1
WHAT IS BALL MILL?

 Generally used in grinding materials like ores,

 Chemicals, ceramic, raw materials and paints etc.

It is for the ultrafine grinding process.

 A ball mill is a grinder used to grind the reduced particle into more fine particles.

Typical ball(media):-

2
CONSTRUCTION

 Basically a cylinder is used having a outlet for

3
The in\out of feed.

 Having media in it generally made up of porcelain material.

 Fixed on a shaft (horizontally) which is attached to motor.Rpm is analysed by
the rpm meter.

WORKING :-

 Motor supplies power to the

tumbler(cylinder).

 Tumbler rotates and the collision between the feed and the media takes place

Governing principle:-

 It basically relies on the concept of centrifugal force .

4
 Here the rotation is made at such a pace that it does not exceeds centrifugal

force,as if not the media will not come down and it will go into the vain.

Types of ball mill:-

 Ball mill are generally of two types:-

1. autogeneous

2. non autogeneous

5
Where it is used?
› Ball mills are used extensively in the Mechanical alloying process in which

they are not only used for grinding but for cold welding as well, with the

purpose of producing alloys from powders.

uses

6
 The ball mill is a key piece of equipment for grinding crushed materials, and it
is widely used in production lines for powders such as including cement,

silicates, refractory material, fertilizer, glass ceramics, etc. as well as for ore

dressing of both ferrous non-ferrous metals.

7
PARAMETERS TO Be Taken Care Of!!!!!!
 Contamination
1: newly created surface area is get affected by O2 & N2

 Trajectory of milling

2: In reality, there is a high slip-factor between pot and balls (80%), so

observed trajectories in a mill

Various stages in milling:-

8
9
:-graph showing stages

DRAWBACKS:-
 MORE CONSUMPTION OF ENERGY AS OF MECHANICAL AND ELECTRICAL

10
FACTORS.

 SETTLING COST OF THE EQUIPMENT IS TOO DEMANDING.

 GENERALLY WORKS IN THE BATCH MANNER .
