1.0 INTRODUCTION

Our personalities describe how unique we are because of our own individual patterns, feelings
and behavior there’s a lot of assessments psychologists do to know if you’re introvert or
extrovert, one of the assessment is “MYERS-BRIGGS “ personality type indicator is a self-report
inventory designed to identify a persons personality type, strengths, and preference. Developed
by Isabel myers and her mother katherine Briggs. According to Carl Jung's theory, there are two
exclusive attitudes- introvert and extrovert, He is the first person to describe these two
personality extremes back in the 1960s. He wrote that introverts and extroverts could be
separated based on how they regain energy. “Each person seems to be energized more by
either the external world (extraversion) or the internal world (introversion).”

Based on a recent research conducted today 16 - 50 percent of the population consists of

introverts, who get their energy from having “alone time.”
The introverts are more likely in the inner world, they are characterized by having a traits of
being quite alone but not lonely. Introverts do things by themselves and don't like social
interaction, being observant identify changes in their environment very quick. They listen
before they speak, figuring out and take some mental notes before they insert themselves into
any social situation. This preparation allows them to enter a conversation confidently, without
stumbling over their words or doubting the accuracy of what they say.

In academic performance they say Introverts are good at studying and they believe that
knowledge is our power , more wanted to learn and study by themselves . Doing things by their
own understanding and more concern or intensely interested in things that they care about .
Without the help by other people they can be experts in their own fields. They are independent
and have a strong affirmation on what they are believing. Also a good listener but only talk or
say their opinion when they are confident and has a plenty of arguments. Being bashful and shy
it will have a negative effect on how they can communicate when there is a group work or
group project that was given by their teacher, prefer to conduct a individual research and good
at written works.

Introvert are Independent persons they can do things by themselves and take care for their
material needs. Having freedom is their happiness and are trust worthy they can keep secrets
because they know how hard it can be to trust somebody, so they won’t share a personal detail
if you don’t want them to. But group works can help introvert students to develop their vocal
and performance

Researchers estimate extroverts make up 50 - 74 percent of the population. These “social

butterflies” thrive under social stimulation. Extroverts focus on their external environment, the
people and activities around them. Based on the  big 5 theory of personality, extroversion
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY

ANTIPOLO CITY
(often known as extraversion) is one of the five core traits believed to make up human
personality. Extroverts is characterized by sociability, talkativeness, assertiveness, and
excitability. Extroverts are characterized by having an outgoing personalities they tend to gain
energy in social situations. Being around other people helps them feel energized and excited.
Furthermore this personality of introverts and extroverts vastly differ, they definitely affect how
people learn.

In an academic performance Extroverts are often thrive in learning environments that allow
them to interact with others. When the teacher tend to grade the class participation, extrovert
will achieve good performance because this is something that they are comfortable with. There
is no problem in raising their hands when recitation or asking some questions and offering to
lead a group study that can provide plenty ideas, delivering a good speech and presentation
with full of confidence.

When working in a group project you will need to work or interact with the people who doesn’t
have the same personality like you. Introvert will not be comfortable because they prefer less
stimulation and discuss things alone to focus and develop their thoughts. But Extroverts needed
a higher levels of external stimulation and dopamine to function and thrive in group settings.

Each individual student since the age of normal infant has the potential and talent that can be
expanded and enhanced. They have been exposed earlier to various sources of information.
This phenomenon to some extent can have a significant impact in the development and
physical growth, cognitive, psychomotor and emotional, especially among those who are
known as students. Gifted and talented students as individuals who have a high potential in
various aspects of development and growth. In order to develop their potential and talents in a
more systematic and effective, a special education program is needed.Students' personality
type to be emphasized since it is among the aspects that influence academic achievement.
Personality can know as a dynamic organization and planned properties owned by a person
with unique determine behaviour, motivation, thinking and various situations (Influence of
Personality on Academic Achievement and Performance of Teaching Practices Students in
TVET,2015)

