).

A space of 15 cm must be respected between columns

of racks and a minimum of 30 cm must be kept between
racks and walls. Never stack a full pallet on top of a
pallet containing smaller reels. A protection sheet is
strongly advised to be used between the pallets. Always
align the pallets carefully to avoid damages when
handling pallets from adjacent columns.

It is important to have the label visible at all times.

Pallets with molding material (25 kg bags) should not be

stacked, since stacking may cause agglomeration of the
pellets in the bags and is a safety risk. Racks can be
used provided the pallets are supported at four sides by
the rack and the lifting equipment and racks can cope
with pallets of 1430 kg gross weight.

In the case of storing at floor level, a space of 15 cm must be respected between

columns of pallets and a minimum of 30 cm must be kept between pallets and walls.

Always align the pallets to avoid damages when handling product from adjacent
columns.

Additional material pallets are stored and handled also on metal racks.

It is important to have the label visible at all times.

Openings & Closures

storage, packing and loading phases, download >>.

4 Wooden Pallets
Regarding off-flavour from wooden pallets and container flooring treated with
fungicide agents, read more >>.

5 Outer Wrapping Materials

Trays, boxes, straws, shrink film etc.
All these materials are sensitive to extreme heat and humidity.
Too high a temperature in a low-humidity environment will dry out paper based
materials causing cracking and splitting. The dust level in these conditions is usually
very high.

When the relative humidity is too high, material will soften and the clean, sharp
creasing can be affected. Condensation can also form, increasing the rate of
absorption into trays and boxes.

In areas subject to extreme weather conditions well below or above our

recommended levels, remedial action should be taken from the outset.

5.1 Corrugated Cardboard

Corrugated cardboard is a versatile packaging material. It is light and resistant but
certain precautions must be taken during transit, storage and handling to prevent
deterioration of these characteristics. Some pieces of advice are given below, which
should be followed in order to ensure maximum utilization of this type of material

Do:
- Transport on a hand pallet truck or on a power pallet truck.
- Protect from dust and dampness.
- Store flat, on pallets.
- Protect corners when using straps.
- Protect an opened package when production ends for the day.

Do not:
- Step on the corrugated cardboard.
- Drag or drop on the floor.
- Store on edges.
- Stack palletized loads.
- Cut plastic straps holding the package together until the cardboard is going to be
used.

5.2 Relative Humidity

The relative humidity in the storage area should be approx. 50 %. If the corrugated
cardboard is stored in a cold environment, transfer it to the packaging room a few
days before it is to be used.

5.3 Packaging Material for Tetra Tray System

The trays must be accurately perforated and pre-creased. Their dimensions must be
those shown on the drawings.

The cut edges of the tray must be free from raggedness and snags.

The pre-creasing must be accurate so that the cardboard fold easily and does not
tear.

During handling in transit, the material should be protected from dampness, impacts,
and dirt. It should be stacked on pallets in a manner ensuring that the total height is
not excessive.
