1. State Hooks Law. (Nov/Dec 2020) [CO1,L1]
2. If the Young’s modulus of a material is 200kN/mm2 and its rigidity modulus is 80 [CO1,L2]
kN/mm2. Determine its Bulk modulus.
3. Find the flexural rigidity of a circular beam of span 4m and having a diameter (Nov/Dec 2019) [CO1,L1]
150mm. Take young’s modulus as E = 200 GPa.
4. A simple supported beam of length ‘L’ carries a moment ‘M’ acting clockwise (Nov/Dec 2020) [CO2,L1]
direction at the middle. Draw the shear force diagram for the beam.
5. Define Shear Force and Bending moment with Sign convention factor [CO2,L1]

PART- B Answer ALL Questions (13+13=26 Marks)

6.(a) Three bars made of copper, zinc and aluminium are of equal length and have cross section 500, 750 and [CO1,L5]
1000 square mm respectively. They are rigidly connected at their ends. If this compound member is (13Marks)
subjected to a longitudinal pull of 250 kN, estimate the proportional of the load carried on each rod and
the induced stresses. Take the value of E for copper = 1.3 × 105 N/mm2, for Zinc = 1.0 × 105 N/mm2
and for aluminium = 0.8 × 105 N/mm2. (Nov/Dec
2020)

6.(b) For the plane stress system shown in Fig Q.11 (b), find the major and minor principal stresses and the [CO1,L5]
planes on which they act. Also find the maximum shear stresses and the planes on which they act (13Marks)

7.(b) A timber beam of rectangular section of length 8 m is simply supported . A beam carries an UDL of 12 [CO2,L5]
KN/m over the entire length and a point load 10 KN at 3 m from the left support . If depth is 2 times the
width and stress in timber not exceeded to 8 N/mm^2. Find Suitable dimension of Section. (13Marks)

PART-C Answer the Questions (1x14=14 Marks)

8.(a) A steel rod 20 mm diameter and 4 00 mm long is subjected to tensile force P acting axially . The [CO1,L5]
temperature of the rod is then raised through 90 degree Celsius and total extension is measured as 0.35 (14Marks)

6.(a) A steel rod tapers in diameter from 18 mm at one end to 9 mm at (Nov/Dec 2016) [CO1,L5]
the other over a length of 900 mm. Determine the elongation in (13Marks)
the length of the bar if E = 200 GPa and the load applied on the
rod is 15 kN

6.(b) A compound bar of length 600 mm consists of a strip of [CO1,L5]
aluminium 40 mm wide and 20 mm thick and a strip of steel 60 (13Marks)
mm wide × 15 mm thick rigidly joined at the ends. If elastic
modulus of aluminium and steel are 1 × 105 N/mm2 and 2 × 105
N/mm2 , determine the stresses developed in each material and
the extension of the compound bar when axial tensile force of 60
kN acts
7.(a) A flitched beam consists of two timber joist 100mm wide and (Nov/Dec 2017) [CO2,L5]
240mm deep with a steel plate 180mm deep and 10mm thick
placed symmetrically between the timber joists and well clamped. (13Marks)
Formulate (i) The maximum fibre stress when the maximum fibre
stress in wood is 80 kg/cm2 . (ii) The combined moment of
resistance if the modular ratio is 18

7.(b) Solve and sketch SFD for a cantilever beam of length 2 m carries [CO2,L5]
the point loads of 800N at its free end, 600N at 0.8 m and 300N
at 1.5 m from its free end. (13Marks)

8.(a) A bar of 25 mm diameter is tested in tension. It is observed that [CO1,L5]


when a load of 60 kN is applied, the extension measured over a (14Marks)
guage length of 200 mm is 0.12 mm and contraction in diameter is
0.0045 mm. Examine the Poisson’s ratio and elastic constants E,
G, K.

(a) A rectangular beam 300 mm deep is simply supported over the (7+7=14
span of 4 m. Determine the uniformly distributed load per metre Marks)
which the beam may carry, if the bending stress should not exceed
120N/mm2 . Take I=8×104 mm 4
(b) A simply supported beam of span 6m is subjected to a UDL of
15kN/m over its entire length. The cross section of beam is 20 cm
wide and 30cm deep. Sketch the variation of bending stress and
shear stress in the beam cross section