According to Ghani, Nik Yaacob and Che Ahmad (2008), the study of personality is important is
because many people in our society who think that intelligent students are much better
behaviour than other students. But the actual reality is not as assumed. This is because all the
students in the class have the same good. The belief that gifted students are better encourage
the implementation of unfair practices or negative practices for other students. In fact,
according to Yahaya (2010), the problem of self-development, social or crimes among students
starting from the problem formulation and adaptive personality of a student.
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
ANTIPOLO CITY
Background of the study
Since the beginning 0f 1990s, there has been a growing interest on how personality
correlates to the academic performance. Scholar like Rod Ellis in The Handbook of
Applied Linguistics edited by Davies (p.81) describes a finding that from 6 out to 8 studies
that employ oral language test extroverts performed better than introverts. While Murray
and Mount stated that “an individual’s personality can have an effect on to what extent he
is able to achieve information (p.270). There are some experts who try to define the word
of personality such as Robert B. Ewen (p.4) said that, “Personality refers to the important
and relatively stable characteristics within a person that account for consistent patterns of
behavior”. While Cloninger (p.3) defined, “Personality as the underlying causes within the
person of individual behavior and experience”. From both statements, it can be conclude
that personality is the characteristics which are possessed by an individual; these are the
characteristics that distinguish us from other people,

We all know that the introverts is usually want to be alone they want to stay away from others
they don’t want to socialize just like what diane 2010 a blogger says “ ,Introverts get their
energy internally through quiet time, contemplation, and emotion.” but for extrovert who
always want to expose want to always have a chitchat to the friends they want a external
activities. so as Ghangi , at al, an extroverts have characteristics such as cheerfulness, witticism,
sociability and good humour .

Introversion and extroversion are dissimilar with each other but some ideal learnings that they
can learn from each other . Extrovert like having fun around discovering and exploring new
things, when introverts paying attention on how extrovert are open-minded they can learn to
step outside of their comfort zone tend uncover new skills and talents they didn’t know they
had. Observing how extroverts are good in communication introverts will learn to socialize and
have confidence in a group settings. In listening introverts tend to be strong listeners and
observant and this is something that extroverts can learn pausing before they speak as
allowing others to speak and think before expressing their own thoughts.

According to Jung, extroverts are more influenced by their surroundings than by their
inner world. And the introverts are tuned in to their inner world with all its biases,
fantasies, dreams, and individualized perceptions. Based on the definition above, it can be
concluded that the personality of a person there are two kinds. There are the extrovert and
introvert. First, the extrovert are more open and easy to express opinions, and the second
one is the introvert are more closed and tend to be quiet. Both of these personalities
certainly have different levels of participation in learning speaking. Extroverts will be more
dominant and have more learning
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
ANTIPOLO CITY
accuracy than introverts who more tend to be quiet and will silent if they did not sure about
what they want to say. Of course this problem should not happen. Students should have
equal opportunities in learning whether extrovert or introvert. But as we all know, lot of
teachers treat the students in one class with same method. This situation will not become a
big problem for the extrovert because they will easily adapt in any situation, but it will be a
big problem for the introverts. The writer hopes that the findings of this research may help
the speaking class lecturer to understand the personality, method (learning style and
learning strategy) that the students develop for gaining success in the speaking class. Also
to help the students of Speaking Class to understand themselves and their needs in order
to make the learning process runs well. (Volume 8, No.1, February 2017 Agus Rofi’i )

Now it would seem that the classroom activities are tailored to fit extroverts. Teachers really
want when a student confidently speaks in class. So that we can say the introvert is at fault for
struggling with class recitation because many teachers didn’t understand that not all children
are the same, and that learning can take different routes. They cannot see the brilliance in
introverts because the latter do not express themselves in the same way as extroverts. like
what Gail saod to an article for being an introvert is not that easy. “In academic performance
the Life doesn’t get easier for introverts in school. With oral reports, speeches and group
projects, they find themselves in a state of anxiety and discomfort, forced to venture way
beyond their comfort zones. But extroverts breeze through these assignments, even taking the
time to high-five everyone. “Gail aranas 2017

