ACTIVITY: Roll With My

Rhyme
Using the different techniques that you tried out from the previous activity, this time,
you’ll be able to practice direct poetry writing for what you’re about to do next.

You will be writing a 4-verse poem together with your partner, but the first verse will be
either one of the 2 poem starters given below. You have to use one of the poem
starters. Feel free to change the words which are underlined so that you can control
how your poem’s message will be. You have 90 minutes to do this.

Choose which poem starter you will use from the 2 verses here:

Verse 1 (ABCB) Verse 2 (ABAB)

When I awoke one morning, Every day after dismissal,

A mouse sat on my head. I buy a pack of potato chips.
I asked, "What are you doing there?" And as fast as a missile,
It looked at me and said... I eat them up from a stack on my hips.
HINT: HINT:
You can change ‘mouse’ to another animal or Feel free to describe or use different ways of
into an object, and you can change ‘sat’ into a eating chips throughout the poem. You can also
different verb. change potato chips to something else, like fruits,
A poem that starts with “A duck stood on my noodles, or other treats, and then describe
head” will definitely be different from one that another way of eating them. It’s up to you.
says “A pencil danced on my hand”.

Tips on writing your poem - ask yourselves the following questions:
● What is the main message of your poem?
- Our group will be focusing on the old memories of the lady who laid in her
bed. We bring our poem some twist by the conclusion that if it makes his
lover sad, it will be easier for his loved one to forget him and be happy
than to remember him.

● How will you express that message in 4 verses?

- Memory is the thing we forget about, as a wise writer once put it. But, of
course, poetry is linked to the idea of reliving, remembering, reflecting,
memorializing. Hence, we decided to make a poem about the memories
they shared with the man she is pertaining to. We are going to focus on
putting the lady's memory in the entire poem.

● When you finish your poem, read through it again and ask yourselves if any of the
parts can be written in a better way. Most poems need rewriting and revising, so
don’t feel frustrated if your poem doesn’t “feel right” the first time it is written.
- Between writing poetry and writing good poetry, there's a major
difference. There are several different views regarding the art and craft of
good poetry. Some receive a strong educational or literary quality for
poetry. Others admire the fact that writing poetry offers an artistic and
safe means of self-expression. After finishing reading our poem, I just
realized that we need to enhance our skills in doing the introduction and
the ending of the poem.

● What is the best title for your final work?

- I think all poetry is upright in the sense that whatever comes from the
heart, or whatever speaks the truth, is valid. There may not be any prizes
for the poem itself, but the act of writing it can be mood-altering,
soothing, and maybe even life-changing. It was inspired by one of the
greatest works about the Industrial Revolution mainly the Song of the
Shirt. Since we have chosen the nostalgic genre, we link our title to the
main message of our poem which is “when soft voices die”.

“When Soft Voices Die”

When I awoke one morning,

A lady lay on my bed.

I asked, "What are you doing there?"

She looked at me and uttered...

I do remember, I do remember,

The building that I was born in,

The little window where the sun is located

Come and peep in in the morning;

The wink never came too fast,

Nor did too long a day carry,

But now, I always wish for the evening,

Had my breath taken away

Art, when voices that are soft die,

The memory vibrates...

Odours, sick of sweet violets,

Live in the sense that they invigorate.
