(i) increase (ii) decrease
(iii) disappear altogether (iv) will remain unchanged
Q3. A matchstick struck on a matchbox catches fire easily

(ii) soles of shoes get worn out after sometime
(iii) pulling a drawer out of a desk
(iv) using a towel to open a tightly closed lid of a bottle
Section B
Q.1 State the factors on which limiting friction depends.
Ans. The factors on which limiting friction depends are:
Nature of the surfaces in contact
The force which presses the two surfaces together
Q.2 What is a spring balance? Give its one use.
Ans. Spring balance is a device used for measuring the force acting on an object. It can be
used to measure weight of an object as well as friction between two surfaces.
Q.3 Arrange the following in increasing order - rolling friction, static friction, sliding
friction and limiting friction.
Ans. Increasing order:
Rolling friction , sliding friction , static friction and limiting friction.

Q.4 Why are boats and aeroplanes streamlined?

Ans. Boats and aeroplanes are streamlined to reduce fluid friction.
Q.5 List the factors affecting friction.
Ans. The factors on which friction depends are:
Nature of the surfaces in contact
The force which presses the two surfaces together ( for horizontal movement it
will be equal to weight of the object)

Q.6 Define kinetic friction.

Ans. Kinetic friction also known as dynamic friction, is the force of friction
between two surfaces in contact with each other when there is a relative motion
between them.
Section C
Q.7 Why it is easier to hold a kulhar (earthen mug) than a glass tumbler.
Ans. It is easier to hold a kulhar (earthen mug) than a glass tumbler as the surface of kulhar is rougher. Hence
friction is more.
Q.8 Why friction is a necessary evil?
Ans. Friction is a necessary evil as it has both advantages and disadvantages .
The Advantages of friction are:
1. Friction helps us to walk on the ground
2. We can write on a paper or on a board due to friction
3. Friction helps in stopping a vehicle on applying the brakes.
4. It helps in generating heat when we rub our hands together
5. Meteors burn in the atmosphere before reaching the earth due to friction and thus friction saves lives.
The disadvantages of friction are:
1. Friction leads to wear and tear of objects.
2. Friction slows down moving objects .
3. Friction leads to wastage of energy in the form of heat .
4.Due to friction engines consume more fuel or in other words it reduces the efficiency of engines.
Q.9 What is a lubricant? Why is it important? Give any two
examples of lubricants.
Ans. Substances, which help to reduce friction when put on a
surface, are called lubricants. Lubricants can be liquid, semi
liquid or solids. Lubricants are important for the smooth
functioning of moving parts like in a machine. Two lubricants
are oil and grease .
Q.10 What is streamlining? How was the concept of streamlining
objects taken from nature?
Ans. Streamlining means designing the object such that it
experiences very little fluid friction(thicker in the middle and
narrower at the edges). Birds and fishes have a streamlined
bodies and the concept is borrowed from them.
Q.11 Differentiate between static, limiting and kinetic friction.
S.No. Static friction Limiting friction Kinetic friction

limiting friction. friction.
Q.12 How friction can be increased?
Ans. Ways of increasing friction are :
a. By providing grooves- For example, the soles of shoes have
grooves to increase friction and prevent slipping.
b. Treads are made in the tyres of vehicles to increase friction and
it prevents skidding of vehicles on wet road.
c. Disc brakes in a car, the harder the brakes are pushed, the harder
the pads get pressed into the discs and more friction is
generated. These brakes can stop the vehicle very quickly.
d. Increasing the normal force / weight .For example if a small,
light object is sliding on a slanting table , then we keep a heavy
object like a book over it to stop it.
Q.13 What are Ball bearings? Explain use of ball bearings to reduce friction. Name
two objects where ball bearing are used.
Ans. Ball bearings are devices used in machines to reduce friction. They reduce
friction by converting sliding friction to rolling friction. Ball bearings are used
in roller skates and electric fans.
Q.14 With an activity show that friction
(i) does not depend on area of contact
Ans. Step 1 : Take a brick and tie a rope around it. Now keep it on a flat surface.
Attach the hook of a spring balance to the rope and pull it with a slowly
increasing force. Note the reading on the spring balance when the object just
begins to move. This is the value of limiting friction between the brick and the
surface on which it is kept.
Step 2 : Keep the brick along its edge and repeat the step1.You will observe that
though the area of contact is now different the value of limiting friction remains
the same. This activity shows that friction does not depend on area of contact.
(ii) depends on weight of the object.
Ans. Step 1 : Take a brick and tie a rope around it. Now keep it on a
flat surface. Attach the hook of a spring balance to the rope and
pull it with a slowly increasing force. Note the reading on the
spring balance when the object just begins to move. This is the
value of limiting friction between the brick and the surface on
which it is kept.
Step 2 : Keep another brick over the previous brick and repeat the
first step. You will observe that the value of limiting friction
increases with the increase in weight.
Thus this activity shows that friction depends on the weight of the
object.
Q.15 Explain why :
i. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction.
Ans. Rolling friction is less than sliding friction as the
irregularities do not interlock properly while rolling.
ii. Gymnasts rub coarse powder on their hands before the event
Ans. Gymnasts rub coarse powder on their hands before the
event to improve the grip by increasing the friction. As
friction is more when the surface is rougher