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM
This study is to determine the Two different hypotheses on the relation between extroversion-
introversion and second language learning. They each focus on different contributions of
extroversion and introversion. In addition, there are some studies. We aimed to define the role
and influence of extroversion/introversion continuum or social style on second language
acquisition. These studies all tried to find out if learners’ personality variables had any effect on
their language learning process As one might guess, the personalities of introverts and
extroverts vastly differ, which can definitely affect how people learn. One aspect of introversion
and extroversion that is not often addressed is how these two types can best learn and retain
information. In this lesson, we will explore ideal learning settings for each type and discuss what
each type needs to achieve his or her educational potential. There are many opinions stating
that a student's academic achievement is related to student mental alertness factors, this is
because due to the role of other factors such as personality factors, environmental factors,
psychological and sociological factors cannot be ignored. Several studies conducted by
psychologists have shown that personality factors play a role in influencing the student's
academic performance

 Differences between the introvert and extrovert students in listening achievement. °

 The strength and weakness of becoming introvert and extrovert in their excellent
learning performance.
 Analization of ideal learning settings of introversion and extroversion that can learn
from each other.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY
This study aims to give insight and awareness about the effects of this two personality traits
among students and teachers.

 To give awareness about being introvert and extrovert and its effects in their academic
performance.
 To identify the ideal learning settings of these two personality traits.
 To evaluate the differences between the introvert and extrovert students in listening
achieve.

Scope
We the researchers only want to focus on the behavior of the students such as estraversion and
introversion as personality traits that can affect the way they perform inside the classroom and
how it can affect their academic attainment.

Delimitation
This study aims to determine the knowledge and ability of selected Senior High School students

2.0 Review of Related Literature

Foreign Literature
The academic performance is influenced by various factors. Among the factors is the factor of self,
friends, family and student environment. Where these factors is contained in the student's personality
(Bonyamin, 2015). When we reflect on one's personality with someone else then in will be there the
difference. According to Engler (2017), this difference arises as a result of environmental factors and
genetic factors. In addition, there is a contradiction between the notion of personality theorists. Some
argue that personality is formed as a result of genetic factors and some others feel due to
environmental factors (Robbins, 2015).

Introversion and Extroversion also affects decision making because it is a choice that had to be
made while thinking about several possibilities. Human decision making and judgement is
readily observable in reality. (International Research In Medical Science,2016)

The way we learn is very much affected by our personality. Practitioners have claimed that
perception of personality type can help teachers to understand the reason why students
perform differently in class activities (Ali Akbar Jafarpour Boroujeni, Ali Roohani, Asiyeh
Hasanimanes,2016).

Introversion/extroversion is generally considered to be one of the most important factors

affecting the success of foreign language learning, especially spoken language. Extroverts are
usually thought to be better at learning a foreign spoken language than introverts. ( Yan Chen,
Yuhong Jiang, Zengzhen Mu,2017)

A study of personality is important because many in our society who think that intelligent students are
much better behaviour than that of a normal student. The reality actually is not as assumed. This is
because all the students in a class have the same good. The belief that gifted students are better
students than others can encourage the implementation of unfair practices or the negative practices of
other students in a classroom. We used to listen to students classified as "good" or "bad" based on
cognitive or academic abilities. A cognitive ability actually owned by a student does not necessarily make
the student become a good person or bad.

Local Literature
Learning achievement is one indicator in determining the success of an educational institution,
student learning achievement consists of three aspects, namely cognitive, affective and
psychomotor aspects. The student has unique and distinctive characteristics in behaving as well
as in the learning process. A good learning process will result in a good learning achievement as
well. Learning achievement is a proof of the success of learning or ability of a person in doing
learning activities in accordance with the weight achieved. Many factors that affect learning
achievement one of them is the student's personality. Personality can affect student
achievement level. (Relationship of extrovert and introvert personality types against student
achievement faculty of nursing USU,2015)

