India Automotive

In the global market, the Indian automotive sector has carved a niche for itself. Major European and US automotive
giants, such as BMW and Daimler Chrysler, are recognizing and giving due importance to the Indian vehicles and
components. Increasing disposable incomes of the young professionals coupled with low EMI values are providing
the required impetus and making these vehicles more affordable for the common masses. As the global players are
largely investing on passenger vehicles, the Indian counterparts are trying very hard to be in the business by
investing huge on R&D and working towards overall growth and efficiency.

There has been detailed necessary measure to make India the world's manufacturing hub. Furthermore, the Ministry
of Heavy Vehicles has come forward with its plan for the period of 2006-2016 which is expected to Revamp the
automobile industry and increase its turnover by fourfold. This mission plan would take into its consideration all the
sectors of the society while giving more importance to the lower sections in rural India.

In the recent past, more than a dozen multi-national firms have shown their interest to enter the Indian territories and
collaborated in Indian car manufacturers. To buy car either used cars or new cars; car owners have a number of
options. There are car dealers that have car rentals and sell a car. It helps potential buyers to search cars as per the
car prices.

While most of them have chosen to strike the right notes by forming joint ventures with the Indian firms, there are
some like Hyundai and a few others which have decided to remain fully owned units.
Having an exponential growth potential, the Indian automotive industry is expected to witness more mergers
between the auto component manufacturers and suppliers in the coming years. On the flip side, most of these new
entrants might not enjoy the kind of relationship with suppliers and scale economies that Maruti does, so they have
decided to keep aloof from waging a war with Maruti's $5,500 small car segment.

Rather they have shifted their focus on producing high end vehicles between the price ranges of $20,000 to $50,000.
However, the toughest competition is expected to come from the mid-sized car segment (1300 cc and above), where
many Indian and foreign automobile giants are planning to lock horns. Although the planned capacities of these
companies exceed the projected demands and the cars are ranged competitively at nearly $12,000, the multinationals
are surely betting on the growing disposable incomes of the Indian middle class.

For example, Daewoo's Cielo which is priced at $15000 and has been produced in association with DCM (an Indian
firm), drew 76,000 advance bookings last year which is an indication of the growing demand that is taking its roots
in the Indian automotive industry.

Cars in India

Cars charm one and all, be it a new car or a used one. They are in many colors, many varieties and models of cars on
sale. The craze for cars never seems to end. In fact the car market is swamped with all segments of cars viz. sports
cars, big cars, small cars, rental cars, cheap cars and many others. Even in developing countries like India, the car
market has witnessed tremendous growth in the recent years. As a result the competition among the car
manufacturer is also increasing and they are finding innovative ways of capturing the market. Indian auto industry
has revved up and is making its impact felt. The small car segment in India has attracted the most attention. Maruti
800, one of the first city cars, manufactured by Maruti Udyog Ltd in India, is the largest selling car in India. There
are lots of people trying to make most of it.

Small cars are classified according to the price range which varies from 1 to 3 lakhs. It has the capacity to carry 4

Hatchback Cars

Hatchback cars are those cars that have an access to the interiors once the rear door is open and also the luggage
space is integrated with the passenger cabin and the rear seat can be folded or removed to increase the luggage
space. The two row seater small compact cars are categorized as Hatchback cars. Due to its low pricing, better
mileage, low maintenance and most importantly perfect for drive in city's heavy-traffic, it has become the most
selling car segment.

Hatchbacks occupy fewer parking spaces and are suitable for the metros where parking space is a major problem
and also convenient for women drivers. Series of face lifted hatchback cars in India been launched and many more
are yet to be launched. It seems the car manufacturers are aiming to revamp the entire small car or the hatchback
segment. Comparing to last year, the new models of small cars has almost doubled this year. Even the car
manufacturer of the luxury segment is now entering the hatchback segment.

Market analysis

India Passenger Car Market Analysis

India represents one of the world’s largest and fastest growing automobile markets. De-licensing in 1991 brought
revolutionary changes in the industry and provided well-deserved and timely growth impetus to the industry. This
attracted foreign auto giants to set up their production facilities in the country in a bid to take advantage of various
benefits offered by the industry. Large middle class population, improving income levels and strong technological
capability have been boosting automobile demand in the country for past few years. Even in the wake of economic
slowdown, the industry sustained its positive growth momentum mainly because of strong domestic demand for
passenger cars.

