GUIDE TO AUTOCAD CIVIL 3D

NAVIGATING ROUTE DESIGN

SETTING UP DESIGN On the Drawing Settings dialogue box,
do the following settings
 Activate ToolSpace
1. Set your Drawing Unit to Meters
 Click on Settings
2. Set Angular Unit to Degrees
3. Set imperial to matric conversion
to International foot
4. Set country
5. Set UTM Zone

 Right click on Drawing 1, then click


Edit Drawing Settings

 Click OK afterwards

PREPARING POINT DATA


There are different formats your point data
could be arranged based on user preference.
For design purpose, it’s recommended that
your point data are been arranged in either
of the formats below.
PointNumber --- Easting --- Northing ---
Elevation --- Description (PENZD)
PointNumber --- Northing --- Easting ---
Elevation --- Description (PNEZD)

DISPLAY POINTS DESCRIPTIONS ON POINTS

 Click on Prospector
Note: Edit your data using Microsoft Excel or  Under Point Groups, right click on
Notepad, making sure there are no extra ALL POINTS
characters  Click on Properties

When the data has been arranged in this


format, save appropriately

IMPORT POINTS
1. Click on Points
2. Click the import points icon
3. Click on Add Files (Navigate to the
location of edited point data)
4. Specify point file format (The point file
format selected should be in correlation
with how you edited the point data) 1. On the Point Group Properties dialogue
5. Click OK box, set point style as Basic
6. On Civil 3D workspace, zoom to extent 2. Set Point Label Style as Description Only
All the points will be displayed 3. Ok
 Set the properties as seen in the Create
Alignment dialogue box – as seen below
 Click OK

 The Description of the points will be


displayed accordingly

 After clicking Ok, the Alignment Layout


Tools dialogue box will pop up
 Set the Alignment style to any of the 3
CREATING ALIGNMENTS options. But for the purpose of this
 On the Home Tools box, Click on tutorial, we will use, Tangent – Tangent
Alignment, then click on Alignment (No Curve)
Creation Tools
 Thereafter, connect the centerline
points with polyline (Starting from the
Route chainage 0 + 000 till the last point
 After all the points had been connected,
the alignment will be created (Showing
chainages)

CREATING SURFACE
 Navigate Home --- Surfaces --- Create
Surface

 To change the Chainage interval display,


right click on the Alignment polyline,
then click Edit Alignment Labels
 Set type as TIN surface or any other from
the option that suits your design, then
click OK

 Navigate to Prospectors --- Surfaces ---


your surface ---Definition --- Point file
 Set major stations increment and Minor  Right click on Point file then click ADD
stations increment to preferred value
(For this tutorial, we will use 50.000m
and 25.000m respectively)
 Click OK
 Under Alignment, select your Alignment
 Under Select Surfaces, add your Surface
 Confirm the alignment properties, then
click ADD
 Click Draw in Profile View

 Add the point just as it was done while


adding points to drawing. We use the
same points and procedure to add points
to Surface
 Click OK after the points are been added

 After clicking the Draw in profile


view, the below dialogue box will
popup
 Under Alignment Name, Select
Alignment
 Under Profile View Name, insert a
CREATING ROUTE PROFILE profile name
 Set Profile View Name
 Navigate Home --- Profile --- Create
Surface Profile
 Set the parameters as below
 Click ok

 Click Create Profile View


 Click a space on the civil 3D
workspace to insert the profile

CREATING ASSEMBLY  Click on a space on the civil 3D


 Navigate : Home --- Assembly --- Create workspace to insert the Assembly
Assembly
 Change the side to Right
 Click the right side of the assembly to
create the offset

 Click on the Tool Pallet to activate it

 You will have something like in the


figure below

 Click on BasicLane

 Now we define the shoulders at 1


meter left and right
 On the Tool Pallet, click
BasicShoulder
 Follow the same procedure as done
with BasicLane
 To offset to the sides, you click the
little circle above the BasicLane
Offset
 We are designing a road of 7 meters
width. So, from the centerline, an offset
of 3.5m are been created both left and
right
 Select the Side on which you want to
offset to (in this case, its Left), specify
3.5m as the width
 Click the left side of the Assembly to
create the offset
 The last to do is to define the
BasicSideSlopeCutDitch
 From the Tool Pallet, click on
BasicSideSlopeCutDitch

 You will have something like the below

 Define the sidewalk / walkway at 1


meter to the left and right in the same
manner
 No offset needed, just click both
left and right of the BasicSideWalk

You will have something like the below


CREATE CORRIDORS
Creating corridors will bring alive the
assembly that was initially created
 Input Name
 Set Corridor Style as Basic
 Input Alignment
 Select surface
 Select Assembly
 Select Target Surface
 OK

 After clicking ok, the below box will


popup
 Click ok
 Click on any of the pink lines within
the corridor

 Right click on the pink line to select


alignment
 The corridor will be created as
displayed below

SAMPLING LINES
 After alignment had been selected,
 Navigate : Home --- Sample Lines OK
 On the Sample Line Tools dialogue
box, select By Range of stations
 Input the sampling increment (for
this tutorial, we used 25m)
 Set At Range End to True
 Click ok
 Select alignment and Sample line group
name respectively
 Click Create Section Views
 Insert the cross sections into a space in
the Civil 3D workspace

 Select starting chainage as Baseline and


accept the swat widths
 Select ending chainage as Baseline and
accept the swat widths

CROSS SECTIONING
 Navigate Home --- Section Views ---
Create Multiple Views
