MODERN PHYSICS

TIMELINE
Modern physics is an effort to understand the underlying
processes of the interactions of matter using the tools of science
& engineering.

1895
WILHELM ROENTGEN

He was the first person to

systematically produce and
detect electromagnetic
radiation in a wavelength 1897
range today known as x-rays
or Röntgen rays. J.J. THOMSON
He discovered the electron by
experimenting with a Crookes,
or cathode ray, tube. He
demonstrated that cathode
rays were negatively charged.
In addition, he also studied
1900 positively charged particles in
neon gas.
MAX PLANCK
He discovered the quantum
of action, now known as
Planck's constant, h, in 1900.
This work laid the foundation
for quantum theory, which
won him the Nobel Prize for
1902
Physics in 1918. PHILIPP E.A. von
LENARD
He devised an experimental
realization of the photoelectric
effect. He discovered that the
energy (speed) of the electrons
1905 ejected from a cathode depends
only on the wavelength, and not
ALBERT EINSTEIN the intensity, of the incident light.
Einstein is also known for his
contributions to the development of
the quantum theory. He postulated
(1905) light quanta (photons), upon
which he based his explanation of
the photoelectric effect, and he
developed the quantum theory of
specific heat.
