SELF-ASSESSMENT QUESTIONS
1) What is an alkane?

 alkane consists of hydrogen and carbon atoms arranged in a tree structure

in which all the carbon–carbon bonds are single.

2) What are the alkyl substituents or isomers of alkanes?

 Methyl
 Ethyl
 Propyl
 Sopropyl
 Butyl
 sec-butyl or s-butyl
 Isobutyl
 tert-butyl or t-butyl
3) What are the systematic names for branched-chain alkanes?

 Isoparaffins
 Prefix
 Parent
 Locant

4) What are the physical and chemical properties of the alkanes?

  Alkanes are relatively unreactive. Alkanes do not react with strong acids, bases,
oxidising agents or reducing agents. Alkanes combust react rapidly with oxygen
releasing energy, which makes alkanes useful as fuels.

5) What is a cycloalkane?

 Cloalkanes are the monocyclic saturated hydrocarbons.

6) What is a cis-trans isomerism in cycloalkanes?

 When two substituents on a ring point to the same face, they are cis. Like the
cases of cis-trans isomerism in alkenes, these isomers have the same atomic
connectivities but differ in their spatial arrangement of atoms.

7) What is axial and equatorial bonds in cycloalkanes?

  Each face of the cyclohexane ring has three axial and three equatorial bonds
the equatorial bonds will form an "equator" around the ring. The axial bonds will
either face towards you or away.

1. Identify the functional groups in the following substances, and convert each drawing
into a molecular formula (gray = C, red = O, blue = N, ivory = H).
