What is Electricity?

Electricity is the set of physical phenomena associated with the

presence and motion of matter that has a property of electric charge.
Electricity is related to magnetism, both being part of the
phenomenon of electromagnetism, as described by Maxwell’s equations.
There are various common phenomena that are related to electricity
such as lightning, static electricity, electric heating, electric
discharges and many others.

Benjamin franklin has one of the greatest

scientific minds of his time. He was interested in
many areas of science, made many discoveries, and
invented many things, including bifocal glasses. In
the the mids-1700s he became interested in
electricity.

Up until that time, scientists had mainly known

about and experimented with static electricity.
Benjamin Franklin took things a big step ahead. He
Benjamin Franklin came up with the idea that electricity had positive
(1706 - 1790) and negatives elements and that electricity flowed
between these elements. He also believed that
lightning was a form of this flowing electricity.
In 1752, Franklin conducted his famous kite
experiment. In order to show that lightning was
electricity, he flew a kite during a thunderstorm.
He tied a metal key to the kite string to conduct
the electricity.

Just as he thought, electricity from the storm

clouds transferred to the kite and electricity
flowed down the string and give him a shock. He’s
Thomas alva Edison lucky that he didn’t get hurt, but he didn’t mind
(1847 - 1931) the shock since it proved his idea.
Building upon Franklin's work, many other
scientists studied electricity and began to
understand more about how it works.

For example, in 1879, Thomas Edison patented the

electric light bulb and our world has been brighter
ever since!

At the turn of the 17th century, English scientist

William Gilbert established the science underlying
William gilbert the study of electricity and magnetism. Inspired by
(1544 - 1603) Gilbert's work, another Englishman, Sir Thomas
Browne, made further investigations and wrote
books about his findings. Gilbert and Browne are
credited with being the first scientists to use the
term “electricity."

Scientists have found evidence that ancient peoples

may have experimented with electricity, too. In
1936, a clay pot was discovered that suggests that
the first batteries may have been invented over
2,000 years ago. The clay pot contained copper
Sir Thomas Browne plates, tin alloy, and an iron rod.
(1605 - 1682)
RENEWABLE ENERGY
Renewable energy is useful energy that is
collected from renewable resources, which are
naturally replenished on a human timescale,
including carbon neutral sources like
sunlight, wind, rain, tides, waves and
geothermal heat.
The term encompasses biomass as well, whose
carbon neutral status is under debate. This
type of energy source stands in contrast to
fossil fuels, which are being used far more
quickly than they are being replenished.

SOURCES OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
IN THE PHILIPPINES

The Philippines as a tropical

archipelago has the potential to
generate a lot of energy from natural
resources. In recent years, solars in
the Philippines have come to the
forefront in cost efficiency with
regular consumers. In truth, the
Philippines has been generating energy
from renewable resources for a long
time now. It has only been in recent
history that more and more of the
Filipino people are recognizing the
benefits of renewable energies as an
alternative oil and carbon.

Magat hydroelectric power plant
Constructed in the 1980s under the magat river multi-purpose
project, the magat hydro electric power plant is one of the top
hydro electric plants in the country.
Water from the magat reservoir is released through the four
penstocks going to mhepp at 120 cms each. Through large
turbines, this is used to generate electricity of up to 360mw.
Water is the released and held at the Maris dam for irrigation.

Bakun ac hydro
Bakun ac hydro has been producing 70mw of clean and renewable
energy for northern Luzon since 2001. It taps the power of the
bakun and kayapa river in bakun, benguet. Build under build-
operate-transfer scheme, the hydroelectric plant will be handed
over to the national power corporation in working condition,
free of charge after 25 years.

GEOTHERMAL POWER
GEOTHERMAL ENERGY COMES FROM THE HEAT BENEATH THE EARTH’S SURFACE. THERE ARE TWO
METHODS OF EXTRACTING GEOTHERMAL ENERGY USED IN THE PHILIPPINES: THE FLASH STEAM
AND THE BINARY CYCLY. GEOTHERMAL ENERGY EXTRACTED THROUGH FLASH STEAMING EXTRACTS
WATER WITH A TEMPERATURE GREATER THAN 182 DEGREE CELSIUS USING STEAM PIPES. THE
BINARY PROCESS EXTRACTS WATER AT A LOWER TEMPERATURE THAN FLASH STEAMING AND USED
TO BOIL A WORKING LIQUID WITH A LOWER BOILING POINT THAT WILL POWER THE TURBINE.
THE WATER THEN WILL BE RELEASED BACK INTO THE GROUND.

GEOTHERMAL PLANTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

ARE LOCATED IN:

MAKBAN GEOTHERMAL POWER PLANT

IS GEOGRAPHICALLY LOCATED IN A REGION THAT RECEIVES A HIGH
AMOUNT OF SUNLIGHT EACH YEAR.

EVERY YEAR.

CITICORE TOLEDO 60MWP PV POWER PLANT

THE CITICORE TOLEDO 60MWP PV POWER PLANT’S 193,440 MODULES

PRODUCE ABOUT 83,846 MWH OF ELECTRICITY PER YEAR, SUPPLYING OVER
50,000 PHILIPPINE HOMES AND OFFSETTING 46,923 TONS CARBON
DIOXIDE EMISSIONS ANNUALLY.
WIND ENERGY
LIke water, moving air also generates energy through wind
turbines that supply kinetic energy through mechanical
power. The turbines then power a generator to produce
energy.

WIND POWER PLANTS IN THE PHILIPPINES

ARE LOCATED IN:

BURGOS WIND FARM

THE 150MW BURGOS WIND FARM IN ILOCOS NORTE IS THE
BIGGEST WIND FARM IN THE PHILIPPINES AND THE FIRST

YEAR.
BIOMASS ENERGY
BIOMASS ENERGY IS SIMILAR TO FOSSIL FUEL IN THAT IT IS
COMBUSTED IN ORDER TO BOIL WATER TO PRODUCE STEAM THAT
WILL DRIVE A GENERATOR. BEING AN AGRICULTURAL COUNTRY,
THE PHILIPPINES IS RICH IN NATURAL RESOURCES LIKE
BAGASSE, RICE HUSKS, AND COCONUT HUSKS ARE USED INSTEAD
OF FOSSIL FUELS.

RECOGNIZE THE MANY BENEFITS OF HAVING
CLEAN ENERGIES POWERING OUR HOMES AND
BUSINESSES.
SOURCES OF NON-RENEWABLE
ENERGY
IN THE PHILIPPINES

NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY IS A SOURCE OF ENERGY THAT WILL

EVENTUALLY RUN OUT. MOST SOURCES OF NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY ARE
FOSSIL FUELS, SUCH AS COAL, GAS, AND OIL.
THESE NATURAL RESOURCES ARE A MAJOR SOURCE OF POWER FOR A VAST
AMOUNT OF INDUSTRIES— HOWEVER, THERE ARE NUMEROUS DOWNSIDES TO
NON-RENEWABLE ENERGY, INCLUDING THEIR NEGATIVE ENVIRONMENTAL
IMPACT AND THE FACT THEY ARE IN LIMITED SUPPLY.

BATAAN NUCLEAR POWER PLANT