According to our new research report “India Passenger Car Market Analysis”, the passenger car market, which
constitutes around 7 8.5% of passenger vehicle sales (in FY 2010), has immense growth potential as passenger car
stock stood at around 11.6 per 1,000 people in 2009. Realizing booming passenger car demand in the country, many
domestic and foreign automobile giants are formulating capacity expansion strategies, and billions of dollar worth of
investments are already in pipeline. Considering huge market potential, production of passenger cars is projected to
grow at a CAGR of around 11% between 2010-11 and 2013-14.
The recent launch of Tata Nano has brought about a new revolution in the country’s small car segment. Seeing the
good initial response from consumers, many other players in the industry are chalking out their plans to launch cars
in this segment in the next few years. In fact, the compact and mini passenger car segments are fast becoming the
primary source of revenue generation for both domestic and international manufacturers due to the strong
fundamentals of large number of middle class consumers and rising fuel prices.

“India Passenger Car Market Analysis” is an outcome of extensive research and thorough analysis of the Indian
passenger car industry done by our experienced team of industry experts. A comprehensive evaluation of
production, sales, exports and capacity installation trends has been covered in the report. Each section succinctly
explains the current and future market trends and ongoing developments in the Indian passenger car market. In
addition, a brief overview of prominent market players has also been included in the competitive landscape section.
The section includes business description, strategies and recent developments of the key market players, which will
provide our clients a competitive advantage

Automotive trends

We are all well aware of the fact that, for decades the Indian automobile industry was way behind some of the most
influential economies in the world like USA and Japan. The Indian automobile industry, though in its nascent stage,
is expected to set the ball rolling in the Indian Economy as well. Coming to the automotive trends, today, the Indian
automobile industry is one of the most vibrant, modern and upbeat automobile markets in the world. It is also the
second largest two-wheeler market in the global map. With the emergence of the financially sound middle class,
the four-wheeler segment is set for tremendous growth and one can expect of more impetus to the economy from
this sector. No wonder then that this industry has become the centre of attraction for most of the global automotive
giants the world over.

The factors playing a key role in the Indian automobile industry trends are as follows:

 Government: Unlike in the past, the Indian Government has gone through a total role reversal by
becoming the enabler rather than the controller. In the recent past it has started providing better
infrastructure, conducive atmosphere to attract investments and implementing growth oriented economic
policies.
 Competition: With the coming of the multinationals, an immense pressure has grown on the Indian
companies. As a result, a lot of joint ventures have taken place, some others have invested heavily on R&D
to build their own empires and the rest have perished.
 Customer: Armed with higher buying power and an ever increasing expectation from products and
services, the customer is undoubtedly the king and has prOpelled a fierce competition among the major
players in the market.
 Pollution and Safety Norms: cars as well as two-wheelers have met the most stringent international norms
of pollution. Euro II vehicles have become the norm of the day all over India. Unfortunately, in the Indian
context, safety in motor vehicles is a relatively neglected area. Bad roads coupled with the absence of
adequate safety features in the vehicles such as airbag and crumple zone needs immediate attention. But
awareness is on the increase and the use of seat belts while driving has been made mandatory.
 bikes: Keeping apace with the global trends the two-wheeler segment has witnessed tremendous growth
both qualitatively and quantitatively. bikes with higher engine capacities have done commendably well on
the Indian roads. bike styling and fuel efficiency has also seen major developments.

In short, the Indian automotive industry is set for exponential growth in the future.

Automotive Sales Statistics

Almost all the automotive majors in India have registered a significant surge in their sales figures in the year 2007
with the coming of fuel efficient, swanky and ergonomically designed vehicles. To have a clear idea about the
automotive sales industry in India let us consider the figures for a particular month, say January. In January, some
companies declared record sales. Indian automotive major Maruti Udyog Ltd. rolled out a total of 62,248 vehicles,
which translated to a magical 28.3% growth over the same period the preceding year for the company. Meanwhile,
Maruti's biggest contenders such as Hyundai Motors, General Motors India, HondaSiel cars India and Ford India
posted their sales figures at 17,460 units, 3776 units, 6013 units and 4623 units respectively. Furthermore, Hyundai
saw a phenomenal 78% rise in its sale of its flagship brand Santro over last year.
Just like its big brother, the two-wheeler segment also witnessed a huge growth in the recent past. For example, with
three of its immensely popular new models namely, CBZ X-treme, Glamour and CD Deluxe, hero honda sold a total
of 2,97,554 units posting a modest 19.3% increase in its sales figures over the previous year. Likewise, TVS Motor
Company sold a total of 121,147 units that helped better its overall growth by 7% over its previous year postings.

