PRELIMINARY
English is an international language used by almost all countries in the world. The
existence of English itself cannot be separated from our daily lives. And without us
realizing it, an in-depth discussion is needed so that everyone can understand and
use English well. Among the many materials that must be discussed to learn
English, News Item is the main material that must be mastered by everyone. This
material As the name implies, news item text can be said as writing that resembles
a news item. This paper tells an event or events in a short, sequential, complete,
and made interesting. The events or events that are written are not things, but must
be worthy or important. However, in this CBR, we will only discuss one material,
namely News Items. The content of news items must have a great value as known
by many people or can affect something big.
If this can be fulfilled, then an article can be said as news item text. Exactly in
writing a news, the content of this text must also be trusted and in the form of facts.
Sources can also be included in writing, for example from eyewitnesses, journals,
and even expert opinions.

A student must be sensitive to the times and information around him. Various ways
can be done to get information, one of them is by reading books. Reading is a very
important activity for a student in the learning process. Not only reading books, a
student must also be able to judge the books he reads are good or not. We can call
this assessment activity a “Critical Book Review”. Critical Book Review can be
done by students simply. Before making an assessment, students must first
understand the content of the book being criticized and be able to compare it with
other books as a comparison to assess the book being criticized.
DESCRIPTION OF BOOK CONTENTS
1.1 Book Summary
News item is a text which informs readers about events of the day. The
events are considered newsworthy or important. News item is a type of the text that
has the main function or communicative purpose to inform readers of listeners or
viewer about events of the day that are considered newsworthy or important. The
generic structure of news item has elements as follows.
- Headline/title: the main point to report in reduced clause.
- Summary of event: the summary of main event that is to be reported.
- Background of event: the explanation about what had happened (who, what,
when, where). Example : Yelena Vazrshavskya is the first journalist to speak to
people who Events witnessed the explosion of a nuclear submarine at the naval
base of Shkotovo – 22 near Vladivostock.
- Source: someone’s about the event. A board of investigators was later to
describe it as the worst accident in the history of the Soviet Navy.
A. Generic Structure of News Item
 Main event recounts the event in summary
 Elaboration (background, participant, time, place) elaborates what happened,
to whom, and in what circumstances
 Resource of information comments by participants in, witnesses to and
authorities expert on the event
B. Language Feature of News Item
 Focusing on circumstances
 Using material process
 Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline
 Use of Material Processes to retell the events (in the text bellow, many of the
Material Processes are nominalised)
 Use of projecting Verbal Processes in sources stage.
 Focus on Circumstances (e.g. mostly within qualifiers).
C. Tips of Reporting
We read a "news item" to find out specific information about an event reported
in the news. Every "news item" has to have the answers to the five WH questions:
• What - What happened exactly?
• Who - Who are the people and groups involved in the event?
• When - When did the event take place?
• Where - Where did the event take place?
• Why - Why did it happen? (The reasons behind the event)
E. Functional Written Text in the Form of News Items
After identifying the information you need, it’s helpful to determine which
part of the text it is in. Headings can help with this, as can reading for gist. The
main reading skill employed is scanning. This involves moving very quickly over
the text, ignoring unknown vocabulary and focusing solely on key words, phrases
and ideas. Scanning should enable you to find the specific information. Then read
that part more carefully to get a full understanding.
Reading for gist can be helpful in:
• locating a specific word or phrase,
• working out unknown vocabulary, and
• finding the general location of an idea.
F. Detailed Written Functional Written Text in the Form of News Items
Explicit information is any idea that is stated. With explicit information, you
see the text explained. Since you are looking for explicit information in what is
read, the explicit information will be written in the text. There is no need to look
for clues. Just read. If the information is written it is explicit.
G. Meaning of Functional Written Text in the form of News Item
The language features of News Item text focus on general topics of human and
non human being. It is characterized by the dominant use of:
• Short, telegraphic information about story captured in headline
• Action verbs
• Saying verbs
Adverbs : time, place and manner.
1.2 Advantages and Disadvantages of Books
A. Book Advantages
in this book, it is quite good and detailed in terms of the material shown, especially
in the news item material. The language in this book is quite understandable and
uses standard language. This book is very complete in explaining the material.
B. Book Disadvantages
in this book, using standard language. so, less understandable for beginners. and
the material is incomplete and plentiful.