Dealing with various aspects and factors regarding introverts extroverts and learning, Eysenck
(2015) has summarized some of his research results.(3)From the list, the following points seem
more important: 1- Performance of extroverts is enhanced by reward more than introverts, but
punishment impairs the performance of introverts more than extroverts. 2- Introverts are more
susceptible to distraction than extroverts. 3- Introverts take longer than extroverts to retrieve
information from permanent or long term storage, especially non-dominant information. 4- At
short retention intervals, extroverts are better with retention test performance than introverts,
but at long retention intervals the opposite happens (3). On a study conducted using the
Eysenck personality inventory and a questionnaire about the study methods and academic
motivation, were given to 139 university students and 118 students from an educational
college. At the end of the first year, academic performance’s scores analysis showed that
students and introverts with good study methods are superior. Also, introverted students have
better study methods, which is only a partial explanation for their superiority in academic
performance. An item analysis used to identify the successful student’s characteristics showed
a positive relationship between good students and introversion and stability(4). One way in
which parents try to normalize their children is by attempting to turn introverted children into
extroverts. Introversion often carries a negative connotation in people's minds, but this
prejudice is unwarranted and detrimental. Introversion is a basic personality trait in which
individuals gain energy from being alone rather than from being with others. While extroverts
gain energy from being with people the more they relate to others, the more energy they have
for themselves(5).Although neither personality type is better than the other, few mothers hide
their budding socialites to spend more time alone, while happy readers are frequently
admonished to be more social. Unfortunately, doing so has detrimental effects on their self-
concepts(6).Research has shown there are many differences in the ways extroverts and
introverts approach situations(6,7). There is a dominant personality type that reflects how the
individual prefers to work or deal with his own environment, especially in the presence of
stressors. The introvert’s main focus is on his/her own head, in the internal world of ideas and
OUR LADY OF FATIMA UNIVERSITY
SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL DEPARTMENT
ANTIPOLO CITY
concepts; the extravert’s primary focus is on the external world of people and activities (7).
According to various studies, and as stated by Dan Buettner in Thrive via Psychology Today, the
brain of an introvert vs. an extrovert is simply wired differently. The brains release dopamine
hormone while experiencing something positive. It’s an automatic reward center that makes us
feel good. Extroverts need more dopamine to feel an effect, whereas introverts have a low
dopamine threshold. The front part of an introvert’s brain is most active and stimulated by his
or her own thoughts. Introverts individuals prefer doing activities alone and/or with small
groups and this can determine the type of activities such as reading, writing, painting and
problem solving

As by Hyacinth J. Tagupa of daily inquireron May 27, 2017 introverted traits are usually
misinterpreted as less desirable. One of the biggest characteristics of an introvert is drawing
energy from solitude, silence and internal interests instead of people, activities and external
stimuli. This need for quiet is often misconstrued as being shy, asocial, a snob or a loner. Or, as
Pinoys would say, “KJ,” “hindi marunong makisama,” “maarte.”

In truth, introversion does not necessarily mean shyness or a lack of social skills. It is simply a
different disposition. Some of the most successful public personalities in the world—from Bill
Gates to J. K. Rowling to Steven Spielberg—are actually known introverts.

Neither is introversion an aversion toward people. Research has revealed that all sorts of
people, including introverts, feel happier when they socialize; it’s just that introverts have lower
tolerance for external stimulation and thus feel exhausted after too much socializing.

2.! Definition of terms
1.Extraversion-The energy of extraverts is outward, towards people and things. They need a lot
of stimulation and often express emotions. They get their motivation and 'recharge their
batteries' from being with other people. Their batteries are drained when they are alone.

2.Introversion-The energy of introverts is inward toward concepts and ideas. They get their
motivation and recharge their batteries by having time by themselves ('me time'). Their
batteries are drained when they are with other people, even if they are enjoying the company.

3.Personality-traits reflect people's characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviors.

4.Socializing-the action or practice of participating in social activities or mixing socially with

others.

5.Academic performance-is the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved
their short or long-term educational goals.

6.Behavior-the way in which one acts or conducts oneself, especially toward others.

7. Skills-the ability to use one's knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performance.