The two factors that are having their impact felt in this segment are the growing buying power of the middle class
and the low-interest EMI schemes. With the changing times, more technologically advanced and fuel efficient
vehicles would crowd the city streets and rule the roost everywhere.

To conclude, the automobile sales are expected to experience a boom in the coming years and we might get to see a
couple more automotive giants invading the Indian territories and locking horns with the Indian titans

Automobile Prices

The automobile industry in the country is booming and there are lots of choices which are available in the market. In
this section we will look at the different segment of cars which are available in the Indian market and the price range
at which they come.

A segment or the entry level segment in the Indian Car industry has been dominated by one car over the decades. The
Maruti 800 from the stable of one of the largest cars makers in the country Maruti Udyog falls under this category of
cars.

These cars have single handedly changed the perception of cars in the country and have provided an easy option for
those who want to graduate from a two-wheeler to a car. Tata Motors' dream of providing a one lakh rupee car
would revolutionize this segment but till then Maruti 800 will continue to rule the roost with another product from
Maruti stable Alto catching up with it.
There has been a shift in the market in which these cars are being sold. Since a large number of towns in India will
not come under the Euro III norms it makes little sense for the peop le in these places to shell out extra money for
cars which have to conform to Euro III norms.

There has been a rise in number of people who belong to the affluent middle class and wish to graduate to cars
which provide the extra glitz and glamour than an entry level car. These cars come with fancy things like power
steering, power windows, pepped up engine and conform to the latest emission norms.

This particular segment doesn't have a clear winner unlike the entry level segment as all the major car companies in
the country have their representation in this segment. There is the Maruti Zen and Wagon R from the countries
largest car maker. The Korean car maker Hyundai entered the market with its flagship car Santro and it has been
able make a great impact in this segment. Tata Motors which promised a desi car for the people of this country has
had a run away winner in Tata indica.

Car Manufacturers

Car manufacturing has come a long way in India since its beginning in late 1940s. From a modest beginning that
comprised of a couple of car manufacturers based totally on foreign technology, today the country boasts of quite a
handful of players, mostly native companies that are in the business of car manufacturing. The two auto
manufacturers Hindustan Motors and Premier Automobiles that started off in the 1940s have enhanced their
production, technological and manufacturing prowess that enables them to offer better and efficient cars to the
consumers of this age. Mahindra & Mahindra, Tata Motors and a host of foreign car makers like Ford, Toyota,
Suzuki, Honda, Hyundai and Skoda are gradually enhancing their scale of operations and presence in the country
sensing the growing business opportunity for the car makers in India.

Hindustan Motors

Hindustan Motors (HM), one of the earliest car manufacturers in India is a CK Birla group company that has a
couple of automobile plants at Uttarpara (West Bengal) and Tiruvallur (Tamil Nadu). The company has different
levels of collaborations and tie-ups with companies like Mitsubishi and Oka Motors from Japan. The company has
cars like various makes of Ambassador and Lancer, Montero, Pajero and one Rural Transport Vehicle (RTV).
Premier Automobiles (PAL) has limited variants of Premier cars while Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) has variants
of Bolero and Scorpio. The company has recently launched Logan car in collaboration with the French car maker,
Renault. Tata Motors is another leading car manufacturer in India that has made a significant contribution to the car
manufacturing scene in the country. With cars of various makes and features, Tata Motors has come up with Tata
Sierra, Tata Estate, Tata Sumo, Tata Sierra, Tata Indica, Indigo over the last few years.

Maruti

However, it is Maruti that has revolutionized the landscape of car manufacturing in India. The company that started
off with its lone plant at Gurgaon (Haryana) in the early 1980s for the manufacturing of a "small family car" Maruti
800 in technical collaboration with Suzuki of Japan, has come up with models like Maruti Omni, Alto, Esteem,
Baleno, Swift and scores of their respective variants. In addition to this, the Indian car manufacturers on account of
their high productivity and low production costs have enhanced their technical expertise and gradually made their
presence noticed in the global markets. Indian car manufacturers have scaled up their production of cars and a
substantial number of them are being exported to countries worldwide.

