NARRATIVE REPORT
5th SLAC SESSION
At exactly 8:00 in the morning the 5th LAC Session was started. Grade two teachers
prepared the program for that day.
Ma’am Ailyn Q. Vidal, our facilitator started her talked with a quotation “The first and
last day of school are the hardest for a teacher. The first day you are starting all over agaib.
The last day you are letting go of the progress that was made. What cones in the middle is
the building of a classroom community. Create your classroom community first and the
learning will fall naturally into place.”
She ask “What techniques/ strategies we use before we teach reading?”. Teachers give
their ideas and opinions.
She talked about Teaching Letter Sound Correspondence. Students use grapheme,
phoneme correspondence to decode words. Struggling readers benefit from learning to blend and
segment sound so that they can decode and spell words.
The largest division of phoneme is consonant ( C) and (V).English language makes use of
consonant digraph and consonant blends. We can use systematic approach in reading which is
the blending of sounds to read words. Teach one phoneme at a time. Start with phonemes that
occur frequently in simple words. Short vowel should be thought before long vowel and lower
case letter are thought first.
In reading we should teach the sound of the letters not their names. Teach blending and
segmenting in oral as well as written language. Highlight the first phoneme of words. Teach that
some letters can represent more than one sound and different letters can make the same sounds.
Also those sounds can represent by a single letter or a combination of letters. We can add
kinesthetic component by having student trace or write the letter as they say phoneme.
Play with a sound in words. Let the children hear and distinguish sound of language like
rhymes. Learning sounds in words is the key. Reading is recognizing those sounds in print. It
helps learner get ready to read.
Ma’am Ailyn ended her topic with a quotation” it takes a big heart to help shape little
minds.”
