WHAT HAS HAPPENED?

The Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee

on Security (CCS) Wednesday cleared a nearly Rs 11,000
crore project of the Defence Research and Development
Organization (DRDO),

To develop six new Airborne Early Warning and Control

(AEW&C) aircraft for the Indian Air Force.

10-09-2021
This is in addition to the nearly $3 billion deal for
procuring 56 C-295MW transport aircraft for the IAF,
which was also cleared by the Committee, to replace
the ageing fleet of Avro 748 transport aircraft
that first flew in 1961.

While the CCS decision on the C-295 was the budgetary clearance for
the actual signing of the contract,

The Committee has cleared the “Acceptance of Necessity” (AoN) for

the DRDO project.

This means that the DRDO will now be able to issue a

“Request for Proposal” (RFP) for further work on the aircraft.

AWACS & AEW&C

Both AWACS and AEW&C are radars fitted on aircraft to get

the coverage of enemy regions.

They act as the ultimate eyes in the sky because they can
detect and track incoming fighters, cruise missiles
and drones faster than ground-based radars.

It also act as an aerial control room for missions while

keeping track of ships out at sea.

The DRDO Airborne Early Warning and Control
System (AEW&CS) is a project of DRDO.

It is also referred to as NETRA.

It has 270° rotation capacity whereas AWACS

(Airborne Warning and Control System)
by Israel has 360° rotation capacity.

SO WHICH ONE WILL BE FITTED?

According to the original plan, the AEW&C systems

were to be put on two larger A-330 wide body jets
that were to be procured from Airbus.

But now India will not buy the six Airbus 330
transport aircraft planned to be acquired
earlier from the European firm

10-09-2021
Aircraft for the AEW&C will be acquired from
the Air India fleet.

Which means they will be A-319s and

A-321 variants.

BUT WHAT ABOUT 270° CAPACITY

The DRDO’s Centre for Airborne Studies lab is executing the

Block-2 project, which will be more advanced than
the existing systems.

The six AEW&C block two planes would be highly capable

than their predecessor NETRA plane and

Provide 360-degree coverage deep inside the enemy

territory during missions.

10-09-2021
Thus the project has been planned in a way
to promote Make in India in defense
and Aatmanirbhar Bharat.

CURRENT POSITION

The IAF has three PHALCON AWACS systems bought by it

from Israel and Russia

Under which the radar is provided by the Israelis whereas the

platform used is the Russian Ilyushin-76 transport aircraft.

The two NETRA aircraft provided by the DRDO have also

performed very well in the recent conflicts where they have
flown extensively to keep an eye on the enemy activity.

CONCLUSION

The IAF needs more such systems to cover the eastern and western
sectors during offensive operations, experts have said.

The approval for the new AEW&C jets comes at a time when
government has sharpened its focus on promoting self-reliance in the
defence manufacturing sector and positioning itself as
an exporter of military hardware.