Car manufacturing has entered into another dramatic phase in India in recent times. The global auto majors like
Ford, Toyota, Suzuki and Hyundai have set up manufacturing plants in India and are using India as an important
production base to source their market requirements both for India as well as the global market. The growth of
autoparts manufacturers in India has also been pehenomenal on the sidelines of automobile manufacturering.

Mid Sized Cars in India

One of the factors that have characterized the impressive growth of Indian automobile market has been the dramatic
and positive changes that have earmarked the Indian car landscape. From old Ambys to a range, color and design of
Marutis, Opels, Tatas, Hyundais and Toyotas, the Indian car market is surely something to watch on. And here too,
the growth of the mid sized cars and the plethora of opportunities in this segment reveal a big, bright future ahead
for the Indian mid sized cars . No wonder, the
manufacturers of mid sized cars are seizing upon the opportunity and coming up with one new mid sized car model
after another.

Generally speaking, a mid sized car has six cylinder powerful engines. The specifications vary from one region to
another with Europe insisting on a length of 4700 mm while in the US and Canada,it is more than 4800 mm long. In
Europe mid sized cars are called " Large Family Cars " while the Australians term them as "Mid Sized Cars."
Talking of the Indian mid sized car scene, some of the popular names include Ford Monedo, Tata Indigo, Hyundai
Accent, Maruti Esteem, Opel Astra, Ford Ikon and the like.
The mid sized cars are one of the popular segments in the Indian car sector today. While the entry of Maruti Esteem
led to the restructuring of the mid sized car segment followed by the entry of Hyundai's Accent, Opel's Astra and
Ford's Ikon, an important development deserves to be illustrated. The customer got a new choice; a mid sized car
provided a fine balance between the small car and a big car while taking care of the budget of the customer too.

In view of the usual requirements of a typical Indian household that needs more people to be accommodated in the
car, a mid sized car gained immediate popularity. The increasing sale of the car models of this segment such as the
Esteem, Indigo, Accent, Ikon and Astra is indicative of the development. The quality, fuel efficiency and interiors of
the mid sized cars too have undergone significant changes that act as a positive pointer to the future of Indian car
market. For more information on Mid Sized Cars please click on the following links:

Small Cars

Small cars in India are the most common mode of personal vehicles. The use of small cars as a reliable mode of
private transportation system is well suitable to the economic state and transport conditions in India. In various cities
of the country the use of small cars has been popular due to narrow roads, excellent fuel economy of these cars, and
price of these small cars.

The Indian automobile market is largely contributed by the small cars. There are some prominent small car
manufacturing companies both from India and abroad, who have established their production, sales, and service
centers in the country.

Maruti, Suzuki, Hyundai, TATA, and GM are some of the small car manufacturers in India. TATA, one of the major
international automobile companies has brought the recent sensation to launch the most inexpensive car of the
world. Priced at Rs 1 Lacs, the TATA Nano is expected to hit the Indian automobile market early in the year 2009.
This will remarkably change the popularity of small cars among Indian automobile lovers.

Luxury Cars

Luxury cars occupy a small portion of the Indian car industry. As per the recent surveys and analysis made by
several organizations, the estimated number of new luxury cars sold annually in India is about 2500. Although it
may look quite minuscule in terms of the total 1.7 million cars sold in India, but the luxury car industry has been
growing at a rate of about 15% annually. The luxury cars started rolling on the Indian roads during 1996 when
Mercedes Benz introduced their new car models in the country.

the air. In India the luxury cars come with price starting from INR 2,000,000. Mercedes Benz C 200 is the entry
level car in this segment, which is available in India with a price tag of about INR 2,420,000.

Car finance companies have made it rather easy to own a car through easy financing schemes. Car insurance also
could be obtained in easy terms that can facilitate the puchase of car withou any hassle. Besides, one can buy used
luxury cars too from the market. They are also available in easy installments with smart car financing.

about 53,000 households were supposed to earn more than INR 10 million by the year 2005. The number of
households having this income has increased considerably in recent times. The various luxury car companies are
eying to tap these households who are their potential customers in the country.
