EGG DETECTIVES

By Hannah, Maisy, Jame & Cassidy


STATION 1: EGGS
Students explore the different parts of an egg and the egg's
structure such as the yolk,, white, membrane and shell.
Students will discuss how the egg-formed inside the
chicken and watch a short video. Looking inside the eggs
after completing the bouncy egg experiment. Students will
be able to colour and complete their worksheet by labeling
what's inside their eggs.
EXPERIMENT: BOUNCY EGGS
Materials:
Raw Egg Per Group, Glass Jar Per Group, Enough Vinegar to
Cover Egg
Steps:
1. Put your raw egg into your jar
2. Carefully pour vinegar into your jar until the egg is fully
covered
3. Leave the egg in the jar for 3 whole days
4. Take the egg out of the jar and wash it with water
5. Look at the egg and see what you can see

STATION 2: HATCHING
This station of the lesson is based on the sense of
touching and concrete materials to teach students about
the hatching stage of a chickens lifestyle. Students will
be engaged by cracking, feeling and playing with an egg,
while also exploring the eggshell itself and how it
protects the chick. Student’s will also learn how a chick
hatches and the physical level of movement involved in
hatching.
RESOURCES: EXPLORING WITH SENSES
Egg in between 2 students
1 Bowl per student
1 fork per student
STATION 3: CHICKS
Chick food will be displayed in the station, students will be
able to touch and smell the starter feed. Students will have a
worksheet and will have a space to draw a brooder and they
will label how they would make one, Students will be given
play-doh, they will create a ball the size they believe a chick
would be when they initially hatched and when they have fully
developed their feathers (6 weeks of age) and compare sizes.
ACTIVITY: PLAYDOH CHICKS .

Materials:
Yellow/coloured Play-Doh, Colouring in pencils, Pen and iPads
Steps:
1. Grab enough play-doh for yourself and your team members!
2. Now the fun starts, create your own chicks! One must be your guess at the
size of a newly hatched chick and the other a 6 week old chick.
3. Create your chicks and line them side by side.
4. Photograph your ‘chicks’ and compare sizes with your team members!
5. Team helper packs away play doh after all team members have taken
photos.

STATION 4: CHICKEN
Students will design and decorate a chicken to reinforce
its key features. Students will complete a worksheet to
label the key parts of a chicken including the beak,
comb, tail, feathers, wings and feet. The students will
compare these to how they differ from what they have
seen in the egss and chicks at previous stations. The
students will then use different materials to design their
own chicken including these features. . ACTIVITY: DESIGN A CHICKEN
Materials:
Feathers, Pop sticks, Pipe cleaners, Coloured card, Googly eyes, Chicken
outline, Glue , Newspaper, Pens, Scissors
Steps:
1. Features- mix and match/labelling the parts of a chicken
2. Student leader collects their groups materials.
3. Place group member names on the back of the sheet.
4. Plan out how you will design your chicken
5. Students work collaboratively to decorate their chicken.
