Literature
Review

Balkrishna Parab
ACMA, FCS, PhD

Introduction
The literature review chapter of the project examines recent research studies that act
as a basis for the proposed study. A literature review is a survey of scholarly sources
on a specific topic. It provides an overview of current knowledge, allowing you to
identify relevant theories, methods, and gaps in the existing research. Writing a
literature review involves finding relevant publications (such as books and journal
articles), critically analyzing them, and explaining what you found.

Objectives of Literature Review

A literature review has four main objectives:

• It surveys the literature in your chosen area of study.

• It synthesises the information in that literature into a summary.
• It critically analyses the information gathered by identifying gaps in current
knowledge; by showing limitations of theories and points of view; and by
formulating areas for further research and reviewing areas of controversy.
• It presents the literature in an organised way.
A literature review shows your readers that you have an in-depth grasp of your
subject; and that you understand where your own research fits into and adds to an
existing body of agreed knowledge.

The Structure of a Literature Review

A literature review should be structured like any other essay: it should have an
introduction, a middle or main body, and a conclusion.

Introduction

The introduction should:

• Define your topic and provide an appropriate context for reviewing the
literature.
• Establish your reasons, or point of view for reviewing the literature.
• Explain the organisation, that is, the sequence of the review.
• State the scope of the review, that is, what is included and what is not
included.

Main Body

The middle or main body should:

• Organise the literature according to common themes.

• Provide insight into the relation between your chosen topic and the wider
subject area.
• Move from a general, wider view of the literature being reviewed to the
specific focus of your research.

Conclusion

The conclusion should:

• Summarise the important aspects of the existing body of literature.

• Evaluate the current state of the literature reviewed.
• Identify significant flaws or gaps in existing knowledge.
• Outline areas for future study.
• Link your research to existing knowledge.

Research Paper Assignment

As the Ease of Doing Business in India is the first research project being done by
most students, we have recommended each student to review at least three research
papers. A list of the research papers is suggested for every student. Students are
encouraged to review more research papers. Students are also free to disregard the
suggested research papers and review papers of their choice as long as they can justify
the relevance of the research paper in the context of the project.
